InterContinental Edinburgh The George hotel is now open

InterContinental Edinburgh is now ‘open’, although for this hotel the concept of ‘open’ is a complex one:

you can argue that it has re-opened, since it was originally an InterContinental until a few years ago when IHG sold it

you can argue that it never actually closed, since the rebranding from Principal The George – who bought the hotel off IHG and rebranded it, before IHG bought Principal and rebranded it again – has been done without the hotel closing its doors (the building has been a hotel since 1881)

InterContinental Edinburgh The George open

However you look at it, InterContinental is now back in the Scottish capital.  This is particularly good news for InterContinental Ambassador members who can now use their ‘free weekend night’ voucher at another UK venue.

We reviewed the benefits of InterContinental Ambassador here.  Principal spent a substantial amount of money renovating the hotel, and IHG has just done some additional work to reach ‘brand standards’, so it should look good.

As an IHG Rewards Club redemption, it costs 55,000 points per night.  This is a decent deal based on my 0.4p per point valuation for an IHG point.

You can find out more on the InterContinental Edinburgh website here.

Virgin Trains and LNER used Superbreak for their combined train/hotel packages. Occasionally you could get a decent bargain with them.

Virgin were still sending out emails for it late last night.

    • Andrew says:

Sorry to see “Super Breaks” go. Until their health deteriorated recently, my elderly parents enjoyed a Super Break combined rail & hotel break at least twice a year to London.

Booking Bonvoy hotels with Curve… T&Cs explain that the cash back (3% for black) doesn’t apply for non-UK locations. Is their IT up to the mark? Has anyone had any successes?

    • What's the Point says:

I used my Curve at JW Marriott Phu Quoc, Vietnam. No 3% I’m afraid. I queried it with Curve.
      Told, UK locations only

Pleased to report we are in The George next weekend on a trip booked several months ago (in anticipation of the change) for 55,000 points a night, which seems to be the same cost in points as the room we had last December. I still have my free night voucher to use, but there are no rooms left at this rate, so will stick with the points booking.

We noticed the new Intercontinental signage on the George when we were in Edinburgh 2 weeks ago staying at the Kimpton Charlotte Square on a free night. Sadly don’t rate the Kimpton for service, though. Poor check in experience, no raid the bar credit offered, quoted the secret social password and no treat delivered to room as promised, given a noisy room supposedly an upgrade, and shambolic breakfast with staff arguing amongst themselves and actively trying to avoid taking orders. Ended up getting comped both breakfast and evening cocktails when we mentioned this at check out. Were told that social password gift would have been miniatures of whisky or gin or plate of shortbread delivered to your room, once they find out a bit about you and your likes and dislikes (! ) Doorman were very helpful and chatty and pool was great, though no space for lounging. Prob wouldn’t go back, defo not on a paid stay.

OT: I registered as an Emirates Skywards member as about to book flights. I can see many travel blogs mentioning their Refer a Friend option under My Account. I have spent a long time looking for it but can’t find it and even looked in FAQs. Could anyone help please. Just can’t see where to send the link from!

    • A270 says:

Just to update, I used their online chat and they said they withdrew the programme so no longer there.

  • James says:

Is it possible to convert HSBC points to Marriott Bonvoy points through any of the airline partners?

  • Timbo says:

Just had an email from Amex asking ‘Have you used your Addison Lee credit this month?’
They might want to filter out postcodes of people who don’t live anywhere near London before sending us an insulting reminder of what we’re paying for but are unable to make any use of. Thanks Amex, for reminding me how increasingly irrelevant and useless your London-centric card is to me.

    • Gringo says:

I also just got that email. I used AL last week but still haven’t seen the credit! Thanks for reminding me Amex…

    • fivebobbill says:

100%! I got that email this morning too, and I live 45 miles west of the Isle of Man!
We’re cancelling the missus Plat next week once her latest spend points post, 45 offers and not one of them of any use to man nor beast.
      * Unless of course I want to fly to Leeds, London, or Birmingham for 25 quid off some new Tommy Hilfiger cacks!

    • Callum says:

Jesus Christ get a grip. If you’re insulted because Amex reminded you of an offer that is only available in London then you have serious issues…

      • r* says:

Its more that they increased the price by 25% and added total garbage as extra ‘benefits’ while reducing pp benefits. Addison lee and whatever that airbnb wannabe no one uses is credit? Trash.

        • Timbo says:

Indeed. I’m insulted by the fact that they think I should be impressed by being charged more for less. It is, quite literally, an insult to my intelligence. I didn’t say I was going to swear a blood oath of vengeance, just that the email was asinine and insulting to send to those of us who don’t live in London. They are perfectly capable of filtering these email campaigns and should do so. All they’ve done is remind me how increasingly useless the card is to me.

          • Callum says:

It’s an automatic email that has absolutely no idea whatsoever whether you might use Addison Lee or not. Newsflash – people who don’t live in London do indeed sometimes visit London… The number of people on here who get “insulted” when large multinational companies do something that’s not beneficial to them personally is utterly ridiculous.

The price also obviously wasn’t increased to pay for this – Amex clearly just got a good deal.

      • fivebobbill says:

Good grief, trod on a tantrum toe there Timbo!
So who exactly is it has the has the “serious issues” here… 🙂
Timbo makes a very valid point.

    • Simon D says:

I was on the verge of upgrading to a Platinum before the price increase and this irritating “additional benefit”. It’s a real pity that they didn’t consider doing something with Uber which would have been more more useful for me.

    • Harry T says:

I’ve used it in Newcastle, as Addison Lee contracts out to local companies. Unfortunately, the subcontracted local company gave me such appalling service that I had to complain to AddLee (who handled it well, I must say).

    • TM says:

Even in London, I don’t use it because it is always more expensive than Uber/minicabit.

  • Kev says:

    OT:

Tried to downgrade my BAPP to the blue BA card.

Got a letter saying that the application was unsuccessful.

Does that seem odd? I thought you could upgrade / downgrade a BA account at will?

    • Rob says:

No, the rule is you can only have 1 BA card. Apply for the other and the first is shut. There is no such thing as upgrading, in practice.

      • Kev says:

So am I as well to just close my premium BA? Voucher is on my BA account now and I have other Amex cards I could pay taxes fees and charges with when I’m going to book my 241. Would like to get some of my £195 refunded. They won’t delete my voucher out of my executive club account when I cancel the card will they?

        • Rob says:

Amex will tell you they will, but they won’t.

        • Rooster says:

You also need an Amex to pay for the voucher though so bear that in mind and for my experience it either needs to be BA or one of their own brand card ie gold/platinum/standard not a cobranded one

          • Yorkieflyer says:

In my and many others experience any Amex card has been fine

  • Albert says:

    OT Marriott Bonvoy benefits

We have an upcoming stay at the Langley using points but only gold bonvoy status

Any tips on getting an upgraded room? Check in on the app in advance, or call them, or just ask at the check-in desk?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Hope its quiet and ask at the desk? The hotel has very few rooms so as a gold youre probably not high on the upgrade list
