Tesco Bank suspends applications for its Avios-earning current account

Since 2014, when Tesco launched its current account, it has been possible to earn Avios or Virgin Flying Club miles with your day-to-day DEBIT card banking.

Until this week.

Tesco has suspended new applications for its current accountTake a look on its website here.

It isn’t clear if this is permanent or not.

The website simply says:

“Sorry, we’re not accepting new current account applications at the moment, but please pop back in the new year for an update on this.

If you’re an existing customer you can continue to use your account as normal.”

Tesco has done this before, but for different reasons.  Earlier suspensions were due to the account being overrun with applications due to an exceptionally generous interest rate.  Given how far that rate has been cut in recent years, this certainly is not the case now.

Tesco let you earn Avios with your current Account DEBIT card

If you had this account, you were earning Clubcard points on all of your debit card transactions:

1 point per £1 spent in Tesco (2.4 Avios per £1 / 2.5 Virgin miles per £1)

1 point per £8 spent elsewhere (0.3 Avios per £1 / 0.31 Virgin miles per £1)

The ‘1 point per £1’ spent in Tesco was a very generous benefit.  If you were spending £100 per week in Tesco, which includes Tesco Fuel, you would earn 12,480 Avios or 13,000 Virgin Flying Club miles per year if you put all of this spending onto your debit card.  That was on top of the base Clubcard points you would receive irrespective of how you pay.  This was a pretty attractive deal.

Even the ‘1 point per £8 spent elsewhere’ was attractive.   Whilst you would be better off in most circumstances using a loyalty credit card instead, it was not always possible to avoid using a debit card.

There was ‘small print’ attached to the ‘1 Clubcard point per £8 spent on the debit card’.  All payments to ‘banks and financial institutions’ were exempt.  This means that you could not pay your mortgage, pay off a credit card bill or pay money into a savings account.

It DID work with payments to the Inland Revenue.  With Curve now imposing fees on HMRC payments and Capital On Tap switching to a credit card from a debit card, it was one of the few ways of profiting from tax payments.

Is Tesco Bank still in the game or not?

I get a feeling that Tesco is trying to wind down Tesco Bank without making a big song and dance over it.  As Tesco owns its bank outright, winding it down would release a lot of capital.

In September 2019, Lloyds Bank bought Tesco’s mortgage portfolio for £3.8bn.  Not only does it no longer sell mortgages, it has sold off all the ones it had already generated.

It quietly started cutting the interest rates on its savings accounts.  These had been aggressive – I have two myself – because Tesco wanted the funding to support its mortgage lending.  Now that it isn’t making any new mortgage lending, it doesn’t have much use for deposits.  The top offering is currently 1.2% vs 1.35% at Marcus.

The credit card arm has also had a lobotomy.  The Premium card was closed, as were many variants of the standard credit card.  It is a long time since there was an incentive to sign up to their credit cards, which are another way of earning Avios and Virgin Flying Club miles, albeit at a very low rate.

I’ll keep an eye out and let you know if the current account reappears, as long as it still earns Clubcard points.

Until Curve goes bankrupt, there are plenty of better debit card earning options than Tesco…

    • Froggee says:

Except Curve is capped and will necessitate a fee for HMRC very soon.

    • Ashish says:

      Kindly give us some information?
      Thanks

      • Rob says:

Obvious option is loading up a Revolut from a credit card – paying the cash out via the debit card does at least make it a genuine transaction vs paying it back into your bank account.

        • ash says:

but were is the Curve Used?

          • Lady London says:

Curve is classed as a debit card.

If you haven’t had time to look at the very extensive history of helpful and expansively helpful comments on here Ash / Ashish I’d suggest that even just googling for the actual articles there have been on the site in past year or two will give you all the information.

Opportunities change continuously. For example best Curve advantages will take a dent from late January unless you pay monthly charge for Metal level of Curve.

However if you read the articles and understand them and as many of the comments as you have time for then you will learn enough to be able to spot and use future opportunities for yourself as they develop.

          • Ashish says:

            I understand.

Curve + Credit no Curve + Debit

            Thank you

        • Scott says:

Any idea if Virgin treat this as cash advance or as purchase?

    • Ash says:

      Is this with HSBC?

O/T new promo from Tesco home and buildings insurance runs till 28/2 use code HOM20.
    ***

No idea how many points you get

    • Spurs Debs says:

Sorry 2500! That’s why I don’t post much in the evening I’m hopeless lol

    • Spurs Debs says:

If you’re a new Home Insurance customer with a Clubcard, you’ll collect 2,500 Clubcard points when you buy a combined buildings and contents policy direct from us by 28/02/2020. Simply quote HOM20 and your Clubcard number.

      • Shoestring says:

still – that’s 6000 Avios decent discount if you can make it work for you, last time I used them Tesco Home Insurance was quite competitive

£45.45 bonus on top (another 4545 Avios) and I would say your chances of a successful ‘stack’ (ie not getting declined for the £45.45) are about 75% based on my own experience

      • Chas says:

You can potentially get more (depending on the value of your premium) by using Alan Boswell group. I used them for the 1st time in October and earns 10,000 Avios even though I ended up staying with the same insurer. 😎

      • Rob says:

These codes have a habit of not working unless targeted. Not always, admittedly.

      • Genghis says:

Also beware. I’ve posted before about me not getting the points promised. Tesco bizarrely set up a new clubcard account into which the 2.5k points were posted and despite complaints raised, they were not able to combine the accounts. We settled on £125 cash.

        • Spurs Debs says:

I did our current house insurance through site that cannot be named, my cash back was declined even tho I know I did it correctly. None of these schemes seem 100% proof.

  • Annabel says:

Sorry – just upgraded my blue BA card to BAPP over the phone. Does my earning year towards 2-4-1 voucher rest and start again now? This account was originally a BAPP account and was downgraded to blue last year in May 2019 after receiving and using 2-4-1 voucher. Thank you in advance.

    • Newbie A says:

Nop, it carries on, the spend your accumulated is included. I have just done the same a couple of weeks ago and can see the spend count.

  • Federico says:

Noticed it just before Christmas.. I know that Tesco is working on improving the horrible mobile app so it might be just a temporary stop.

Being a Tesco shopper I have now moved the Tesco account to hsbc to get £175. Tesco bank account offer is too weak and no worth keeping

    • Anna says:

I changed my current account last year after 26 years with the same bank (I had 2 accounts, so kept one and moved one to M & S). There doesn’t seem to be much incentive to stay with M & S Bank now I’ve had all the first year’s freebies, however M & S are part of HSBC so would I be eligible for the £175 for changing to “actual” HSBC?

      • William Squires says:

Yepp. And the First Direct ones (when they run them too).

Once for each though, no extras (ever).

        • Anna says:

Thanks William. FD is my main bank though, so no bonuses for me there!

  • Stuart says:

Tesco closed my account for making tax payments on my debit card. I now prefer curve anyway because although I pay £150 a year I can spend up to £1.6m and earn 1.5 virgin miles per £1 of expenditure rather than the poor Clubcard conversion rate to BA

    • Graham says:

Does the Curve £50k annual limit not still apply?

      • jc says:

No, starts lower than that but can be increased over time to £1,400,000 if you have enough varied spend and pass security checks.

    • Steve says:

1.5 FC points- only if you have a credit limit of over £100k on your card, otherwise your FC points will be capped.

    • John says:

Did Tesco close your clubcard account as well? I spend about £2m a year on my Tesco debit card and you’ve got me worried they might do the same to me.

        • Secret Squirrel says:

Has your policy tracked? I got to the final page after pushing the acceptance button & it stated there had been an error but I got an email confirming the policy had Been completed and all set up.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

      @SteveR:
Where did you find that offer as its not stated on the pet insurance home page? Just want to screenshot it in case they try not to credit points.
Got my cat for £3.05 @ month.

      • pablo says:

I can’t find the offer either. Buyer beware, in 2016 the bonus points were only given on Premier and Extra cover.

        • Secret Squirrel says:

The payout is not linked to extra or Premium cover on this occasion. If they don’t give bonus points I’m still happy with payout to avios.

          • Secret Squirrel says:

            OT:
Previous Iberia Avios Groupon offer fiasco, I managed to get a refund yesterday. The only bonus was 2201 Avios they credited me via IB store which was immediately moved out to BAEC.

Tip: Dont touch Groupon Spain ever for avios offers.

On those sites best to search before you log in. Incognito prob good idea as i have impression sometimes it recognises previously used IP address before Iog in.

Offers shown or not shown are defo tuned to who they know you as. Rates can go down if its a merchant you’ve used frequently.

    • Gulz says:

I genuinely have been looking to get my cat insured. I put the TOPPET code in the promo code section and website says its accepted. But there’s no place for me to enter my clubcard number, all the way through to the payments page… any ideas?

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Accepted code and clubcard number for me, I think it was further down the Same page?

        • Gulz says:

Not for me… All I see under ‘About your policy’ section is ‘Cover start date’, ‘Promotional code (optional)’ and ‘Where did you hear about us? (optional)’

          • Shoestring says:

don’t worry, same here for my wife – they can see your clubcard number from the name & address match (as mentioned)

      • Spurs Debs says:

This has happened before, if I’ve remembered correctly Tesco automatically link/know from your address your Clubcard details.

    • William Squires says:

That’s handy, my cat Raffles II could do with a new policy…

    • Anna says:

I asked the other day but can’t remember which thread! – if you cancel the life insurance do they start calling you to ask why/try and persuade you to stay?

      • sloth says:

no, a couple of letters/emails though telling me they miss me. probably cos i didnt give my actual number so dont know if they have tried to call…

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Make sure you call up and cancel rather than cancel your DD. I got stung once for a month’s payment on an insurance policy for not notifying them.

        • Anna says:

I would pay £3 not to have the hassle of telling them!

          • Grant says:

If you are doing the MT – HBSC life insurance via Harry’s fav website then you can email HSBC to cancel your policy. I did it x2 – very easy, no hassling and a prompt reply.

          • Secret Squirrel says:

            @Anna:
I got sent a letter stating terms and I owed them money & would be passed to debt recovery if I didn’t call them.

      • Spurs Debs says:

They offered my counselling on the death of my pet!
No I’m fine thanks just one of those things.

        • Lady London says:

Best laugh I’ve had all day @Spurs Debs ! 🙂

Or, perhaps more coventionally, sorry to hear about your pet.

    • r* says:

Whats the cheapest type of pet to have insured? Is it a minimum term of 12 month or can it be cancelled?

      • Shoestring says:

can be cancelled any time you choose

sounds like 2yr old neutered male moggy who lives indoors in good health + vaccinated etc

    • Nick_C says:

To lose one cat may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like insurance fraud.

      • Shoestring says:

but you can just say I can’t afford the insurance & cancel

or not give a reason & cancel

      • Lady London says:

Not necessarily. Neighbours have warned me a lot of cats get hit on the road in this area. There’s a suspicion that hunters (it’s hunting season now) may also be involved.

I guess that’s why premiums are lower if kept indoors.

  • Martin says:

The Tesco credit cards are still fairly useful for lending – I took one out and they gave me 24 months at 0% with a £10k limit. (A bit over-generous for the bike I was buying, but nice to be able to spread the cost all the same. And the 200 Clubcard points are better than a slap in the face I guess!)

  • Benilyn says:

OT: How much have people been topping up their Rev Olut accounts per week / month? Would 60k / month be aggressive?

    • Secret Squirrel says:

      @Benilyn:
I would suspect that type of loads will get you closed down very quickly, funds frozen etc.

    • Lev441 says:

Be Prepared for your account to be frozen for days at a time if you are topping up large balances with only online chat as a form of getting it unblocked…

      • Benilyn says:

Fair enough, I think you are right, especially as I use the account for actual holiday spending and its virtual/disposable cards, I would actually miss having it.

        • Lady London says:

Last night (after I got past the robot) Revolut agent insisted on another 5 or so bits of personal information in addition to the 4 or so bits of info I’d already had to enter into their app in order to get through. Then wanted a selfie with ID that they’d already had.

The account has only had the initial £10 loaded and no transactions. I intended to do a small first transaction. I got it to set up a EUR direct debit as a start as Starling etc don’t seem to provide this. Then found the app wanted a PIN they’d never sent me.

Told the agent at 1am I am not in a position to do selfie. Phone isn’t.that good and neither am I at that time. I’ve entered 4 pieces of info into the app that uniquely identify me yet he’s claiming I am anonymous so can’t help.

Told them to close the account as never used and refund my £10. As I am not prepared to use a card that would clearly leave me stranded whilst travelling without access to my money just because I cannot guarantee always to be able to give them a selfie.

Guess what they want a selfie to close it. When I’ve already given them identifying info that matches account details so it can only be me. Told them they can either refund my £10 to where it came from if they think I’m not me or post it to my home address if they’re that worried. Oh no they need a selfie to even close the account which hasn’t been used. I can’t remember if I gave them one previously or not – quite possibly not.

Eventually extracted the UK official address for Revolut off the agent. Its in Westferry Circus Canary Wharf. As it happens I’m down there in a couple of weeks – perhaps I can visit in person and demand my money back. Probably I’ll just send them a signed-for letter and contact the FOS soon after.

Thank heavens I found out before Revolut stranded me somewhere without access to any money I put with them.

Does anyone know if any of the other fintechs will do.a direct debit that can only be taken in EUR? The company refuses to debit in GBP.

          • Harry T says:

            @Lady London
Sorry to hear that – appalling customer service! Luckily I’ve not had anything to do with Revolut CS.

          • Harry T says:

            @Lady London
Monese will let you open a free euro account in addition to a GBP account. I haven’t tried setting up a DD but it should work.

Let me know if you need a Monese referral code, though I reckon it’s best if you can use Rob’s (assuming he’s has one).

          • Secret Squirrel says:

Maybe they will take your piccy you when you go in and see them in person to close your account. Make sure your all glanced up that day! 😂
I’ve had to take a selfie video for other prepaid card accounts in the past, but frightening feeling like a convict holding my passport next to my face on camera.

          • Lady London says:

Ta Harry T I had discounted Monese and all the free Monet they were handing out because they also looked a bit onerous to sign up with. I will take another look at them.

Its a pity about Revolut being so unreasonable and Starling looked very OK. Would be my second choice but need to sort out being direct debited in EUR first. So I guess it’s a harder look at Monese then.

Based on this experience I would feel it risky to go completely digital on all my banking. But governments seem to want to eliminate cash. So perhaps it will all end up the same in the end.

      • Lee says:

Be very careful. I had my account blocked after uploading £9k onto it from a cc. Uploaded multiple pieces of info… wage slips, id, selfies, everything they asked for. This took the course of two weeks as they took days to respond each time. In the end they still wouldn’t let me withdraw / transfer the money to a bank account even though I proved it was my money. They did say i could continue to use the card for purchases. I managed to get the £9k out by withdrawing £500 a day via curve card as a purchase. I had spent about £50k on the card when this happened. They also wouldn’t let me close the account.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Yes.

Proof of income and will it be spent on genuine transactions and not just cycled back into your account / credit card paid off

    • The Urbanite says:

Don’t overdo it – Revolut do shut people down, specifically stating they do not wish to be used to game other financial firms. I’ve protected my account by keeping usage right down.
