The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 26th March

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

We will review how this works after a few days:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

If someone has a booking on Qatar that was made via an OTA and the outbound flight has been cancelled but the return has yet to be cancelled, what options do they have?

Presumably they would have to contact the OTA and not Qatar, but would they be entitled to a full refund?

    • Lady London says:

If your flight sequence on your ticket departs from Europe you are covered by EC261 which goes you the right to choose a full refund of the actual she ticket if airline cancels any flight on it. You are not legally obliged to a accept a voucher even if the airline days that’s all they’re offering.

You may have to pay an admin fee if you booked through an agent if their terms included that

QR won’t talk to you direct, most likely, and will send you to agent. So advise agent you want a refund, ask them to get confirmation of refund from QR. Most likely QR will try only voucher. You have the full right to a cash refund. If you get nowhere after reasonable efforts go to your insurance and after that if paid on credit card ask cardco for Section 75 (s.75) refund or chargeback. Charge cards may also operate chareback but not s75.

OT Hi, my IHG Premium card anniversary was beginning of March. I’ve received my first statement after anniversary last week with the account fee posted. In the statement there’s only a small charge for interest along with the fee and no other spend.

If I cancel now, can I just pay the interest charge and avoid paying the card fee? Or can’t get the card fee back at this point?

    Thanks

Easyjet is pulling the exact same overcharging trick when passengers change flights.

Back in November they were regularly asking me to pay large amounts in cash to them as a “fare difference” when I changed flights. This was in addition to the value of the flight I was changing.

I was quoted total amounts to change easyJet flights several times, of, say, £60 or £85. They said this was the fare difference. The trouble was, those same exact flights could be purchased on the internet, at exactly the same time, for £13 or £16. There was a “fare difference” only if you phone easyJet.

    Hi guys

I ordered some wine through BA Avios. It didn’t arrive and laithwaites say they never received the order from BA. any idea what I can do?

    Thanks

    • Anna says:

Do you mean you paid with Avios and did you originally get an order confirmation from BA? If so, and you have proof that Laithwaite’s never got the order, you will need to take it up with BA, which could be a bit difficult at the moment.

I wish people wouldn’t say (or write) “flaunt” when they mean “flout” (the lockdown rules). Being stuck at home is bringing out my inner grammar pedant!

    • Lady London says:

One of the most egregious examples.

And when did babies start being called “newborns” ?

Does Curve still work with NS&I?

My transaction was declined, but I also tried using Curve on a normal shopping site and it was also declined, so not sure if it’s a problem with my account

I have a one way Avios booking GCM-LHR-MAN for late April which I haven’t been able to cancel online as I just get a message saying the only the person who booked it can do this, even though it was me who booked it!
I’ve just had a text from BA saying LHR-MAN is cancelled (thanks for stranding us in LHR, BA, even though this won’t actually happen as we can’t get to GCM to start with). Should I assume GCM-LHR will be cancelled in due course, GCM being on lockdown to commercial flights? I am hoping so as I think that would mean I would be refunded, Avios, fees and seat selection.

    • Harry T says:

      Is your javascript enabled?

      • Anna says:

Yes. I’m not too worried yet as it’s a month away so plenty of chance for BA to cancel the long haul leg.
