The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 29th March

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/03/29/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-29th-march/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

I can’t find any posts yesterday mentioning going to the shop for beer, but as he’s not in the UK and not subject to the UK ‘lockdown’, how is it anyone’s business but his own if he decides to go to the shop for beer? Good for him.

    • TGLoyalty says:

for me it’s not only not their business but they continue with childish personal insults, getting boring.

Let’s stick to general chat people.

      • Nope says:

It’s everyone’s business when they were specifically told not to travel, to ensure the safety of other UK residents.

        • pking says:

How can someone leaving the country, before the lockdown, have any effect on UK residents ? This is just childish bullying.

          • Nope says:

Seriously? After all the speeches daily by the members of the government about the importance of social isolation, this was before the lockdown, about how important it was to avoid being in contact with others, you don’t see how going through a busy airport could affect other people. Bullying, do me a favour.

        • TGLoyalty says:

no one is banned from leaving the UK and I’m assuming he wasn’t banned from entry to the country he’s in so it really isn’t your business.

          • Nope says:

I’m not banned from coughing my way around Tesco, that doesn’t mean it’s not inconsiderate and dangerous. When it’s something that affects everyone, it’s everyone’s business, banned or not.

          • Nope says:

Johnson said he hoped people behaved like adults and didn’t need to be babied into doing the right thing by banning them. Guess he was talking straight to people like you.

      • ChrisBCN says:

The PJ’s are definitely a better thing to talk about! Maybe this deserves its own article!

        • Cat says:

Indeed! Rob et al, do you have enough PJs to compare and contrast and do a definitive top 5 airline PJs list?

        • ChrisBCN says:

Complete with photos and ranked on comfort, fit, durability, style….

        • Cat says:

…not to mention sweat wicking ability when feverish, suitability for day or night PJs and smell after wearing them for 3 days straight!

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

Just found my old paint-stained BA First PJs.

Remember the look on the cabin crew’s face when I said:

These ones have First on the front of them, they must be my wife’s. Mine will have Second on them!

      • David S says:

        1st place- Etihad First PJs
        2nd place- Qatar First PJs
        3rd place- BA First PJs

        • philco says:

For me (these are the only PJs I have had):
1). Cathay Pacific (and these are quite a bit above the rest)
          2). Etihad
          3). ANA
          4). British Airways

        • Miyagi says:

          1st Swiss
          2nd Cathay
          3rd JAL

          M&S beats them all though!

        • Lady London says:

          Only ever had 2:
          1. Qatar Business – 4 pairs. Still going strong after many washes.
          2. Old BA First. They disintegrated…literally disintegratedin the first wash. I had to pick the pj
‘s off the filter of the washing machine.

I love Calida and wish some airline would do a deal for their pj”s

        • Cat says:

          1st Cathay beige
          2nd Cathay green
          3rd Lufty
          4th BA
          5th Virgin

    • Aston100 says:

Even worse, the mods here seem to be deleting comments that dare criticise dear old Doctor Shoestring (has happened to some of mine last few days), yet his dangerous views on his so called ‘pussycat virus’ are allowed on here.

  • Chabuddy geezy says:

There must have been a new record for amount of posts that had to be deleted this week. I feel sorry for Rob…

    • Doug M says:

Rob is paying the price for allowing one person to dominate the comments with a lot of posts which are little more than trolling. Others get angry and counter, some of which are just expletive insults. But the truth is the one poster does as much as possible to encourage this sort of response, he feeds on attention. I’m guessing a great many of his posts are alcohol fuelled.
Rob’s site, Rob’s rules. But you don’t need a ‘big brain’ to see where the problem really lies.

  • Matthew says:

Another voucher/flight credit question I’m afraid.

I booked a roundtrip with Expedia from DUB-LAS via LHR as a single itinerary with Aer Lingus and Virgin Atlantic. The tickets are issued on Virgin stock. The flights have now been cancelled by Virgin and Expedia offered me a voucher which I have accepted but not yet received. Their holding e-mail says the voucher can used for future travel with “the airline”. I presume in this case the airline is Virgin as they ticketed the whole itinerary?

Also does anyone know if I can book future travel with Virgin that includes sectors on other airlines (like the original itinerary) as long as Virgin can ticket the whole itinerary?

Finally if there are any other Expedia customers awaiting vouchers, how long did this take after receiving the holding e-mail to say a voucher would be sent separately?

Any knowledge on this would be appreciated.

    • TGLoyalty says:

I think the lack of advice here will be because it’s a very specific scenario that I think only Expedia or Virgin could answer.

You were entitled to a full refund though as they cancelled your flight which might have been more simple.

  • Peter Taysum says:

Had flights NCL to LHR just cancelled. More than 72 hours ahead but I phoned. BA Gold answered on second ring. Offered refund immediately “but it will take a long time”.

Holiday to AGP flights and Car hire; same offered refund immediately.

So am reassured. Am waiting for next ones to be cancelled otherwise will accept Voucher.

  • Lewis King says:

Waiting on a refund from Qatar for two weeks now. Is this usual? How long usually, does anyone have any first hand experience?

    • J says:

How long it takes usually might not be a helpful guide to how long it is taking now. But I think every airline right now is taking their time to process refund… You’ll get it eventually, and you’re in a much better situation with Qatar than Lufthansa, BA etc. No idea how long I’ll have to wait for my LH refund as they’re not processing refunds until further notice

    • Rob says:

Virgin is quoting 90 days at the moment to get a cash refund ….

    • Genghis says:

I cancelled 12 March and still waiting. Takes up to 28 days. If nothing after that I’ll call them and then contact Amex.

  • Stephen says:

Be careful if messaging Virgin on WhatsApp and text.

They didn’t reply to my request on WhatsApp for over 24 hours to transfer points to Hilton. I saw some people had more luck with SMS, got connected to someone who transferred the miles. I sent a message on WhatsApp saying this has been resolved, please don’t transfer the miles again.

Woke up this morning to a message on WhatsApp saying they have also transferred the miles.

Does anyone know if its possible to get them reversed?

    • Axel says:

Have you checked your account balance. Mine were reduced straight after confirmation by Virgin on WA.

You still need to pass security to get the miles transferred btw.

      • Stephen says:

Yep two transfers of 150,000, rather than just be one

        • Secret Squirrel says:

Sorry to say but I think once points leave your account you cannot reverse the transaction.

  • Benilyn says:

Speculative, but what are people doing with their Avios stash? Worried about a deval, so brainstorming what to do. I guess could book something for 2021, or what’s is the best way to get them to Hilton?

I have 300k, used it on a 2-4-1 but refunded due to flights cancelled. All earnt from cards and none from flying so maybe a bit more emotional about them given could’ve earnt in cash / non-airline points instead.

    • philco says:

I am not sure why you are worried about a devaluation with Avios. Historically loyalty programs have been more likely to devalue in good times not bad times. Points are a great way for airlines to “sell” distressed inventory without trashing their cash prices too much. And they are likely going to have quite a bit of distressed inventory over the next year or two. I would say for those airlines/programs that make it through this that there may be quite a few good opportunities to use your points. It is the silver lining I hope in the cloud of losing some of my points when certain programs go under.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

I believe also that in previous bad times that Tesco offerEd AVIOS bonuses on conversions.
Another good reason to hold onto clubcard vouchers.

      • Benilyn says:

Interesting point. I’m pretty new to this tbh, less than 2Y so was leaning on a deval being conservative.

  • Henry says:

But yes i agree with you if you have money to invest its always been a good time to put some to work when prices are down 40%
