Why a 40% bonus when you buy World of Hyatt points means a good Mallorca deal

Until 27th November, Hyatt is offering a 40% bonus when you buy World of Hyatt points via this link.

This is as big as World of Hyatt bonuses get.  It is also the most generous, with the full 40% bonus kicking in with a purchase of just 5,000 points.

The deal is obviously worth a look if you need to top up your account.  It may also be worthwhile if considering a stay in a top tier Park Hyatt such as the ones in Paris or Sydney, where buying the points may be cheaper than paying cash.

At the top end, you are paying $1,320 for 77,000 points (55,000 plus a 22,000 bonus).  That works out at 1.71c – or 1.33p – per point.

Park Hyatt Mallorca is a great way to use this

The relatively new Park Hyatt resort in Mallorca is a location where buying points may make sense.   Prices for cash are still a little scary – rooms from Euro 484 (£430) in August 2019, or Euro 523 (£465) if you want a cancellable one.  A redemption at 20,000 points per night (£266) would be a great deal.

£266 per night for a 50 sq m room in a brand new 5-star resort in Mallorca in August is an outstanding deal.  The Park Hyatt is actually fairly cheap for cash at £465 per night because it is still new – the St Regis Mardavall is €800 (£700) per night for a cancellable room in the same week.

O/T: As i can’t get through on the phone hoping this will be quicker. I’ve received the bonus on my SPG card with balance of 35k points – Unlike my Gold card, there’s no option to transfer points (to SPG) Is there another process i need to follow and any idea how long it takes to transfer?

    Thanks in advance

    • RTS says:

it auto transfers all points once a month.

      • Louie says:

Perhaps that should be “it is supposed to auto transfer once a month”. No sign of my August points yet and Amex aren’t interested.

  • Tom W says:

    Perfect thanks!

  • RTS says:

    WHAT! I GOT OFFERED 5%!!!

    • Max says:

I have 6% on my Platinum card at Morrisons – will not use it for shopping, but I guess I could get Amazon gift cards etc. Shame the points are so bad.

    • Steve says:

I have 8% on my Platinum Companion card and the wife has 5% on her Platinum charge card.

Completely OT but as bits, does anyone know if we can expect avios from Level flights at some point? I have a few reservations to make and their times are best but there’s no mention of avios. Odd because had to make them on Vueling’s website which of course does give avios.

    • Rob says:

Thought you could into Iberia? Or am I confused?

      • Russ says:

Well we may both be confused but maybe with good reason. It does say on some routes “For the moment, we’re taking you to our partners at Vueling to book flights’ so I’d imagine these aren’t loaded onto level’s site yet. Vueling meanwhile have confirmed they will only award points if the flight is both booked on their website and flown on either Vueling or Iberia metal, which leaves Level out.

I signed up on Level’s website before booking the flights and there’s no box which I can see to add any avios membership number. The very briefest of searches shows no award space on Iberia’s site for Level. Interesting.

        • Russ says:

          Ah, in Level’s FAQ section:

Q, ‘Is Level part of oneworld?
A, LEVEL is not part of the oneworld alliance and customers travelling on LEVEL do not receive oneworld tier benefits.’

          I think there’s the answer.

O/T, what’s the best way to close m6 Iberia account? I’ve 90k miles from the promo that I won’t use therefoew will transfer them. Thanka

    • Anna says:

Not sure if you’ll be able close the IB account if you have a negative balance, which I think happens when you transfer those points somewhere else.

      • Brian W says:

Transferring 90k somewhere else won’t leave a negative balance………….Iberia removing 90k on 1st Dec if 90k haven’t been spent via Iberia Plus before then (as the terms suggested) may create a negative balance for many!

        Time will tell!

      • Shoestring says:

No transferring out just leaves you with a zero balance for now (until 1st Dec) – then you can close the a/c.

Closing the IB a/c – not done it but in the T&Cs they promise to close your a/c immediately upon instruction. So maybe though a phone call? Or email. I’d get on the case as IB CS is pretty dire.

OT – The Virgin PE upgrade voucher from the new virginmoney card. Is this upgrade for one way or a return or can i use it for 2xone redemptions?

  • Sam says:

OT: Any estimates on when Curve might make their announcement of accepting a certain credit card type? I have a rather large purchase coming up and only accepts Visa/Mastercard.

  • Lady London says:

Are Iberia redemptions also cheaper than doing same redemption via BA if flying on AA aircraft from USA to Europe?

    • Rob says:

Do NOT do this, because AA redemptions booked via Iberia are non cancellable / non refundable / non changeable. Taxes should be the same anyway.

      • Lady London says:

Yes I’m aware that as soon as I add a non-BA or non-IB segment to my avios booking, I won’t be able to change or cancel the booking anymore. But it’s approaching the time when I wouldn;t be able to change the booking I made with the 90,00 avios anymore (1st December), AA 77w is a lot more attractive in J than anything BA can offer, so I was prepared to take the risk that switching a BA flgiht to a better AA one would then fix the booking unchangeably.

However if taxes for AA bookings back from the US are the same on IB as on BA (i.e. highly ridiculous amount) then I’ll give this some more thought before switching. Think I will though. I really don’t like the 74x’s back from the US. They are so stressful on the ears/body to fly, compared to all the newer aircraft that are available. So I might switch to AA 77W flight anyway and take the risk.

        Thanks Rob.
