It’s back – earn 18,000 Avios with a subscription to The Economist

British Airways and The Economist have brought back their special offer for taking out a subscription. As you can see at this link, you can earn up to 18,000 Avios with a new one-year subscription.

Here are the two options on offer if you are a UK resident:

Print only or digital only: £179 with 15,000 Avios (1.19p per Avios)

Print and digital: £215 with 18,000 Avios (1.19p per Avios)

Subscribing to The Economist could make sense just for the Avios bonus even if you have little intention of reading it in detail, although there are occasional opportunities to buy points for nearer 1p each.

There are even better deals when looking at other countries. A digital only subscription for someone with a Canadian address snags you 15,000 Avios at 0.78p per point (C$199 / £116). Pricing in the Eurozone is unfortunately poorer than in the UK, with 1.6p per Avios on digital-only subscriptions in Belgium, France and Germany.

As always, if you are self-employed you may be happy writing off the subscription cost as a business expense which would sharply reduce your price per Avios even further.

O/T: I am flying to AUH at the end of the month in First. This is the 4th time only in this year that I tried to book the Elemis 15 min treatment for F pax, but was told that it is completely booked out for that day. I just can’t imagine so many F passengers waiting for the -T28 day to arrive and to immediately book the Spa.

Does anyone here have similar experience? I am not desperate about the 15 min treatment, but at this point, I genuinely wonder if BA is playing tricks 🙂

  I have managed to get a booking on my last 4 F trips.
  The secret is to call YouFirst at T-29 (not 28) and make the booking. I’ve had all slots available when I’ve done so.

  Worked for me again with a different address (one was delivered to work, one to my home). Old subscription expired by the time I took out the new one. YMMV.

    I would appreciate any advice how to take advantage of this Economist offer if I would like to use it as business expense but I already registered my company for subscription in the past. I guess even different address would not work for company name as a ‘new subscriber’. Many thanks.

      You don’t have to be a ‘new (never subscribed before) subscriber’. If there is a break since your last and this new sub, that works. You would not get the points for renewing an existing sub.

OT: Have BA and Iberia pulled out of e-rewards? Both BAEC and Iberia avios awards are now showing as ‘out of stock’. I’ll be very upset if they are – that was 48k/year I got from e-rewards (60k before avios got pulled!). 🙁

      I’ve just checked, there are two elements to sales tax in Canada, federal (5%) that can’t be escaped and then a provincial. Albertas provincial is 0% but you’ll still have to pay the federal 5%.

    Two people have publicly said they won – one on Flyertalk, one on a private BA WhatsApp group. One of these two people categorically was not the HFP winner, not sure about the 2nd. No sign on social media anywhere from the other four winners.
