Morrisons supermarkets will no longer award Virgin points from late March

We told you yesterday that you will no longer be able to earn Virgin Flying Club points at Waitrose from 26th March.

What I didn’t realise at the time is that the Virgin Atlantic deal with Morrisons supermarkets is also being dropped.

The closing date is a little later. As you can see below, you can earn until 29th March:

How many Virgin Points do I earn in Morrisons?

If you are not yet registered for this scheme, you can still benefit for the next week.

You will earn points in Virgin Flying Club for every £1 you spend in-store at Morrisons.

You need to log in to see how many Virgin points you will earn. It will vary from person to person. I get:

For purchases under £20, you earn a flat 1 Virgin point per £1

For £20+, you need to log in to your Virgin Flying Club account and check. I am currently earning 8 Virgin points per £1 until 25th March.

This is very generous.

In theory, you cannot earn on:

“Morrison’s cafes, petrol stations, garden centres, pharmacies, cash offices, gift cards, flower world, seasonal stores or on dry cleaning.”

However, since gift card purchases are processed at standard tills, I struggle to see how you will not be awarded the points. One option is to buy some Morrisons gift cards now, as you will earn points, and basically pay in advance for your shopping over the next few months.

This offer is part of the Virgin Atlantic in-store shopping scheme. To sign up, you need to register your credit and debit cards via the link above. Make sure you register your partners (and possibly parents!) cards as well.

It isn’t clear why this offer is being closed, as it is only six weeks since it launched. It is fair to say, of course, that no-one needs any incentive to visit the supermarket at the moment and these schemes are expensive – especially at 8 points per £1.
