  OT: probably a stupid question but want to be sure – AMEX Gold travel insurance

  Scenario: I am going to pay for my train tickets and my flights with my AMEX gold. I have booked a train at 10:00 which will get me to Paddington by 12:00 then, I’ll get another train to Heathrow and arrive at the airport around 2h before my flight. My train to Paddington had been cancelled due to signalling fault (as well as other trains) and I’ve missed my flight. Does the insurance cover the price of a new ticket?

  Or alternatively, let’s say that I’ve booked two separate advanced tickets – one from Oxford to London and then another separate one to Southampton … The first train breaks down & I have to get another one, missing my second one – does AMEX gold insurance covers this too?

  Luckily, neither of those scenarios happened to me but they did nearly happen to me during last few weeks …

    I’m pretty sure AMEX Gold doesn’t have any travel insurance but may be wrong.

      Thanks for your answers guys.

      Does that mean that platinum covers the other stuff too? Alternatively, does any other credit card covers cases mentioned in my scenarios?

        you’d have to read the T&Cs on Amex Plat insurance – easy to google – but most people say they are perfectly reasonable/ generous in terms of sorting you out on flights, I just don’t know about trains

        whereas – Section 75 (Credit cards only) provides excellent free protection provided you paid over £100 on a *credit* card / *not* charge card (ie a £100+ transaction, it could cover several segments under £100 & that would be OK but the payment must be over £100 – not that it all has to be on the credit card but let’s not get confusing as most people would just pay everything on 1 card). You won’t get compo but you should be sorted out with nothing further to pay in terms of your journey and any consequential losses are also covered. To understand it more intuitively, realise that the credit card is jointly & severally liable for fulfilling your travel contract with the airline/ train co/ etc etc.

    If you miss your train because another train was delayed, you’re allowed to take the next available one (with the same operator and only if you left enough time for the connection) for free.

  We have done over 120 cruises. With kids and without them over the past 25 years.
  Today we travel with Seabourn, small premium…let’s call it business class. This and lines like Silversea are not for kids. They actively discourage them by not having kiddie themed ‘toys’ or activities.

  When we took our kids there were a number of options.

  P&O expect a very British experience that we tended to avoid.

  RCCL big ships that if you have the right cruising attitude towards holidaying may be a good option. Lots of entertainment for adults and children. Mix of Brits and Americans maybe Scandis/Europeans if starting in the Med (not if from Southampton will be Brits)
  PRINCESS big ships and very similar profile to RCCL
  DISNEY you’ll either love it or get Mickie’d out.
  NCL have never travelled with these guys so no experience
  CARNIVAL tend to be party ships that depending on venue can be very hispanic. Avoid
  COSTA Had one and hated it. Too many languages!
  CELEBRITY More upscale than RCCL so may give a better adult holiday. Would be my choice if taking my grandkids

  Hopefully something here is of interest although a lot will also depend on port of departure and itinerary.
