British Airways is offering some very aggressive fares out of Amsterdam if you fancy a break in Cape Town or Johannesburg in 2019.
For return Club World fares from Amsterdam, you are looking at:
€1,250ish return to Cape Town
€1,350ish return to Johannesburg
…. for bookings by 19th December
…. for travel between 6th – 30th January or 18th February to 15th October
However … in reality you are going to struggle to find availability early in 2019. Your best chance is later on, when the weather is not so good. It can be done though – here is an example for March.
If you can make the dates work, this is a good deal. Remember that, as the stopover in London can be for up to 24 hours, nothing stops you flying to Amsterdam, coming back late in the evening, going home (if you’re London based) and then heading back to Heathrow or Gatwick the next day for the long-haul leg.
If you don’t have a credit card with 0% foreign exchange fees, your best bet to maximise your miles when paying is with the British Airways American Express Premium Plus card. This earns double Avios (3 per £1) when you book at ba.com or via BA Holidays. You do not get double Avios if you book with the free British Airways American Express card.
Another option is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers triple points – 3 per £1 – when you book flight tickets in a foreign currency, because it triggers both the ‘double points for airline spend’ and the ‘double points for foreign spend’ bonuses.
