A quick note for Edinburgh visitors that the Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor is leaving the chain tomorrow.

It isn’t clear which brand, if any, it will be adopting.

Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor leaving Hilton

If you have any stays booked here you may wish to change them, especially if you were expecting elite status benefits or points earning.

There are various other options in Edinburgh city centre, including the Waldorf Astoria The Caledonian (where I spent a couple of nights recently, although I didn’t review it), Hilton Edinburgh Carlton, DoubleTree Edinburgh City Centre and Hampton Edinburgh West End.

The hotel website is here – for another 24 hours – if you want to find out more.

OT: My 10k bonus MR points (for spending £15k) on my Gold Charge Card has now posted, and am interested in going to Plat. I recall people saying that you can get 20k MR bonus for the upgrade. Do I need to wait for that to appear as an offer, or is it automatic? Have also read about people upgrading from Green to Plat for similar bonus – should I downgrade to Green first to get the best bonus?

  • Anna says:

Thanks Rob and other HFP-ers who convinced me to sign up for the SPG card – OH and I both took one out in Feb and triggered the sign up bonuses – I’ve just booked the Westin Grand Cayman on points for April next year for 2 nights prior to going into our condo unit, this would have cost $1800 at Easter cash prices!

  • Voltron says:

OT – Downgrading to BA free card and noticed there is now an option of choosing to select the insurance:

    YOUR INSURANCE BENEFITS ENROLMENT

    * Your Card comes with insurance benefits, which are provided under a group policy that American Express holds for the benefit of its Cardmembers. There is no additional charge to you if you choose to receive this benefit.

Please choose whether you would like the insurance benefits:

    • Rob says:

This is a new EU rule, apparently. Consumers must now actively opt in to insurance benefits.

The same box appears if you apply for a Platinum card.

      • Liam says:

When did that start? I applied for a Platinum card a month or two ago and don’t recall seeing it (which doesn’t mean I haven’t just forgotten, of course).

  • Jonny says:

OT: Super specific, but does anyone have any experience with TfL tickets and whether they qualify as a 2% “travel” purchase on the costco amex? I.e. zone 1 – x monthly/yearly travel card (or I guess even PAYG). I have asked a couple of times on Amex chat, but can’t really get an answer.

I once stayed at the Britannia in Birmingham for work. At breakfast I was eating mine and, sat nearby, was a smartly dressed woman, also eating the buffet breakfast. Next thing, a member of the front desk stormed in and approached this woman. “Where did you get that breakfast? You are room only” she demanded. Then she snatched the half-eaten plate from the lady and told her she could only have it back if she paid £7.95 there and then. The woman took out her bank card and cheque book and paid the sum due, whereupon the remains of her breakfast were promptly put back on her table. That’s customer service for you.

      🙂

    • Brian W says:

I have an office very near the newish Hampton by Hilton West End in Edinburgh. They never have anybody manning the entrance to the breakfast area in the morning so when I’m in Edinburgh I often pop in and have a free breakfast despite not staying there. Works a treat. I’m Diamond and stay about 80-100 nights in Hilton’s annually so I don’t feel too guilty about it!

    • Alex Sm says:

      Are you serious?

  • Ammar says:

Ot – anyone used Kaptan in Paris for rides, is it the same as uber? Any data points or experiences?
    Thanks

    • Liam says:

I used them in Lyon a couple of weeks ago when I was there for a few days and it worked well. Very similar user experience to Uber. Google advertised a discount code on Maps (I think just GOOGLE, but do check) which gave me €5 off my first six rides.

I tried to use it once in Paris after that and I had a very bad experience—the driver drove straight past where I told him we were, and then proceeded to ignore my calls/messages and just drive around for a bit—but they refunded me when I emailed to complain.

  • Vasco says:

The Hilton on North Bridge is miles better than the Grosvenor, even if my stay at the latter was not quite the sh*tshow others here describe, I still don’t think it’s any loss.

    • Colin JE says:

+1. Staff were great at Grosvenor but the rooms need an update. Have not stayed at North Bridge Hilton Carlton but run courses in its function suites and used the restaurant. Definitely worth swapping to if you’re booked into the Grosvenor and you’ll be closer to the action and Waverley Station.

    • Dale says:

I think the Grosvenor is a very nice and friendly hotel with a great Scottish breakfast, okay rooms have character and aren’t the sterile boxes that some seem to prefer on here, but that’s because it’s a series of converted townhouses.

It’s just going to be called ‘Edinburgh Grosvenor’ from now on, not part of a chain, and I know that cos I’m staying here tonight!!

  • Rui N. says:

OT but Hilton related: I’m attending an event at Wembley Stadium and plan to stay overnight at the Hilton next to the stadium.
I see that they have parking for £15 per 24 hours which is great, but do you know if you can reserve a parking spot in advance? Since this is not hotel-only parking, I’m afraid of the parking being full with non-hotel folks attending the event at the stadium!

    • SimonW says:

On event days, the Hilton normally charge £40ish… Ive pre-booked it (for less) loads of times when Spurs played there, and never had an issue getting a space.

      • Rui N. says:

Thanks Simon. Did you prebook with the garage the Hilton uses? How do you do that? Call the hotel? Or are there any websites to book parking next to the stadium? Thanks!

        • SimonW says:

I use yourparkingspace dot etc etc….. hilton and holiday inn let u book a spot. or driveways if not available…. £12.50 I was paying, before they worked out Spurs were playing and blocked it !

        • Rui N. says:

THanks very much Simon. Appreciate the help.

    • John says:

Don’t worry your £15 rate you’re easily get a space in the car parking beside the Hilton Wembley as and event day they charge £90 to park in there you don’t have enough parking privileges though but if you validate your parking ticket at reception you get 24 hours parking for £15
