Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 1st April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/04/01/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-1st-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

I have used the ITA matrix to find the taxes snd surcharges of flights. When it comes to reward flights, are you charged YQ and YR if the airline passes on the charges? What is the difference between the two?

    Thanks

Heathrow express. Has anyone managed to get their carnet extended?

    • Rob says:

I know they have been refunding non-refundable tickets on request as a goodwill gesture so I’m sure carnet extension won’t be an issue.

  • Ben says:

I wonder whether BA will take the opportunity of all their planes being on the ground to speed up the upgrade of Club Suite, or whether they won’t want to spend the money?

    • Rhys says:

Not that easy, the bottleneck is with the seat production. Only a handful can be manufactured each day – and potentially less now with supply chain issues.

  • Anna says:

BA are telling people contacting them via Facebook that they can’t process cash refunds online. Failing to mention that this is because they have deliberately tinkered with their IT to prevent this!

    • Doug M says:

I have two pending refunds, both Avios based, and on cancelled flights. Now into 3rd week of waiting on the actual refund and points return. So even if you’re successful on the cancellation, it doesn’t mean you’re getting the money, or the Avios back.

      • J says:

I had a RFS cancellation on 10th March. Taxes/Fees refund came in today, Avios not hit account yet.

      • GeorgeJ says:

I thought the same for one booking until I called and found they were in a suspense account awaiting clarification of where to send them, all sorted quickly.
Other requests for refunds actioned in a few days, quite impressed by both BA and Avios.

      • Liz says:

Me too – I cancelled on the 13/3

  • Pangolin says:

Yes. “Chabuddy geezy” posted this news above.

Good move on their part but the crucial issue is what they decide to do with miles expiry.

  • Matthew says:

With ref BA 2 for 1 companion voucher. I spent £10.5k on BAPP, voucher banked in BA Exec account but not used yet. Then downgraded to blue and put the card in the drawer til next year. However, if I get a flight refunded it would take me below the original £10k spend requirement for BAPP. Will the voucher be removed – and if it is I guess I’d have to hit £20k spend on the blue before it comes back??! Thanks

    HURRAY!

After just the 2 hours 40 on hold I finally managed to get through to EasyJet to request a refund for my cancelled EDI-TXL flights next Monday. Agent claimed 3-5 days for the full amount to reappear on Amex. Cynical I know but I’ll believe it when I see it. Thankfully I had a refundable rate at the Regent so that was no bother to cancel with IHG.

  • Smiles says:

    Amex q:
I currently have the ba premium black Amex card as well as the Amex gold card. If I cancel the gold card will my MR points remain on the account?
