It’s back – earn 18,000 Avios with a subscription to The Economist

British Airways and The Economist have brought back their special offer for taking out a subscription.  As you can see at this link, you can earn up to 18,000 Avios with a new one-year subscription.

Here are the two options on offer if you are a UK resident:

Print only or digital only:  £179 with 15,000 Avios (1.19p per Avios)

Print and digital:  £215 with 18,000 Avios (1.19p per Avios)

Subscribing to The Economist could make sense just for the Avios bonus even if you have little intention of reading it in detail, although there are occasional opportunities to buy points for nearer 1p each.

There are even better deals when looking at other countries.  A digital only subscription for someone with a Canadian address snags you 15,000 Avios at 0.78p per point (C$199 / £116). Pricing in the Eurozone is unfortunately poorer than in the UK, with 1.6p per Avios on digital-only subscriptions in Belgium, France and Germany.

As always, if you are self-employed you may be happy writing off the subscription cost as a business expense which would sharply reduce your price per Avios even further.

This offer runs until 31st January.

  • AUH says:

O/T: I am flying to AUH at the end of the month in First. This is the 4th time only in this year that I tried to book the Elemis 15 min treatment for F pax, but was told that it is completely booked out for that day. I just can’t imagine so many F passengers waiting for the -T28 day to arrive and to immediately book the Spa.

Does anyone here have similar experience? I am not desperate about the 15 min treatment, but at this point, I genuinely wonder if BA is playing tricks 🙂

    • Londoner says:

I have managed to get a booking on my last 4 F trips.
The secret is to call YouFirst at T-29 (not 28) and make the booking. I’ve had all slots available when I’ve done so.

      • Anna says:

+1, I accidentally called at T-29 (I can’t count) and had no problem booking 2 slots.

  • Phil says:

I currently have a subscription to the Economist obtained via this route. Since it says “new subscriptions” I suppose I will have to use my partner’s details to take advantage of this again?

    • Mr. AC says:

Worked for me again with a different address (one was delivered to work, one to my home). Old subscription expired by the time I took out the new one. YMMV.

      • Arcadio says:

I would appreciate any advice how to take advantage of this Economist offer if I would like to use it as business expense but I already registered my company for subscription in the past. I guess even different address would not work for company name as a ‘new subscriber’. Many thanks.

        • Shoestring says:

Using the company name as the subscriber doesn’t legitimise it as a business expense, so just use your own name this time

        • EwanG says:

You don’t have to be a ‘new (never subscribed before) subscriber’. If there is a break since your last and this new sub, that works. You would not get the points for renewing an existing sub.

  • BJ says:

O/T: amex offer at Post Office is back this year. Not as generous as previous offers but still something – 250 MR points on both my MR cards, nothing on other card variants.

    • Shoestring says:

but no spend requirement, enough to get a 1p stamp

    • Alan says:

Nothing on my Plat although did get 50 off 250 Hilton on main and AC 👍

    • Nate1309 says:

not on any of my cards or the wife’s

    • William Kerr says:

BJ is that effective now with the PO ? till when ? and no min spend ? have an Amex clear and blue centre MR card so looks good … just on one use yes – non repeatable ?

  • TokyoFan says:

OT: Have BA and Iberia pulled out of e-rewards? Both BAEC and Iberia avios awards are now showing as ‘out of stock’. I’ll be very upset if they are – that was 48k/year I got from e-rewards (60k before avios got pulled!). 🙁

  • Pistol says:

There’s 13% sales tax in Canada added to the bill and so it’s actually 88p per point

    • MattB says:

Aren’t there any 0% sales tax locations you could base yourself in for this?

      • Mike says:

Any suggestions for a 0% sales tax Canada location – as 0.78 a point is a great price

        • Paul Pogba says:

I don’t think Alberta has sales tax.

        • Paul Pogba says:

I’ve just checked, there are two elements to sales tax in Canada, federal (5%) that can’t be escaped and then a provincial. Albertas provincial is 0% but you’ll still have to pay the federal 5%.

  • Pistol says:

    Who won the Monese competition???

    • xcalx says:

Not one comment in any of the blogs that ran the comp from a winner. Ungrateful winners or no winners. Rob said Monese will not tell him who won.

      • Shoestring says:

if any competition *entrant* wants to know, they are legally entitled to ask Monese, who *must* provide the winner’s details (it’s standard competition law)

but nobody writing these tiresome/ repetitive posts can be bothered to spend a minute doing that

      • Rob says:

Two people have publicly said they won – one on Flyertalk, one on a private BA WhatsApp group. One of these two people categorically was not the HFP winner, not sure about the 2nd. No sign on social media anywhere from the other four winners.

    • ChrisBCN says:

Ask Monese if you really want to know!

      • Rob says:

Monese won’t tell us. If you entered you have a legal right to request the name of the winner from Monese.

  • The Original David says:

Your headline says 1,800 Avios for the Economist offer, which doesn’t sound quite so interesting…

  • The Original Nick says:

I don’t have the PO offer but a Hilton offer has appeared and an Accor offer has appeared.

    • BJ says:

Had the Hilton offer last week. What’s the accor offer?

      • Steve-B says:

Spend £350 get £50 back. Limited hotels participating – UK, Switzerland, Netherlands, Germany, France only.

        • BJ says:

Thanks, don’t see me using that anyway, I usually just stay at cheap ibis hotels for a single night if there are no better options.

          • Crafty says:

It’s only Accor “luxury” hotels (MGallery, Sofitel) so not very widely applicable.

    • Andrew says:

What’s the Hilton Offer? I could do with a repeat of the US one. (Have the Europe one).
