Amazing €999 (£873) Iberia business class fare to Cancun and Mexico City

Iberia has launched an amazing €999 Business Class fare between Madrid and Cancun or Mexico City.

It isn’t clear why this offer is running – I can’t see any advertising for it – which means we have no idea how long this deal will last.  The fare does not show on ITA Matrix so I cannot extract the fare rules.

We published this article on Monday afternoon. There is a chance the fare is gone if you are reading this on Tuesday

It IS valid over Christmas at this price.

Remember that Iberia flights earn British Airways tier points and Avios.

Here is an example for August, click to enlarge:

Iberia deal to Mexico

And to Cancun, with a connection on Interjet in Economy, at just £852:

Iberia Cancun deal

If you doing this for the BA tier points, you might want to start in Seville, Bilbao, Palma, Valencia or Santander via Madrid (Barcelona does not work).  This is assuming that Air Nostrum connections with an Iberia flight number earn tier points in BA Executive Club which I cannot guarantee.

Iberia business class to Cancun

This trip will earn 280 tier points return in British Airways Executive Club, or 320 if you start in Seville or Bilbao.  Spanish domestic flights are only 20 tier points each way in Business.

Iberia Mexico City business class deal

The aircraft is an Airbus A340.  This does not get the latest business class seat used on the Iberia A350 which I reviewed here.  However, I reviewed the similar Iberia A330 seat a couple of years ago and it is still very good.  It is fully flat and a 1-2-1 configuration.

If you don’t have a credit card with 0% foreign exchange fees, your best option for paying is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers triple points – 3 per £1 – when you book flight tickets in a foreign currency.  This is because the transaction triggers the ‘double points for airline spend’ and the ‘double points for foreign spend’ bonuses.

Click here to visit the booking page on iberia.com and see what you can find.  For well under £900 return, plus the cost of getting to Madrid and back, you can’t go wrong.

If you’d prefer not to pay, of course, our detailed guide on how to redeem Avios on Iberia is here – it is well worth a look as there are many ‘sweet spots’ and taxes are low.

    Guadalajara and Monterrey too.

  • Sam says:

Odd, can’t see the fare filed, and as you say, only bookable direct so no book by date…

If you’re ridiculously avios rich you can get for £88 return (and 164,000 Avios!!!).

    • David says:

You wouldn’t stay avios-rich for long with that mindset…

  • Paul says:

Ref Air Nostrum, I had a connecting flight with IB flight number and tier points and Avios posted no problem. This was almost 2 years ago. Has anything changed since then?

  • MikeL says:

I’m sure the recent shootings in the Mexican tourist hot spots has nothing to do with it

    • Russ says:

Well that can’t be ignored MikeL.

      Good prices otherwise thanks Rob.

    • Dominic says:

Perfectly safe to visit; media scaremongering.

      • MikeL says:

How can you say / guarantee that ? Fact – there’s been several incidents in tourist hot spots involving drug cartels.

        • Rob says:

I’m guessing it is still safer than South London is for a teenager.

          • Julian says:

I think you will find you are only likely to be killed in South London if you are young, male, involved in the distribution of illegal Class A drugs and disproportionately from certain ethnic minority groupings.

The difference in Mexico is clearly that discos and night clubs also used by tourist are being attacked whereas in South London the murderers are more discrete and only generally killing those who have failed to pay their bills or who have infringed on their drug distribution territory.

But following previous aggressive promotions of bargain fares on Malaysian Airlines surely by now readers should be used to the idea that many of these bargain business class fare recommendations are usually cheaper For A Reason……………..

  • David S says:

Random dates till March 2020 so far but overnight stay at Mexico city to go Cancun for almost all available days. Shame since was thinking of cancelling my avios booking and book this.

    • Kenny says:

I don’t so.. can’t find anything beyond 31st of Dec. So Christmas outbound is good, but have to get back before 31st Dec, which defeats the purpose… tried Feb March etc.. no avail.

    • Danksy says:

Yes – that’s my experience, i’ve just booked, but the 9 hr layover in Mexico airport will be a killer! I got two return tickets for just less than £1800 over Christmas !

But goodness the hotel prices are £££

      • Kenny says:

Hi Danksy, what’s your return leg? Is it after 31st Dec?

        • EmmaB says:

We booked a return in March, out to CUN back from MEX.

        • Danksy says:

Hi Kenny – I’m returning on 30th December.

BTW – Horrendous Layover at Mexico on the way out (9 hrs!!) and its 11pm so not worth the risk of venturing out of the airport!

Also – the Cancun Intercontinental has good availability for reward nights at 35k per night. It’s a positive bargain when compared to the $580 room rate for rooms on/over Xmas, less so for earlier in December when room rates are $160 per night (plus saving resort fees etc.)

          Cheers

          • Rob says:

Does IC waive resort fees? Thought it was just Hilton.

          • Danksy says:

@Rob – it didn’t appear on the checkout value as a “FEE” but did when I was buying cash nights.

  • Nick says:

For what it’s worth, Nostrum flights are for all intents and purpose Iberia ones, and do earn tier points as normal (assuming booked under IB codes. If you have a weird travel agent that books YW then you’re screwed). I got BA Silver thanks to Air Nostrum flights so can confirm it works in practice as well as in theory.

  • Sebastián says:

It is still valid today (Tuesday) and I can find some dates in Feb and March 2020.

  • Paul Hickey says:

Great deal. Few this plane on MAD-MEX route recently, lounges, seats, food, service was good. My advice is DO NOT BOOK SEPARATE CONNECTING FLIGHTS, any longer than a few days in advance – Iberia constantly change timetable of this flight and UK-SPAIN flights. You need to be flexible to change.
