Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HFP chat thread – Tuesday 24th March

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

We will review how this works after a few days:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

I’m trying to get through to BA to speak about a flight that they have cancelled half of in the the next 72 hrs, but every time I call, I can’t even wait on hold. Any suggestions about what time of day might be the best time to call to try to get through?

  • Voltron says:

My Monese account also got blocked yesterday, just got an email sent, no notice etc, was expecting it tbh as was doing several “topups” at Co-OP.
Does anyone know if it will leave any negative marks on credit report? The monese account didnt even appear on my credit report as far ass i could see.

    • Andy Williams says:

Did they ask for occupation and pay slips?

Also interested in this regarding credit report…

      • Voltron says:

Nope didnt even message me to ask anything, just closed account with no prior warning

    • Andy Williams says:

I’ve seen quite a few comments about Monese and closed accounts, I think they are clamping down on the people who top up at coop or doing a mass culling..

Hopefully no longer term impacts on credit report?

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Yep, they will freeze your funds for 3-4 weeks even if you supply all relevant documentation.

        • Andy Williams says:

Any repercussions from Monese closing your account?

          • Nick_C says:

Shouldn’t be. Monese isn’t a credit account and doesn’t show up on my Experian Credit Report.

  • Brasov says:

Massive advert at the top of the screen for Weezchat costing £4.50 per week. Virus or approved advertising here?

    • Grant says:

I think that is Google Ads space so probably related to your search history

      • Brasov says:

Thanks. Well I shall turn off ads then if they are not going to be related to hotels / flights / points.

  • BlueHorizonuk says:

Etihad and Emirates suspending flights IMMEDIATELY after UAE changed the suspension date.

  • U old git says:

In these unusual times a more usual HFP request. We are off to Canada later this year (maybe) and flying Air Canada signature class, anyone experienced this as we are not sure which are the best seats for a couple, i.e. centre seats or aisle between. Hope someone can help. We land at Montreal.

    • BJ says:

Years since I flew AC so I will refrain from comment on that. However, if this is your first visit then I highly recommend allowing some time in Montreal for a day trip to Quebec City either by hire car or coach tour.

      • U old git says:

Thanks BJ. If we actually get there we will try to include this visit

  • Osaka Des says:

People who are rough sleeping are amongst the most vulnerable and at the moment lack the support they need.
As far as I am aware, BA, VIRGIN and other airlines have grounded almost all their long haul planes. As HOP readers are aware, these contain large numbers of flat beds.
    Just a thought……

    • Shoestring says:

plus you’re suggesting a petri dish for Covid-19

    • jack says:

Empty hotel rooms would be a bit more practical – and lots of capacity now, stayed at the Yotel at Terminal 4 a few nights ago; I was one of only two guests.

      • Rob says:

If IHG was still doing Accelerate I could imagine lots of (unsound) mattress runs now!

      • marcw says:

But hotels have to close anyway as well (in the UK).

    • BJ says:

Hotel accommodation is being made available for them.

Let’s hope there’s a Hilton devaluation for anyone who cashed out.

    • Shoestring says:

why would you wish financial harm or impairment on other people for cashing out to Hilton?

      • jack says:

Because Virgin customer services have better things to be doing right now – and a hoard of people cashing out to Hilton is obviously going to put unnecessary pressure on Virgin at a difficult time. Admittedly probably insignificant in the scheme of things but still seems selfish – bit like grabbing more than you need in the supermarket!

        • Shoestring says:

well ‘selfish’ isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it means looking out for your own interests, and that usually means looking out for your family’s interests as well – all very natural & normal

I’m so pleased Covid-19 isn’t killing anybody much under 30 (barring underlying conditions) – think how much worse it would be if day to day you were worried about your kids getting it & perishing

          • Shoestring says:

let’s hope I actually get my online groceries order on the 28th – up to £600 already and I keep remembering some more things to buy 🙂

          • Genghis says:

I transferred out. Was I being selfish? Perhaps. But people are naturally selfish as they look after themselves. Virgin haven’t given me those miles out of the goodness of their heart.

Do I wish direct harm on others, however, no.

        • Ming the Merciless says:

@robburgess did you keep your 1m FC points with virgin or cash out?

      • Rob says:

That money, even if it all went to the airline (and its not, the hotels and cruise line are getting a share) would last 3-4 weeks at best.

        • Novice says:

True and he has health clubs too… If this is the amount for collectively spending on his brand then it’s not enough…

  • joe green says:

Anyway got any experience with Hotels.com reward nights extending validity?
I have 1 free night and close to 2nd but due to expire this week and would like to know if they will agree an extension?

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Book a cheap hotel somewhere? That’ll extend it by a year.

I find that 9/10 I get the “how was your check-in” hours before I’ve actually checked in as hotels confirm you’ve arrived when you havn’t to get their money…
