Workaround found. How to trigger an online British Airways flight refund using Google Chrome

Our main article today is about BA’s unwillingness to let you claim an online cash refund for an Avios flight.

We have now found a way of triggering a cash refund – as opposed to a voucher – without calling British Airways (and waiting hours in the queue …..)

This next chunk of text is for getting a refund of your taxes on Avios bookings which have not yet been cancelled by BA.

For a refund on a CASH or Avios BA flight booking which has been cancelled, scroll down this page and read the PS. at the bottom.

If you have a CASH BA flight booking which is NOT showing as cancelled, do NOT follow any of the advice on this page.  You are not yet able to get a cash refund.  You either need to accept the British Airways travel voucher offered or wait until your flight is cancelled and then follow the steps above.

To be clear:

Got a cash booking which is not yet cancelled?   Sorry, there is no way of getting a cash refund.  You need to accept the BA voucher or wait for your flight to be cancelled.

How can you stop British Airways forcing a flight voucher on you?

In summary ….. if you turn off JavaScript in Google Chrome then ba.com will take you to the full cancellation page.

Here’s proof it works:

How to trigger an online Avios flight refund using Google Chrome

This is how to do it, using the Google Chrome broswer.

Go into ‘Manage My Booking’ on ba.com and select ‘Cancellation options for this booking’.  You must be logged in and using the BA account of the person who booked, ie the person who is named on the confirmation email.

You are taken to the ‘consent’ screen:

Do NOT continue the process, as you will only be taken to the ‘Future Travel Voucher’ page which you don’t want.  In order to cancel, you need to first disable JavaScript in Chrome.  (If you are not using Chrome, you need to find out how your browser handles JavaScript.)

This is how you do it:

Click the ‘three dots’ in the top right corner of Chrome

Scroll down to ‘Settings’ and click – this opens a new ‘Settings’ page

Click ‘Privacy & Security’ in the left menu – this brings the ‘Privacy & Security’ section to the top

Click ‘Site Settings’ in the ‘Privacy & Security’ section

Scroll down to the ‘Permissions’ section and click ‘JavaScript’

Turn off JavaScript by toggling the ‘Allowed’ button

Do NOT close the window as you need to turn it back on later.  Switch back to the window where you have the ba.com ‘Consent’ page open.  Tick the ‘Please tick here’ box and click ‘Continue’.

You will now be on the standard cash cancellation screen.

Turn JavaScript back on.

You can cancel your booking for a full cash refund of your taxes, and with your Avios returned.

But don’t forget …..

You will be still be paying the £35 per person cancellation fee on a long-haul booking.  If you want to avoid this, you need to wait until BA cancels your flight automatically, assuming it does not operate.

If you paid for seat selection, you LOSE this money if you cancel.  You may prefer to take the travel voucher as I believe the seat selection value is retained, either as part of the voucher or as a credit for free seat selection when you rebook.

PS.  How to get a refund for a CASH British Airways booking

If you are looking to refund a CASH booking which has already been cancelled, this is an alternative set of steps:

1) Go into Manage My Booking on ba.com and select the flight shown as cancelled

2) Go into your browser’s settings and disable JavaScript – for Chrome, follow the instructions I outlined earlier in this article for cancelling an Avios booking

3) Go back to ‘Manage My Booking’ and click on the ‘Cancel and Refund’ button which is just under the cancellation notice

4) Confirm that you now see the correct cash refund form and not the voucher refund form

5) Turn JavaScript back on in your browser settings

6) Click on the “Yes” radio button to select that you are a person in the booking

7) When nothing happens press “Enter” on your keyboard. (this works in Firefox and Chrome). The page refreshes and shows an error at the top of the page “email address invalid”

8) Click on the “Yes” radio button again

9) Complete and submit the form

You will see this screen:

British Airways cancellation

For absolute clarity, do NOT cancel a CASH flight if you have not received an email from British Airways saying that your flight is cancelled.  If your flight is still showing as operating, cancelling means you lose EVERYTHING except a nominal amount in taxes.

If only one of the sectors in your booking is cancelled can you get a refund for the whole booking?

  • Christopher Haysom says:

Well I just tried the javascript from here in Uk but now blocked from entering ba site at all because of ‘unusual traffic from your network.’ Also i think they must be trying to stop this. Initially when I logged into ‘Manage my Booking’ the details don’t show properly but just very low level script with no logos or buttons available. When i went back to after blocking javascript it said I was now blocked and had to ring to unblock. Well tried ringing several times to cancel but always says we are too busy to take your call. was due to fly Lon to phoenix 2/7 time.

    Data point.
Just off the phone with You First. Answered immediately gave my details and then cut off. They called me back!!!!!
My 241 F booking cancelled about 10 days but no cash refund on my card yet. They told me the issue is the total shutdown in India where all refunds are managed. This work has come back to the UK and older cancellations are taken around 10 days. Anything cancelled from now will be at least 21 days.

I will give them till the end of the week, then lodge a charge back.
I find Amex are superb with charge backs.

    • Big Dave says:

The only charge back I have done with Amex, was for paying for a pizza online that I had to pay cash for as the pizza [place did not receive the payment and would not deliver otherwise.
they refunded my part of the £22 after much complaining….. guess you have to be platinum to get better luck in the chargeback area

      • Harry T says:

Just did a couple of chargebacks for flights on my Gold Amex account and they were approved immediately. I mean, I also hold a Platinum but I doubt it helped.

    • Anna says:

I am in the exact same position as you 😩. The only thing I’m desperate to get back is the companion voucher as I want to re-use it quite soon.

  • Big Dave says:

As my flight seems to still be scheduled for tomorrow – i have had no option but to cancel and accept the voucher….. lets see how that pans out

I also am still waiting a refund for an easyjet flight that was cancelled by them a couple of weeks ago…

Firstworld problems I guess but don’t understand how it takes seconds to get refunds to your card in a clothes shop (remember them we used to be able to go to?) and not from airlines

    • Big Dave says:

The voucher form was just a fill in the booking code and email and phone and that you have consent from all parties for the booking to receive the vouchers for them

the booking remains active and i’m still being asked to check in etc

  • Miss Nicole Jackson says:

Just done this after finding BA redirecting me to the voucher page. Thanks!! Super cheeky of BA and loads will fall for it. I get that times are difficult but this is a cheap trick when flights have been booked on Avios.

  • jeffrey collett says:

After going round in circles on BA website and phone numbers I found a cash refund form quite easily via BA customer Relations ,they require all necessary details for a refund including bank details ..Having said that it has not achieved much so far beyond a case number ,The reply from customer relations told me they were not dealing with refunds and directed me to the main 0800 727 800 number and guess what ?,yes, they told me to contact Customer Relations who were dealing with refunds !!!

  • Allen McLaughlin says:

Followed your instructions to the letter, the page refreshed shortly after I proceeded to enter my details (using autofill). I am now being processed for a voucher for a flight to a now cancelled for 365 days event. Can’t even use the voucher for that and won’t be flying BA again.

  • Nelli says:

I’ve booked a flight with BA through Expedia. The dates of the flights supposed to be 24-31 May. Now Expedia informed me that I have to cancel with BA while BA instructs to do it with Expedia. I prefer to get the full refund. Could someone PLEASE let me know how to proceed?

    • Anna says:

You need to check the terms and conditions of your booking. Unless BA cancels the flight you may be limited as to what you can claim back at this stage. As you booked via Expedia it is down to them to deal with this for you. You may have to claim via your travel insurance if you are unable to travel due to FCO advice.

    • Rob says:

Has to be done by Expedia, they have the contract with BA.
