American Express launches a spend-based bonus promotion for Gold and Platinum cardholders

American Express has launched a new bonus points offer for many people – but not everyone – who have Preferred Rewards Gold or The Platinum Card.  The deal may also be available to Green, Centurion and Amex Rewards Credit Card holders.

It is a very simple ‘spend this, get that’ offer.

On my Platinum card, I have:

‘Spend £6,600 betweeen 11th July and 11th August and receive 6,000 bonus Membership Rewards points’

My wife has a more reasonable offer on her Gold card:

‘Spend £700 between 11th July and 11th August and receive 1,000 bonus Membership Rewards points’

There are a couple of things you need to note:

You are not automatically registered.  You need to go to the ‘offers’ section of your Amex online statement page and click ‘save to card’.

It doesn’t start until 11th July

Spend via ‘Payment Aggregators’ such as PayPal does not count

Looking at our comments section yesterday, there are many different versions of this offer.  The most aggressive was:

‘Spend £13,300 between 11th July and 11th August and receive 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points’

I think the smallest was:

‘Spend £300 between 11th July and 11th August and receive 500 bonus Membership Rewards points’

Important ….

If you are tempted to hit your target by putting your Summer holiday spending onto your American Express card, remember that Amex charges a 3% foreign exchange fee.

The bonus points above do NOT offset the 3% fee.  You are still better off using a specialist credit card which offers no rewards but has no FX fees.  The free Tandem Money credit card is even better, offering 0.5% cashback on your FX spending as well as not charging any FX fees.

I think it is fair to say that I won’t be triggering my 6,000 bonus points, although I am sure we can divert £700 of spending onto my wife’s Preferred Rewards Gold.

    OT but Amex.
The £10 credit for using Addison Lee has finally appeared on my Platinum card online statement for spend in June.

  • sophie says:

Nothing for me, nor my partner’s account. this info is untrue

  • Steve says:

Nothing for me, please don’t publish misleading articles HFP. “Some Gold & Platinum Cardholders via targeted offers…” would have been a more accurate choice of words.

    • Jonah says:

+1 On this one. Possibly the dullest comments thread of all time too. Apart from “here’s my Accelerate challenge”.

  • Ben E says:

Interestingly I’ve got something very nice on my BA card: Spend £335+, get 10,000 Bonus Avios

  • mark says:

I got spent £2900 for 4000MR & spend £350 at Hilton for another 4000 MR

  • Matt says:

Nothing on my Gold Rewards or Supplementary Gold Rewards, although I did get Spend £350 Hilton or more, get 4000 MR points.

  • FCP says:

I pretty much never have the offers posted on HFP as available.
    EXCEPT, I got this one!!
    4,000 MR for 3,500 spend.
Never got any of the Amex Travel ones, which would of been the only offers actually of use to me.
Luckily I will be in the UK for this period as refuse to use the card overseas with the FX charge.

    • Mike says:

Sorry for targeting my pedantry at you, but this really has me grinding my gears: it’s “would’ve been” as in “would have been” the perfect conditional tense, which makes far more sense than “would of been”… Would of what?

Not singling you out, FCP, just a public service announcement given how often I see this.

      • Anna says:

Nearly as annoying as “if I would have” instead of “if I had” – seemingly standard in the US these days and fast creeping in here!

  • SimonW says:

It was limited to first 2,000 accounts who saved it to their offers section……

    • Rob says:

…. which makes no real sense. Is that 2000 people per version or 2000 in total (which makes no sense, given the huge number of Gold cards out there)?

      • Roy says:

2000 is probably enough for them to measure what effect this promotion has on people’s spend, and how sticky that spend is once the promo is over.

        • Crafty says:

+1. For some reason people on here seem to think offers are rewards. They are there to drive and measure behavioural changes.

          • Chris says:

Since Amex are pushing a lot of advertising currently, based on Amex Offers, I would hope they ARE selling these as a reward to customers and not just asking customers to take part in behaviour analysis.

The spend behaviour analysis will be done as a secondary benefit of the offers. The primary target is customer acquisition/loyalty.

          • Roy says:

These days marketing is heavily data-driven. I’m sure they want to drive acquisition and loyalty, but equally they will want to test their promotions on a small scale to see how effective they are at driving acquisition and loyalty before spending money on a larger scale version of the promo.
