The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 29th March

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions. It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind. At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article. This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article. Hi Folks

I booked some flights for October 2020 from LHR>MIA using an amex 2-4-1 voucher. I think I am right in assuming I can get all my money, plus the voucher, minus £35 per/person back if I decide to cancel.

I also had to book connecting flights on a separate booking from ABZ>LHR as there was no avois availability. I paid part cash/part avois for these. Can anyone advise me what, if anything, I’d get if I were to cancel these?

  Yes on the redemptions and right now I think you’d get nothing on the other flight unless it cancelled in any reshuffles later in the year.

I’ve made two bookings with Expedia.de. Booked in June 2019. The flights have been cancelled by KLM due to the current situation. My plan was to change the dates. However, Expedia have gone ahead and cancelled my bookings citing full cancellation of the reservation by KLM or by me. I was sent an email to share this good news. Both did not happen.
After contacting KLM, they in fact were happy to reschedule my trip. It is impossible to contact Expedia! I’m stuck! I fear my tickets are now lost.

  There are some properties which deviate significantly though. Like the difference in ‘value’ between using miles for an economy long haul vs a first redemption.

Looking to book a VS Reward flight but want to be doubly sure of it’s cancellation policy (obvious reasons).

The fare for the Upper Class Redemption Ticket states “TAXES AND SURCHARGES UNUSED GOVERNMENT AND AIRPORT TAXES WILL BE REFUNDED. CARRIER IMPOSED SURCHARGES WILL NOT BE REFUNDED”

So, Taxes and surcharges will be refunded but carrier imposed surcharges will not be refunded? A carrier surcharge is a surcharge…

Do they refund carrier surcharges along with the regular taxes if you cancel a reward flight?

  I don’t know the answer to your question, but one other thing that might be relevant to you is to consider what happens if VS go bust. Would any insurance you have cover you?

      I booked 3 months ago an upper redemption to Miami in November.
      Paid all taxes by credit card.
      Spoke to amex re if Virgin west bust.
      Advised they would refund money paid but not purchase us tickets on another airline. They say that is fully compliant with Sec 75 and they do not have to put you in a position to fly!

  In my experience it’s fully refundable except for a cancellation fee (I think around £50 each way for an Upper Class fare but don’t quote me on that).

  Yes they do refund everything bar the admin fee of £30 (might be slightly more now) the money refund does take a few weeks to process (points instant)
