Emirates Skywards is offering tickets for the Queen’s Club tennis tournament in London for the 2nd year running. This is the traditional mens event which runs immediately before Wimbledon.

It runs from Monday 17th June. Standard tickets are priced from 7,500 Skywards miles to 10,500 Skywards miles per person. VIP hospitality packages (for sale for cash by Keith Prowse for £1,200 inc VAT for two) are available at 30,000 to 40,000 miles per person.

My wife and I went last year on a VIP package. I can’t remember what we paid in terms of miles. However, the value is questionable at 30,000 Skywards miles each, which I’d value at £300, given that you can redeem for the tickets on their own for 75% fewer miles.

My biggest gripe was the Emirates group itself. There were probably 16 of us, of whom two were Emirates hosts and 12 were travel agents on a jolly, invited for free by the airline. My wife and I were sidelined during the lunch, which was on one large table. In contrast, if you go to an Arsenal game using miles, virtually all of the guests in the Emirates Box are Skywards members on redemptions – and virtually all of them are HfP readers.

If you were moving points, transfers from American Express Membership Rewards to Emirates Skywards are usually instantaneous. However, your accounts must already be linked for this to happen. Unfortunately you cannot see availability without having the necessary miles in your account so I wouldn’t risk making a speculative transfer from Amex.

How to earn Emirates Skywards miles from UK credit cards (December 2021)

Emirates Skywards does not have a UK credit card. However, you can earn Emirates Skywards miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards. These are:

American Express Preferred Rewards Gold (review here, apply here) – sign-up bonus of 20,000 Membership Rewards points converts into 20,000 Emirates Skywards miles. This card is FREE for your first year and also comes with two free airport lounge passes.

The Platinum Card from American Express (review here, apply here) – sign-up bonus of 30,000 Membership Rewards points converts into 30,000 Emirates Skywards miles

American Express Rewards credit card (review here, apply here) – sign-up bonus of 5,000 Membership Rewards points converts into 5,000 Emirates Skywards miles. This card is FREE for life.

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Emirates Skywards miles which is an attractive rate. The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Emirates Skywards mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

OT: My partner has Amex Platinum. He recently opened BA credit card (without fees). If he upgrades to the fee based card, will he get a bonus? We are a family of 4 so have found it difficult to make use of 2 for 1 on same flight and because of school dates taxes are very high in holidays. However, he opened one to gain referral points and keep Avios the ticking. Also, does adding a supplementary on free card give a bonus? Lastly, if he upgraded and later on wants to downgrade to free card again, is it allowed?

  If he held the free BA Amex before he upgraded to the Premium Plus, he should be ineligible for the sign up bonus, but will be able to earn a 241 voucher if he spends 10,000£ (including any previous spend on the free BA card).

  You get 1000 Avios for adding a supplementary card holder on the free BA card.
  You get 3000 Avios for adding a supp on the paid card (BAPP). However, if adding a supplementary on the free card, you would need to remove the supplementary before upgrading to the paid card if you wanted to get the bonus for adding a supp on the BAPP as well.

  You are allowed to downgrade from the BAPP to the free BA. Some people do this after earning their 241 voucher.

      Yes I’ve done it, Blue > Spend 9k > Upgrade to BAPP > Spend another £1k > Downgrade to Blue > waited 3 months > Upgraded to BAPP > Spent £10k, didn’t get a second voucher in the same year 🙁 I had heard a rumour that it worked, but it didn’t

        As you downgraded after 2-4-1 voucher then upgraded again 3 months later, I take it this was all within one year so yes, no 2nd 2-4-1.
        However, does this work if you had upgraded again from blue at 10k in Y2?

  There’s no bonus for upgrading, but you can up/downgrade whenever you want. Re school holidays, the taxes/fees are no higher than at any other time, it’s the number of avios required that increases. We tend to travel with 2 of us using a companion voucher and the 3rd one on a paid ticket – this gives us a lot more flexibility and you can earn a lot of avios and Tier points for the cash fare.

    So, for instance, you could book a flight and car package for 2 of you, with all the associated benefits, and use the companion voucher for the same flight for the other 2 (1 adult and 1 child on each booking). I find this option gives us cracking good value in the school holidays!

Sunday travel project…
Trying to help family fly SIN-CDG this August.
2 people plus baby, they have 200k avios and similar amount of MR points. Want to fly J if poss, and realise might only get one way with those points. (Cash for one way if need)

Have looked at QR, BA, CX.
Anyone got any experience of using avios to upgrade Finnair from economy/premium to business class?

Any other bright ideas?

O/T my girlfriends employer has just booked her a ticket on Qatar, LHR to Manila return in economy. How does she credit Avios/tier points to her ba exec club? She has not flown Qatar before. Thanks.

  I’ve done this by going into Manage my booking option. It should let her add her frequent flyer details just like she can request a special meal etc. She’ll just need to choose BA from the drop down menu and add her membership number.

    Always worth checking at checkin or bat drop, that thé FF number is still on the booking. Also watch carefully to see that the miles from thr QR Flight do credit to the BA account within about 3 days of the return flight being completed – i had to call BA to get QR flights credited before.
    
    Lastly check which fare class she bas been booked into on each leg. Check in wheretocredit dot com this will let you check how much she should earn depending if BA or other program. If her employer was flying her in J i think she could earn Silver tier points from this. But so few tier points can be earned in Y it makes more sense to credit to whichever program will give you the most purchasing power in its miles and maybe not just BA.

Could the 747 Domestics be linked to the new Uniform Launch due this Summer? If rumours are to believed, the new uniforms will be “classic” in design with a heritage vibe, so if flying the heritage livery 747, this could make sense

I was on a full Amsterdam 747 sub a few years back when they were clearing a backlog due to fog and we got a drink from the bar and pretzels – was a bit of a fun challenge for the long haul guys who are used to a different pace on their usual runs!
