British Airways suspends all flights from London City Airport

British Airways has announced that it is suspending all flights from London City Airport from Monday 23rd March.

The suspension is initially set to run until Saturday 4th April although you would imagine that there is a high chance of this being extended.

Passengers will be transferred onto flights from London Heathrow or London Gatwick, or can claim a refund.  As we discussed yesterday, anyone who chooses to cancel is being ‘encouraged’ to take a credit voucher rather than the cash to which they are entitled.

This is a serious blow for the staff of BA CityFlyer, which is run as a separate business inside British Airways.

The pilots and crew are only trained to operate the Embraer aircraft and will have no choice but to be grounded during this period.

Hi. Need some advise. I’m in Mumbai my flight to return has been cancelled. BA have not notified or emailed to cancel and rebook. My itinerary on the app and my account has been taken off so cannot rebook or do anything. Is this standard procedure. Due to fly back on 27 but latest India have stopped all international flights to anywhere in India from 22 to 29 March. Appreciate any advice. Thanks

O/T after cancelling my upcoming Melia NYC reservation I now have over 140k points due to expire in 2 months. Other than trying to move to BA which isn’t great value is my only option to buy more to extend a yr? I could do a placeholder booking further out but when I came to cancel that my points would effectiively expire.

    • Shoestring says:

you only need to buy EUR5 of points to get a year’s extension

  • Grant says:

Apologies if this has been covered but I couldn’t see it.

Accor has changed its modification / cancellation policy to allow cancellation of non flexible bookings in areas subject to specific government travel restrictions. This includes the UK and Europe but the current policy would only allow cancellations for stays between 17 March and 1st April. For other areas the period runs to 30th April.

    • Lou says:

I’ve tried to go through this cycle. They will only allow you to move non-refundable stays in non-locked down countries until the rest of the year.

I had a booking in Rotterdam. I had a look at (quite!) a few different dates. They’ve doubled the price for stays. And yes, you have to pay the difference.

I was not happy, and will be questioning whether I stay in an Accor property again

      • Neily says:

I changed my dates to July and didn’t pay any difference (they weren’t being generous, there just wasnt a rate difference on those dates)

  • Rui N. says:

OT: how long do Melia points usually take to post after a stay? Left my hotel last Friday, and posts haven’t posted yet. TIA

  • Flightsy says:

I think the City cancellations are definitely running beyond 4th April. I had a flight to Edinburgh booked for 8th April and it was cancelled by BA a few days ago. I’m not complaining – these are difficult and unusual times for everybody. I assume the return flight I had booked for 14th April will also be cancelled but will just wait and see. Really feel for all the BA staff, especially those who are having to take unpaid leave.

    • Sandra B says:

I’ve had 28th April cancelled but have to phone for cash refund of entire flights as only a voucher being offered.

  • Ben says:

OT. Just some positive news…I had a non refundable booking with Hotels.com I tried calling they said I it needs to be with 7 days, went on the online chat and offered an automatic refund with 24 hours. Very efficent

    • Simon says:

Good result, I wonder how long the generosity of some firms can last.

    • Alex Sm says:

Hope to do that as well. Actually have a flight into City in May from Rotterdam and a Hotel.com stay there (Eurovision is not going ahead, so might need to cancel the whole thing). Btw, any word on Eurostar? Are they cancelling services as well?

      • Nigel says:

Likewise Alex regarding flights. Luckily accommodation it is free cancellation.

I’m holding out for the flights to be cancelled and get a voucher for hopefully next year’s contest. Luckily the flights were an Avios booking.

      • Mikeact says:

Eurostar services slashed….Paris only…currently three per hour.

        • meta says:

They only offer eVoucher, but if you want a full refund then you’ll need to call. This only in place until 7 April. After that who knows.

        • Genghis says:

          3 / day

    • Travel Strong says:

How do you mean ‘automatic’ refund? Did you speak to an actual agent on the live chat, or the bot? I cannot get through on there, and the bot just states it as a nonrefundable booking.

      • Travel Strong says:

Cancel this query – since yesterday my hotels.com reservation has changed to allowing free cancellation and full refund without dealing with an agent – just able to do it myself in the app! 🙂

  • yorkieflyer says:

Curve payment to the Seagulls online produces a open Curve app message, authorises, but Brighton then logs straight out. No payment or pending charge showing anywhere, balance due and credit limits unchanged.

    • Brighton Belle says:

I have never had a Curve to Seagulls payment work. Always generates a problem message.

    • Gulz says:

Happened to me a few days ago. Was a bug in Brighton website. Was able to make the payment the next day

      • Yorkieflyer says:

Thanks wasn’t sure where the problem was. App works fine now sorted

  • Andrew says:

Any info on what happens if BA cancel an OptionTown booking?

    • Lady London says:

I would guess they would refund pro rata based on what % of the number of flights you booked, is the cancelled flight. Or % of what you paid overall.

Of course they will try to get you to rebook but I believe the above is what you could request as fair and should get.

Check if any special terms on your Option Town booking. A prescient lawyer might have put in a clause to deny you actual money back.
