  The Etihad deal is also quite clever as they can sell the middle seat in a row of three twice (to the window and aisle passengers), raking in £100 for that empty seat!

  You’re forgetting the 5000 mile bonus you get when converting 60000 Bonvoy points to miles. So you get 30000 miles for $500 which is 1.29p per Avios/mile. Still not great value, but it could skew the decision in certain circumstances.

  Re; the Etihad deal. Do the crew somehow make it clear to other passengers that the ‘spare’ seats are taken? If not couldn’t it lead to an awkward situation where someone sees you in an empty row of four (who’s maybe sitting in a full row of four) and tries to move to one of the spare seats? I know you could explain the situation, but others may also think they’re free during the flight. Might just be a hassle and a bit awkward having to (perhaps regularly) explain to people they’re all your seats.

    For short haul cheapskates, the same is possible on EasyJet by booking for Mr Cello Seat. Me + 1 used to for a pseudo euro-business experience on EasyJet last year … bargain at EUR25 for our flight. Taxes are payable.

      Mate of mine used to do this on BA for £2, since they only charge the base fare and a lot of BA Y shorthauls have a £2 base fare. Problem was that very few BA call centre people know how to link the seat to yours, so on the day your 2nd seat is at the other end of the plane to your seat.

  OT – I’m going to try and call BA to book reward tickets at midnight sat. Given it’s the weekend, any recommendations on the best BA office to call? And how early do people normally call to get through to agent, pass security etc?

    USA is best bet, as they will be open. Japan office opens at midnight, so may be too late. This week I called the office at 23:45, got through the first operator to be redirected to the right office. Was on hold for right up until midnight, and ended up just being quick with the mouse and booking them on ba.com myself.

    It’s been a while but last time I tried the US office they refused to help me and was told to call the UK office in the morning. I think it may have been the agent but I had been holding for too long to ring back!

      Quite a lot of the foreign numbers actually go through to BA in the UK. I’ve had that same response from a US-based operator when I landed one though.
