Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Friday 27th March

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

We will review how this works after a few days:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

If I want to keep hold of my Amex points on my platinum business card but get a pro-rata refund, is it possible just to downgrade the card rather than cancel and transfer out?

    • the_real_a says:

Yes – i went to downgrade to Gold and got first year free. Others prefer Green.

  • VeggieDelight says:

Hello as a teetotal vegetarian, is there any major advantage in choosing first class over club suite?
Would I benefit proportionately given the additional cost (avios) of first over suites?
This would be originating from LHR.
    Cheers.

Gold wing, CCR, Group 1 boarding, bigger bed/seat, more attentive service.

I’d say that’s worth spending a few Avios on!

    • Bilbo Baggins says:

Not really, the Concorde Room isn’t that special, and the First cabin isn’t that special either, especially on the 747. If it’s a day flight it might be worth the upgrade to you, if it’s a night flight I really wouldn’t bother.

  • Matt says:

Cancelled Virgin Atlantic flights on 3 March over phone, but still not had a refund of taxes and fees x3 as promised. Also no confirmation email. Anyone else still waiting for Virgin Atlantic refunds for circa this amount of time?

    • Michael says:

Unfortunately yes, I’ve been waiting for a refund since Feb 29 🙁

    • TGLoyalty says:

I believe posters have said virgin have mentioned up to 90 days to process refunds.

I suspect cash is fast drying up and they are trying to keep themselves afloat with carefully managing refunds.

  • Nick says:

I have a converted old 7 night Marriott Travel Package booking for April looking to cancel. Does anyone please know/have experience if I cancel it if I get back 7 “e-certificate” nights for the same catagory I booked or instead what Marriott value the stay at in points as per confirmation which is not very high 105,000pts?

Would it be better trying to get through on phones and seeing if reservation dates be moved beyond original expiry date of travel package please instead? Thanks

Further to my previous question about getting an email from
    VAPartner.miles@Fly.virgin.com

This was after using the text number to move some miles to Hilton. I contacted the text number again and they confirmed it was a legit email.
It was poorly written, with only first name used and the Virgin account number not supplied and the information asked for included asking for “etc etc”.
Thought I’d update for anyone else in the same situation.

    • Genghis says:

Thanks for confirmation. It seemed a bit dodgy at first sight, I know, but after my DD seemed OK.

  • Secret Squirrel says:

Hilton Gatwick closing Until further notice due to Govt guidelines I was informed. Full refund being issued.

  • Steve O'Hara says:

I’ve flights booked for April for a trip to Cyprus. BA have cancelled my Belfast London, London Cyprus and Cyprus London flights but for some reason have not yet cancelled the London Belfast flight. I’m worried if I go to trigger to cancel the flights for the refund that they won’t refund the full lot of avios, tax etc and the 241 voucher properly seeing as the last leg hasn’t been cancelled by BA yet. Or do we think it’s safe enough to do now?

  • meta says:

Gatwick’s North Terminal closing for a month at least and any flights will be operating 2-10pm only.
