British Airways has announced a new codeshare deal with its oneworld partner, Malaysia Airlines.
It does NOT include the Malaysia Airlines flights between London and Kuala Lumpur. It does, however, include:
- Malaysia – Alor Setar, Kota Kinabalu, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Kuantan, Labuan, Langkawi, Miri, Penang, Sibu, Kuala Terengganu, Sandakan, Kota Bharu, Bintulu
- Australia – Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth
- New Zealand – Auckland
- Indonesia – Denpasar-Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya
- Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City
- Cambodia – Phnom Penh
This means that you can book a ticket on ba.com to any of the destinations above, flying British Airways to Kuala Lumpur and then connecting to a Malaysia Airlines flight which will carry a BA flight number.
You will also earn Avios and tier points for the connection, although this is nothing new as Malaysia Airlines is a oneworld airline anyway. You may earn more Avios than before depending on any BA status you may hold and which ticket type you have (cheaper economy and business tickets will earn a little more than before).
For clarity, you cannot book these flights with a BA flight number on their own. They will only show in conjunction with the BA flight to or from Kuala Lumpur.
This is a reciprocal deal, with Malaysia Airlines adding its flight code to BA services to Aberdeen, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle via London Heathrow. Subject to regulatory approval, Malaysia Airlines will also be codesharing with BA on Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen, Vienna, Brussels, Geneva, Hamburg, Lyon, Toulouse, Paris and Zurich.
