Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 9th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/09/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-9th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Made a redemption + car booking via the callcentre with BA.

Came through on my wife’s statement as “Avios Group” rather than BA – so she only got 1.5 points per £1 rather than 3 points per £1 on the BAPP.

Anyone seen this before? She went onto Amex live chat who asked her to submit a receipt to show it’s a BA booking. So hopefully will receive the correct Avios in a few days time.

  • HackinJack says:

Update: Amex have applied a credit to my account, note says I will see it on next statement. Also the cancellation now shows in my HH account – albeit without a reference number.

  • Mark says:

I see my Priority Pass Prestige membership has just been extended by three months (from Nov 2020 to Feb 2021). It shows the new expiry date in the app, but I’ve had no notification otherwise.

still no Tesco clubcard points for pet insurance and been 48 days or so. I assume at this point it is worth calling to chase? Anyone else in the same boat?

    • WIllPS says:

      Yepp, same 🙁

      • Michael says:

Do you have any other Clubcards registered to your address? My pet points went to another family members account thanks to Tesco’s silly details matching system rather than letting you enter your number. Worth checking any other accounts!

        • G says:

Same happened to me. 2 x 2500 turned up in my account when I applied for pet insurance once under my name and once under my wife’s

A few datapoints from our holiday to Japan which should have started next week. We had a 241 booking with BA and 3 hotels: Hilton, Hyatt and Virgin Holidays (with the £2K voucher I won through Virgin Red App and topped up with cash). Our travel insurance wouldn’t cover anything once a pandemic was declared unfortunately.

BA: Cancelled our outbound flight and refund requested with the workaround on 19 March. Avios and 241 redeposited on April 3 and we are rebooked for next March’s cherry blossom hopefully. No sign of the cash yet.
Hilton – was a flash sale booking but made fully refundable. Requested on 18th March, hit my curve card yesterday.
Hyatt – another non refundable booking but was able to cancel now. Card hadn’t been charged yet.
Virgin Holidays – contacted on 18th March and they confirmed yesterday we can have either a full refund or a travel voucher, which they had already included in the email. The voucher however has an expiry of this July, when the original prize was September! To encourage me to accept my money being locked up they are offering 4000 Virgin miles if I take the voucher. Considering I already cashed my Vmiles to Hilton on the 28th (arrived yday) I know which I prefer!

Overall, with their quick response and status extension Hilton have really come out of this highly in my estimation. Since all bookings till June are fully refundable, we may well move all our stays for next year to them. Well played.

    • Alan says:

Agree, Hilton have handled this whole thing really well 👍

  • Paul says:

Well done to Rocketmiles, had a non-refundable booking for Westin San Fransisco in June which I presume I’m not going to make, so emailed to try to cancel, knowing Marriot’s corporate cancellation waiver should help. Received standard auto reply about please wait until 14 days before travel, we’ll do our best, please use web site etc. etc., but within 24 hours had confirmation of cancellation and refund would be processed immediately by Rocketmles, but my bank may take some time to show it… Apart from missing out on 11,000 heathrow reward miles, a great quick result… Now just need BA to cancel one of the flights…. So consequently, it’s a BA holiday booking, flight and car, balance of £2500ish due end of April, £700 already ‘deposited’, would it be worth me talking to insurance (Amex platinum) about if I should pay balance. IF FCO lift travel advice AND BA run a LHR-SEA and a SFO-LHR on appropriate days, so I could infact travel (I admit I’d rather not) I understand I’d lose the lot if I don’t go, but IF FCO don’t relax no travel advice, presumably insurance would be on the hook for the whole amount rather than the £700 if I don’t pay the balance. My guess is they’ll lean towards the pay up and hope you can go so we’re not on the hook, or BA cancel, so they’re on the hook. Any gamblers got advice?

Does anyone know when Iberia/BA announce flight cancellations and when they tell you about it? I have a redemption booking to Spain at the end of the month. I haven’t heard anything but the flight isn’t showing if I search for new tickets. Don’t know whether to cancel now – while the java script workaround still maybe works – and lose £35 or wait and see if they cancel?

    • roberto says:

the end of the month? you mean April? If so it will be cancelled and you will be getting your money and miles back

  • Andrew says:

Is there any way of finding out if I still have a Lloyds upgrade voucher? At one point last year I had two. I’ve used neither but I’m not sure if one or both of them have expired.

    • Gritts says:

Contact Avios via Live Chat. They’ll confirm. No long waits at the moment.

      • Andrew says:

Thanks. Turns out I still have one expiring at the end of May
