The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 29th March

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/03/29/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-29th-march/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

Finally got through to EZY today after 1hr on hold and got a cash refund agreed. Booking has now disappeared.
I’m not too bothered if it takes a couple weeks, I’m going to make about £70 on the currency vs claiming a chargeback via the bank

    • Charlieface says:

Thurs. Tried on Friday but got cut off after 3hr on hold. Was gonna do a chargeback but Nationwide credit card said today to call back tomorrow

  • The Original Nick says:

Eurostar Question, I’ve just read this on Eurostar which has changed since last weekend:
To provide you with flexibility and peace of mind we are able to offer you an eVoucher if you are due to commence your outbound Eurostar journey between Friday 13 March and Monday 1 June 2020.

We will offer you an eVoucher equivalent to the full value of your current Eurostar train or Eurostar package (train + hotel) booking. You can use this eVoucher online to make a new booking by 30 September 2020, to travel to any Eurostar destination up to the end of March 2021 (subject to availability).
Where do I stand with getting a refund in cash as I paid cash? I used my Amex Platinum to book. Due to travel mid may and haven’t had any confirmation of train being cancelled.

    • Lady London says:

I would read your ts and cs from when you booked to find out whether you are entitled to a cash refund and under what circumstances.

If you are and if it’s not forthcoming, then contact cardco to refund instead. They would only do so according to the ts and cs though. They are only offering vouchers it seems as a concession, and you would still have to pay any increased fare price as well as the voucher. However if they don’t run the train you booked?and your ticket on your side,is not changeable? personally I think that might be a case to request a refund and,if denied, go to card company.

  • Shoestring says:

but once you put Covid-19 in its place, you will see it is little more than the common cold

which means lots of things due to the over-reaction

personally, I’m worried about my wife coming out too soon to spoil my fun in the sun, it’s like I’m single again (though not chasing any girls!) – just independent

investment window – yes, markets at a huge low, you’ll wince in a couple of years if you don’t get in big right now, I told you: it’s obvs

  • ChrisBCN says:

Personally I have never disagreed with his point of view, as indeed that is something to be protected. What I do take offence to, is someone giving terrible medical advice, which could cause genuine harm to others. It’s correct and right to call that out.

Then there is the rather obvious trolling trying to get a rise out of of people…

  • R P McMurphy says:

So is bringing in people’s elderly relatives. You can’t deliberately bait people, and let’s not make any mistake here, that’s exactly what he’s doing, then cry bullying when people take the bait. Actually to be fair it’s not him that’s crying bullying, more the sycophants.

  • Nelson Piquet says:

Your trolling is starting to lack originality, surely with all that time on your hands you can do better? Have a beer and try again.

  • Alexander Williams says:

Remember when this site was about travel and not just trolls attacking shoestring?

Can we go back to that, please.

  • Liam says:

Is anybody here *not* transferring (or trying to transfer) Virgin points to Hilton? I have about 66,000 Virgin points sitting in my account, plus two LHR–LAX flights booked for August for 50,000 points total (economy bookings upgraded to Premium using the voucher). In the normal course of events Virgin points are worth a lot more to me than Hilton points, which is why I’m a little reluctant. Thoughts (either way) would be welcome.

    • The Original Nick says:

I have 200k but don’t know what to do either/

      • R P McMurphy says:

Flip a coin? My view is it’s better to potentially regret getting rid of them and at least be guaranteed something, than potentially regret hanging on to them and ending up with nothing. Each to their own though.

        • The Original Nick says:

I’m with you on that. I’ve only ever flown Virgin long haul onve in UC so I’ve been collecting for another UC to NYC with partner bit now I’m considering transfering.

        • philco says:

You actually aren’t guaranteed with the Hilton transfer. There is risk there too. It is possible that VS will hold up the transfers, will go under before they can be executed and/or fail to pay Hilton resulting in a claw-back. I can see somebody saying the Hilton transfer is less risky but guaranteed at this point no way.

          • R P McMurphy says:

That’s very true, although I was only really saving them for a couple of trips to Japan on ANA next year, I don’t really care about Virgin Upper, and while it’s possible they may get a bail out in the short term, I don’t see them surviving long enough for the points to be valuable for me, especially with all the experts predictions and the computer models re the timeline of the virus. It’s possible there may be a Hilton devaluation but with 250k VA points, that’s not going to make an earth shattering difference anyway.

    • TGLoyalty says:

I’m hanging on to mine and hoping they Survive or Delta honour them.

No use for another 350k Hilton points.

    • philco says:

I am sitting on 700kish of VS points (including some likely to be cancelled award reservations) and I am not transferring. Now they “only” represent about 11% of my total points haul so if they go away it will sting but I’ll still be fine points-wise.

The way I see it there are three likely ways this goes:

1). VS goes under soon. In this instance I think the folks transferring points to Hilton now and in past few days are too late. Either the points won’t make it or if they do there is the possibility they are clawed-back by Hilton when they aren’t paid. In this case whether you stick with VS or HH you lose.

2). VS survives. In this instance your points get to HH and Hilton is paid. You know have taken the haircut in value and those who stuck with VS are likely ahead.

3). VS goes under some months or later from now. Points get to HH and Hilton is paid. Those who stick with VS points aren’t able to use them before VS goes under. In this case transferring to Hilton is the winner.

Basically you make your decision and takes your chances.

    • MattB says:

I’ve cashed ours in, about 220k in total. We had a chat and my wife wasn’t fussed about flying upper even though the clubhouse is her favourite lounge. To fly where we like to go, (west coast US) we would still be a long way off to get enough as can only go peak times anyway. We still have over 400k avios so aren’t far off 3 trips from that using 241s.

I reckon we could get close to £1500 of value using these in Hilton.

      • Louise says:

We bit the bullet and transferred out too, for the same reasons. (Avios and 2for1 still to use)
There has been times when the flexibility of Virgin points have been good to us but ultimately there have been some really cheap ex EU flights and maybe we will look to use them, who knows!

    • Marcw says:

I’ve got rid of them. Virgin Atlantic is not going to survive this storm.
