Get a 100% bonus buying Hilton hotel points, and how to get yourself a Hilton Honors status match

I’m pleased to say that Hilton is sponsoring Head for Points for the next four weeks.  This is to promote the new Hilton Winter Sale, which launches today.

You can find full details of the sale here.  It covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa for weekend stays until 31st August 2020.  We will look at it in more detail later this week.

You will see the Hilton logo popping up in different positions across HfP, on desktop, on mobile and in our daily emails.  We will also be running a few articles on Hilton Honors over the next four weeks for the benefits of readers who are not fully aware of what it has to offer.

To kick off, I wanted to draw your attention to the latest ‘buy points’ offer which has just launched, as well as reminding you about the generous Hilton Honors status match programme.

Get a 100% bonus when you buy Hilton Honors points

Hilton Honors has launched another promotion offering a 100% bonus when you purchase 10,000+ points.

The Hilton ‘buy points’ page is here.

Regular readers of Head for Points will know that I tend to value Hilton points at 0.33p each.  You are paying 0.40p (0.5 cents) here so the maths in general doesn’t work.

HOWEVER ….. there ARE real bargains to be had at peak periods.  Conrad Maldives at 95,000 points per night, the new Waldorf Astoria Maldives at 120,000 points, the ‘all suite’ Conrad New York Downtown or Conrad New York Midtown at 95,000 points etc are places where you will usually save a lot of money by buying points instead of paying cash.  This is especially true if you have Hilton status and can get ‘5 nights for the points of 4’ on a longer stay.

(If you don’t have Hilton status, look at the status match offer we discuss below!)

If you are just buying a handful of points to top off your account, the price per point doesn’t matter anyway.  If you a few thousand short of a redemption then this is a decent opportunity to buy them.

The annual cap has been doubled for this offer.  You can buy up to 320,000 points (160,000 + 100%) for $1,600.

You can buy points via this link.  The offer ends on 26th November.

How to get a Hilton Honors status match

If you have considered switching your hotel stays to Hilton but don’t want to go ‘cold turkey’ because you have status with your main chain, Hilton has a solution.

Via this link, you can match your existing status with another hotel loyalty programme into Hilton Honors.  You must be at least ‘mid tier’ although Hilton will define at its discretion what counts from each particular scheme.

You can definitely match from the following programmes:

  • Best Western Rewards
  • Choice Privileges
  • IHG Rewards Club
  • Le Club AccorHotels
  • Marriott Bonvoy
  • Radisson Rewards
  • World of Hyatt
  • Wyndham Rewards

It is not clear if other schemes are still accepted.  Hilton recently changed the terms and conditions to say:

“Only elite statuses from another hotel loyalty program that are listed in the status dropdown menu are eligible for status matching.”

….. but the dropdown menu still includes an ‘Other’ option!

The match rules are simple:

You will receive Hilton Honors Gold status for 90 days from the date of acceptance (usually 4-5 days after you email your request)

To keep Gold until March 2021, you need to complete 10 nights (cash, not reward) within 90 days

To be upgraded to Diamond until March 2021, you need to complete 18 nights (cash, not reward) within 90 days

Note that, as well as having status in another programme, you must also have evidence of a stay within the last 12 months with that programme.  If, for example, you have IHG Rewards Club Platinum status via the IHG Rewards Club Premium Mastercard, you would also need to show evidence of an IHG stay in order to be matched.

How do you get a Hilton Honors status match?

Is a Hilton Honors status match worth doing?

Potentially, yes.

Hilton Gold is generally seen as the best mid-tier hotel status because it gets you free breakfast.  You don’t get free breakfast with IHG Rewards Club even if you are a top tier Spire Elite member!

Hilton Diamond comes with guaranteed lounge access, where the hotel has a lounge.  Again, good luck with that as an IHG elite member.

Timing is key, of course.

Once you are accepted, you get the benefits of Gold status for 90 days.  This could save you a LOT of money on breakfast if you are heading to a Hilton property this Winter.

If you are planning to do the full 10 or 18 nights (note it is nights, not stays) in order to retain status until March 2021, you also need to be confident that you can squeeze them in.

You might want to do the maths on a mattress run – booking a local hotel, checking in and immediately leaving without telling anyone – to get the extra nights you need.

Would you get enough value by March 2021 to justify spending £200-£300 on mattress run nights?  There might be opportunities over the cheap Christmas and New Year period to sneak in a few nights at local hotels very cheaply, and the cost would be partly offset by the current ‘double base points’ promotion.

You can apply for your Hilton Honors status match here.

We will be covering Hilton Honors in more depth over the next couple of weeks as part of Hilton’s site sponsorship.

I applied twice for Hilton status match last year, both times I was completely ignored, not so much as a confirmation email. Meant to chase it but didn’t get around to it. Frustrating, as I really fancy moving away from IHG.

    • Andrew says:

Same. I was ignored. Do they status match IHG Spire to Diamond?

      • BJ says:

Yes, normally they would but as other Andrew says there is no longer immediate Diamond you have to earn it. Did you guys meet and attach proof of stay requirements with scheme you were matching from? If not, that is probably why you were ignored.

  • Andrew says:

You can’t just apply and be upgraded to Diamond. You apply, then stay the required number of nights (18) within the 90 days and THEN you get upgraded to Diamond. So if you feel you’ve been ignored this is probably why.

  • TripRep says:

Rob – nice to see Hilton sponsoring, do you have a good contact for customer services, still chasing up an issue from my stay at DT Majestic in Harrogate last week. As I said at the time with the correct tweaks the place could be a terrific property, possibly the best DT in the UK.

    • Rob says:

      Unfortunately not.

      • TripRep says:

Have to say I’m quite surprised by this, it would be a great PR opportunity and a greater presence with engaging with HFPers would compliment their sponsorship.

    • paulm says:

a good option is to go on flyertalk and PM the HonorsRepresentative on there (William) Guy is ex Starwood and is very good at helping.

  • TripRep says:

I’ve spent over £10k on Hilton Visa since April, how do I find out when my Gold status is valid until, my status page still says I need more stays to retain Gold in 2020.

    • Anna says:

Mine says the same, but I have gold status from Amex Plat until March 2020 (CS will confirm date if you contact them). However I assume that having spent over £10k on the Visa card, my gold status will automatically be renewed anyway.

    • BJ says:

Rest of current year (ending 31 March) and all of next. Often something weird going on with Hilton status, stays etc so I started keeping my own spreadsheet. I love Hilton Honors except their CS. Even as Diamond it is the worst of any hotel scheme IME, even Accor and that’s saying something. . I just be patient and keep emailing them until a competent CSA owns and responds to my concerns.

    • Jason says:

Tripit I have found if you direct message them off twitter they are excellent

      • BJ says:

That has been reported a few times. I don’t use twitter but I think I’m going to have to as it is increasingly the best way to contact CS at a whole range of places.

    • Ian says:

I had this question last year. Your account pages will show the nights you require to retain Gold but when they come to reassess your status at the end of the year they will know you have the credit card and continue your Gold status.

    • sunguy says:

Call Barclays CS – once you get through to an agent who is competent and helpful (not all of them are!) – they can tell you if the notification has been sent through to HHonors….

On another note – Rob, have you heard anything more on the next Hilton UK Credit Card yet ?

    • RussellH says:

Last year I had to nag Barclaycard CS a few times, quoting monthly spends etc. before I got the official notification.
This year the e-mail from Hilton turned up automagically on 8 November, presumably following generation of my bill on 21 October.
It still says 31 March 2020 on the website, but that also mentions getting Gold via stays.
Obviously I have a printout of the e-mail confirmation as well as a PDF.

      • Lyn says:

What a lovely new word, RussellH – automagically. Well, new to me anyway, Thank you, it seems like the perfect word to describe some situations.

  • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Good to see clear channels of communication between Hilton and HfP. Can you obtain a current statement on a potential UK branded credit card?

    • marcw says:

      No new credit card.

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Can your source enlighten me as to why?

        • marcw says:

If it hasn’t been launched yet, means they are not REALLY interested in having one. I’m not optimistic, let’s put it that way.

Emirates, United, American Airlines, Etihad, Hilton, Marriott… don’t seem to push for a new credit card. Only Lufthansa Miles & More has done it.

          • Rob says:

And the Lufty structure is so complex most people don’t want it.

Virgin Money and VA seem happy BUT they are running a genuine open-book partnership.

          • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Of those listed most are airlines with very niche presence in the UK. Hilton have 159 hotels throughout the UK with more opening all the time. That presents them with a very different value proposition to, for example, United Airlines.

Marriott/SPG have a card. IHG the same. It’s not that the optics don’t work although like yourself I’m not overly optimistic but that isn’t to say it is never going to happen. It just might be priority number 23 or 223.

Clutching at straws here, but if Hilton were on the fence perhaps they would be interested in a targeted HfP exclusive? Perhaps a two week application window for the existing card to gauge demand and generate revenue for HfP. A lot would depend upon their contract with the Issuer but to paraphrase Monty Python, the old card is not dead yet.

          • Rob says:

I have learnt something today which makes me think that a new Hilton UK is now less likely. More news in the New Year 🙂

        • John says:

Because they don’t want to have one.

      • BrianW says:

Yawn marcw, finger in the air comment as usual 🤦🏼‍♂️

    • BJ says:

Would be great if the clear channels would provide some clear answers to some clear and frequent questions 🙂

  • Brighton Belle says:

IHG rewards card gets all my spending. There’s no Hilton branded card I can apply for. Until Hilton give us a new card in the UK they won’t get my stays.

    • BJ says:

Perhaps the reason they are sponsoring HFP for a month is because the new card is finally coming and they want a highly focussed launch event.

      • Rob says:

        No. Honestly.

        • Andrew L says:

Maybe they have decided to keep the relationship with Barclays and start accepting applications again. I hope so because i’m very happy with mine. It’s an easy way to keep my Gold status for free! I just make sure I put at least £10,000 a year on the card. For everything over that it’s IHG Rewards credit card.

      • Lady London says:

Hum. What could Hilton be plotting that’s not à tàkeover, and not a new card.

Off the wall, perhaps a finance tie up with Amazon, or UK Hilton being reorganised within Hilton?

    • sunguy says:

The problem is that – they dont really want more status members that are not earned the hard way….there are already deals with AMEX and if you want status, you can do the status match to gold and diamond challenge.

Why give away free status for something you do not make much revenue on and as there is a status match program in place that is extremely generous to lure folks from staying with other hotel groups?

Unfortunately, this is the predicament we are in – I dont like it any more than you or anyone else.

If it were me, Id love to see the US creditcard launched in the UK – but thats never going to happen….would easily endup with daimond and several free stays…..

      • Doug M says:

“Why give away free status for something you do not make much revenue on ”
Because at most hotel most of the status benefits that come with a credit card are what a reasonable hotel would provide in the rate anyway. Hamptons have breakfast, as do some other brands. Charging for Wi-Fi is beyond a joke, so what benefits does the CC available status provide? I can live without the bottled water and bag of trail mix. Most people paying for top end hotels are paying for the benefits, and I’d guess, and that’s all it is that the HfP readers that comment and know every benefit and entitlement from memory are a tiny minority. Someone like my boss, a proper high spender would barely be aware of the rate paid, he’ll just charge anything and everything he wants, he wouldn’t care about a status.

  • Glenn says:

Does the 100% bonus points deal apply if using Virgin air miles or Amex reward points for the purchase?

  • Freddy says:

I think the comments have swayed me not to move any stays to Hilton 🙂
