HEATHROW STRIKE UPDATE: British Airways and Virgin Atlantic emergency measures

British Airways has published the list of emergency measures it is taking in light of the strike due at Heathrow Airport on Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th August.

ALL airlines operating out of Heathrow will be impacted by this strike which is by staff directly employed by the airport. I have focused on BA in this article but you will also be hit if you are flying with someone else.

Heathrow has told airlines to cancel 172 flights, of which half will be BA services.  The list is not public. BA will not trigger these until the last minute in case the strike is called off.

British Airways guidelines for Heathrow strike on 5th/6th August

First, a quick Virgin update ….

Virgin Atlantic has announced that some Heathrow flights will depart and arrive via Gatwick instead.

This is now confirmed – on Friday night it was just a possibility. Check the Virgin website here for details.

Back to the British Airways changes ….

The bottom line is – if you can change your BA short-haul flight you probably should, although cancellations are not being allowed.  At present, the A350 media flight to Madrid is still going ahead.

No long-haul changes are being allowed.

You won’t be taking much hand baggage, you may not be fed, security will take a long time and flights will be cancelled whenever the airport gets too busy.

Rebooking is available on any BA Heathrow, Gatwick or City flight between now and 12th August.

I have summarised them here but you should read the full version if you are impacted:

If you choose to travel and not rebook your flight:

No hand baggage will be allowed onto aircraft except for ‘small personal items’, eg a purse.  Checked baggage weight allowances will not be increased to compensate.  This rule also applies to connecting passengers who start their trips outside Heathrow.

You can check in your baggage from 6pm the day before your flight

Only minimal catering will be offered on the shorter British Airways short-haul routes, either free (in Club Europe) or paid-for (in Euro Traveller)

The First Wing in Terminal 5 will be closed, as will all Fast Track security lane

Security queues will be substantially longer than usual

The catering information has been released to the travel trade but not to the public:

There will be minimal catering on the following routes (apologies for the use of airport codes):  ABZ, AMS, BHD, BLL, BRU, BSL, CDG, DUB, DUS, EDI, FRA, GLA, GVA, HAJ, HAM, INV, LBA, LUX, LYS, MAN, MPL, NCL, NTE, STR, TLS, TXL, ZRH

If you are in Club Europe you will receive a voucher to spend in the terminal and a muffin or flapjack on the aircraft

If you are in Euro Traveller you will be offered tea, coffee, water and a biscuit

For clarity, British Airways is not allowing you to cancel your flight.  

However, half of the 172 flights identified for cancellation are likely to be BA services.  BA knows which flights are on the list but will not inform passengers until the last minute in case the strike is called off on Sunday.

Further strikes are planned for 23rd / 24th August.

    Someone at BA hasn’t thought through the rules for changing flights operated by partners. We have a codeshare Aer Lingus flight on the 6th and Aer Lingus emailed to suggest we rebook. But, they can’t rebook for us because the ticket was bought from BA.
    The BAcall centre isn’t letting people change flights if the flight is operated by another carrier…
    It doesn’t seem to matter at all that the ticket was bought from BA and that the operating carrier is recommending that we change.
    So, both BA and the operating carrier are suggesting I rebook. I want to rebook, but can’t.
    BA is treating passengers on codeshare flights as second class.

      I feel so sorry for anyone trying to deal with BA customer service at a time like this. If at all possible, try and speak to someone in a UK based call centre (use the UK number with the withheld function on your own phone). IME they are much more likely to apply common sense to the situation!

    What is the impact for these dates and for any potential BA strike if you had used a 2-4-1 voucher that was close to its expiry date ?

    O/T as no bits today.
    I have a BA 241 that I want to book for Thu 6th August 2020 to HKG.
    When will is the earliest that I can this flight and which number is the best to call? Thanks!

      You are best off booking the outbound leg online as soon as it becomes available (though you may be in competition with other people trying to do the same). This will be around 1 am AROUND August 17th (2020 being a leap year seems to have thrown the award release system out a bit). But you can confirm this by checking the latest available date available as of today, and counting forward to calculate when seats for 6/8/20 will be released.
      It’s the inbound leg which requires a phone call if you’re using a 2 4 1.

    Anyone looking to generate spend might want to look at ‘Much Better’. It is an ewallet mainly designed for gambling websites, but can order a MasterCard or transfer funds to your own bank account. For August they let you top up at a pay point, for free (normally a fee). Most, certainly my coop allows Amex to pay for paypoint.

    I have not actually topped up with paypoint yet, but have put around 20k through with hsbc premier we. I seem to get points but it might be charged higher interest so just paying it off as I go.

        fees table doesn’t open on my PC, usually the ‘add credit’ fees come in at 2% then you also pay another fee to withdraw at ATM, check it out for yourself

    Sounds like everyone is blaming BA for this potential mess and at the same time the HFP post doesn’t make it clear that this is not a BA strike. Its not BA’s fault, this is a Heathrow Airport staff strike.

      I don’t think that’s the case at all; it’s just that anyone flying on an affected BA flight is largely dependent on BA to sort it out. Heathrow airport isn’t going to be rebooking anyone.

      At the end of the day it will affect BAs operations, and consequently, BAs passengers. Also remember it’s the airline who collects the passenger service charge… So it’s easier to make a direct link with airlines than with the airport.

        I take it the talks last night between unite and Heathrow airport with Acas involvement were unsuccessful. Are there plans for any more talks over the weekend ?

          I believe that at this point, the strike will go ahead. Depending on how chaotic it’ll be, there will (or not) be strikes later this month.

            there’s a cut-off point tomorrow about 5pm – when BA & others publish the cancelled planes – where even if the strike gets called off last minute, you’ll get pretty much the same disruption

            so we have so,mewhat more than 24hrs to wait & see

            tbh I can’t see why HAL doesn’t settle, the strike demands are not much different to the cost of strike 5/6th Aug, factor in 23/24th Aug and you’d be pretty stupid not to settle if you were just thinking about costs

            and there could obvs be further strikes over the next few months

            This may be true, but you need to remember that strike costs are a one-off wheras salary increases are for ever (i.e. a year-on-year cost) not to mention that giving in too easily emboldens the other other side to ask for even more next year…

          Talks between union leaders and Heathrow management at the conciliation service Acas, aimed at averting the strike action, lasted until late on Friday and resumed on Saturday.

    It’ll be busy on Wed but it won’t be too bad and shouldn’t affect you any more than a normal summer day. That’s because while there will be passengers who rebooked onto Wed flights, there’s no capacity to fly any more flights, so the terminal throughput is unlikely to increase any more than usual during August.

    OT: BA Amex related – got osst the spend for the companion voucher – when and how will I receive it?
    Trying to see when I will be able to cancel/downgrade the card.

      Your next BA AmEx card statement confirms your voucher and it will appear as an option in your BAEC account when booking a flight and you choose “pay with Avois”. Note that part cash part Avois is not an option. The only cash is for the taxes etc which have to be paid by each person and are about the same for Club or First.
