British Airways will refund ALL flights to 31st May for a voucher – but should you say no?

Finally ….. British Airways has seen the light and is now allowing you to cancel ALL flights up to 31st May, in return for a travel voucher.

However …. I am not convinced you should accept.

Let me explain.

Here is the British Airways ‘Book With Confidence’ website.

British Airways BA 777X 777 9X

These are the new rules:

If you are travelling between 14th March and 31st May, you can refund your flight for a British Airways e-voucher irrespective of when you booked.  No refunds are on offer for flights beyond 31st May.

If you are travelling between 1st June and 31st December 2020, you can refund your flight for a British Airways e-voucher if you booked between 3rd March and 31st May

The voucher is valid for 12 months from the date of your original flight

The voucher can be used on any route, not necessarily the one you originally booked

This applies to both British Airways marketed flights and BA Holidays bookings, although Comair and SUN-AIR are exempt

You cannot claim if you have already started your journey

Flight cancellations can be made until the close of check-in, whilst BA Holidays bookings must be cancelled within 48 hours of departure

Anyone who has already cancelled their booking and lost money cannot retrospectively request a voucher

You can also change your flight dates without any change fees, although you have to pay the fare difference.

The small print on how the voucher works is on the ‘Book With Confidence’ website.

British Airways Book With Confidence

But … but … but … perhaps you should wait?

I know this sounds contrarian.  Many of you have been on tenterhooks waiting for a decision like this to allow you to cancel your trip.

And yet ….

The EU has agreed the terms of a deal to allow airlines to cancel flights without losing their slots.

Next week, British Airways is likely cut anything from 25% to 100% of its scheduled flights – probably around 50% given what Lufthansa is doing.   If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a full refund IN CASH.  No messing around with e-vouchers.

By taking the refund now, you are also giving up your right to potential EC261 compensation if you were due to travel within 14 days of the cancellation being made.

Unless you are travelling in the next 4-5 days, you might want to think about waiting in case you end up missing out on a full cash refund.

Of course, there is also a risk that British Airways withdraws this offer and you can no longer refund your ticket at all.

It’s up to you.

So that has stitched me up then. I bought my flights to Miami next month, with the avios boost redemption last nov, and used a 2 4 1 companion voucher. I paid 1400 or something in taxes for business class and premium so now have to use the voucher soon and wont have the bonus of the avios redemption. What can I do Rob? Also we booked american airlines from MIA to Cancun, and then interjet back to MIA, with a hotel from hotels.com. Argh

    • Sean says:

you can always cancel an avios booking under the normal rules with everything back bar £35 p.p fee so no need to get a voucher.

      • Anna says:

How many times has this been asked this now?! People need to start reading the articles and comments, not to mention the Ts and Cs of their own bookings!

        • Luscious says:

People arent so clever and wise as you

        • Aston100 says:

The lack of proper forums and the search facilities they bring are the main reason questions get repeated.

          • Mikeact says:

You meansome people cant be bothered to read or understand the cancellation or change procedures of a purchased or Avios ticket ? Ridiculous.

          • Iain says:

110% agree. HFP needs to evolve…

          • Rob says:

In hand, i have quotes on my desk from various web design groups for a full overhaul. £25,000 to £40,000, before anyone asks.

          • BJ says:

I think many would still ask anyway. I also think most readers like HFP the way it is. Rob asks for feedback and ideas sometimes, usually around the new year, and judging by past comment there has been little demand for big changes.

          • jc says:

@Rob no reason whatsoever to overhaul the whole website for those improvements to be made. If for argument’s sake you did want to make the changes mentioned above, you’d need a new plugin or two, for a fraction of that price.

          • Rui N. says:

@Aston100 if you think questions on foruns don’t get repeated 100 times you Haven’t been around a lot of foruns… also, search functions on foruns usually suck, much more effective to use google with the “site:xxx” function

          • Lady London says:

+1 a lot of the questions that have been asked here andanswered many times over in several places across multiple days now, seem to be being asked by people who aren’t showing signs of having actually made an effort to look at previously asked questions and answers. Also the answers they need will mostly be pretty plain in their own terms and conditions they received when they made their booking. Or if they check the website or their travel provider and look for any emails from their provider.

I’ve noticed a group of regulars on here helping out when newbies ask frequently already asked questions. But it would be better to use those people’s expertise and voluntarily given time to help those with complicated problems. Like the guy stuck in Peru yesterday that could be left with Iberia not flying him home and no means of support in that country.

Everyone will help you if it’s clear you have tried yourself first. We don’t want compassion fatigue of our best posters. Jus’ sayin.

          • Lady London says:

            +1 @Rui N.

          • Polly says:

Only thing l would appreciate is a notification of a reply to a comment. Useful feature, that.

LL, where is Julian in all this? Not a peep from him lately….

          • Lady London says:

I think Julian may have been a sensitive soul who may have found it a bit rambunctious here sometimes.

I was just about getting sick of virtue signalling and now we have a bit of pity signalling. We really are a full grown blog community now aren’t we. Luckily I know relevant posters won’t read that far back. But I will be prepared to defend my comment if necessary.

Has Callum given us the virilogist’s view yet?

      • Luscious says:

Thanks, I wanted to try and see if they were waiving that fee.

  • Mart says:

Our trip has gone due to Madrid being out of bounds .
We have flights with iberia(cash) and avios to Rio from Madrid a few days later.
Insurance want cancellation notices ,rang and rang either not getting through or phone put down anyone any ideas?

    • Anna says:

Has it been cancelled? This is rather crucial when it comes to determining what you are entitled to.

      • Mart says:

Not cancelled but fco advise only essential travel to Madrid ,rang insurance and they said ok to claim but want cancellation evidence

  • Clive says:

Insane sale on LX out of CDG in Business. Global prices under £1000 even to Australia

    • Rob says:

      14 days quarantine required.

      • Clive says:

Rob it’s a Global sale and currently you are able to push tickets out so why not take advantage? Dubai is £799 and SE Asia under £900

        • Rob says:

Because people will not think it through. These are essentially non refundable tickets because the repricing after the free change will be massive.

          • Andy says:

Yes…God knows why all the morons on FT are buying them given all the uncertainty.

          • Lady London says:

Could be worth it for original routing credit if *A key ones go in for that. Have to use any rapidly though as it will only be a respectable interval before devaluations

    • Lady London says:

Interestingly, BA seems to be providing the SIN-SYD-SIN flights on those itineraries. When sold by and ticketed by Lufthansa or Swiss, apparently, rather than an OTA? I looked at it quickly, might have even wrong, but haven’t seen BA legs on tickets sold by those in quite a while

  • Mikeact says:

We’re currently looking to cut short our US trip and just get back home anyway possible. It’s just that, what’s the point? Restaurants are closed, attractions are closing fast, our Holiday Inn has had to close the restaurant on instructions from HQ. And looking on TV tonight…showing the MASSIVE queues of arrivals into Chicago O’Hare, all having to be tested and having to answer written questions and then having a one on one….total nightmare.
Feels like living in a real life horror movie.

    • Just my tuppence says:

Oh no. I hear you. But why cancel. Take a deep breath, chill, relax. Enjoy the close company of your loved one and make the most of the lovely climate, nature etc etc etc. Switch off your phone get in the zone. You’ll be returning to a nightmare here so please, relax and enjoy your well deserved trip!

      • DF says:

        Great advice
        We are in San Francisco

        • BJ says:

Great time to hire a car and head into the rural north…Lassen and then up to Shasta if you have the time and never been before.

          • Novice says:

Great time to be a writer.

The book is gonna write itself with all this world turning into a dystopian nightmare.

    • Jeff says:

Based on the pictures of what US airports look like at the moment, you don’t want to be anyone near one at the moment

  • Mark says:

I had planned to go to Bulgaria at the end of the month and booked in Feb as the route gets good tier points (160 return in club) but most likely not going and thus I am entitled to receive the voucher. Does anyone know, that as I paid cash and avios, if I get the Avios back?

  • Simon G says:

Any news on BA extending 2-4-1 vouchers? I have a trip planned for Easter booked a year ago with a voucher that is due to expire on 2nd May. I know I can cancel (although suspect BA will first) and get the Avios and voucher back, but the chance of using the voucher in the next 6 weeks are pretty slim!

    • Sue says:

      Hi Simon
I’m in the same boat, although my 2-4-1 runs out during my trip! I tried to call BA just now (gold line) and the message is done not call unless you are due to within 72 hours. Use the website’. I have scoured the website – it says if you have booked through Avios claim here, but nothing about whether you will get your 2-4-1 extended. At a loss as to what to do now!

      • AJA says:

Simon and Sue wait until 36 hours before your trips to cancel as BA will probably cancel your flights in the meantime. But if not you can cancel up to 24 hours before departure and get everything back for a fee of £35 per passenger.

If you do cancel you should do it over the phone and ask for an extension to the 2-4-1 voucher. Anecdotal evidence is that extensions are given. It’s not an official policy.

Also it seems the £35 fee per passenger is noe being refunded as an e-voucher as well.

  • Patrycja says:

FCO is now advising against all but essential travel to Peru as well.

  • Pee Lee says:

    Latest from QANTAS

From today, we are giving customers who hold tickets for domestic and international travel the ability to cancel their booking and retain the value as travel credit. The offer is available until 31 March for travel booked up to 31 May 2020 and applies to all Qantas and QantasLink services.”
