New BA Amex offer – get 1,000 bonus Avios for £100 of British Airways spend

Assuming Amex’s IT was working OK overnight, a good new offer should be showing on your British Airways or British Airways Premium Plus American Express card this morning.

If you spend £100 or more at ba.com between today and 15th September, you will receive 1,000 bonus Avios.

For clarity, this bonus comes from American Express, not British Airways.  The bonus Avios will be added to the ‘pending Avios’ showing on your online American Express statement and will be transferred over as part of the monthly sweep into your British Airways Executive Club account.

1000 Avios with £100 British Airways American Express spending

The offer is limited to the first 50,000 people to register.  This is quite a large number, clearly, but there are a lot of cards out there and I imagine BA or Amex will do an email over the next few days.  I recommend you register now, just in case.

You need to visit the American Express website here, log in and navigate to the statement page for your British Airways American Express card.  The promotion should show under the ‘Offers’ tab at the bottom of the screeen.  It should also be possible to register via the ‘Offers’ section of the American Express app.

1000 Avios with £100 British Airways American Express spending

Here is the small print – don’t get caught out:

Your transaction needs to be made at ba.com.  There is no mention of transactions booked via the call centre counting.

You can only earn the bonus once although supplementary cards would be OK if the deal appeared on the ‘Offers’ page for that card.

Your qualifying spend needs to be in Pounds.  If you book a flight which starts outside the UK, it is likely that it will not be priced in Sterling and so will not qualify for the bonus.

Your payment must be made directly with your American Express card.  You cannot use an aggregator such as PayPal, which recharges a transaction to your BA Amex.  You CAN use Apple Pay or similar.

Whilst not mentioned in the small print, Amex has confirmed to me that this is a cumulative offer so the £100 does not need to be spent in a single transaction.

For clarity, if you buy Avios via this page of ba.com, it will NOT trigger the bonus.  ‘Buy Avios’ transactions are handled by an intermediary called points.com, and it is points.com that appears on your credit card statement.

    Thanks, on our main cards but not supps. Other new offers U spotted are 15% back every time at Gleneagles Hotel, Morrisons (only 5% for me this time), Raft Furniture £150 back £750, River Island £10 back £65, and Tommy Hillfiger £25 back £75.

        15% back up to end of October. If this had been in place in May when we were there it would have been my best ever Amex deal!

      There are a lot of Morrissons deals around at the moment.

      10% back is a regular on both my BoS & HfX current accounts.

      This stacks with the “in-store” offers on my employer’s perks scheme which is currently at 5%. The similar Waitrose “in-store” offer has been steadily reducing. It was 10%, then 5% and now it’s just 4% for spend over £30 – 1% otherwise.

      Wowzers – I’d missed the Gleneagles offer. we’re staying there in a couple of weeks and it is a big bill. Weirdly I only have the offer on my supplemental card for my wife’s BA Amex but that will do nicely. Thanks!

    On both of mine, unfortunately Mrs S and I both made transactions over £100 2 days ago. On a positive note both are showing as pending so hopefully will take another couple of days to post properly. I got pinged for 2 cancellation fees after booking a 241 outbound, using full Avios for the return and phoning the following morning to add the 241 voucher. Hey ho, you live and learn.

      Why? What about the 24h free cooking off period?

      Perhaps it was a tel booking fee (which I’m v explicit about not being charged).

        It was more than 24 hours ago, when I added the return it stayed as 2 separate locators rather than combining the flight. For various reasons, I’ve had to move a holiday to Vietnam forward by 2 months hence the cancellation. When I cancelled the £70 was retained from both bookings.
