Hertz has been running various promotions this year to celebrate its 100th birthday and has now launched the official ‘Centenary Sale’.

It runs until Monday 12th November, although logged-in Gold Plus Rewards members will be able to book until Monday 19th November.

It is valid for rentals picked up before 16th December across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.  Both pre-paid and pay on collection rates are included.  All car groups are reduced but not vans or the ‘Dream Collection’ of performance cars.

The headline deal is ‘up to 25% off’, with a higher ‘up to 30% off’ for Gold Plus Rewards members.  As always with the murky world of car rental pricing you should treat such claims with a pinch of salt.

However, if you have any rentals booked between now and 16th December you might want to reprice them just in case the sale does throw up a bargain.

Details of the Centenary Sale are on the Hertz website here.

OT – IHG “double points plus more” promotion. Can anyone confirm whether you need to earn ALL 15,000 double points for it to count towards “complete 4 of 4 offers”? Thanks.

    • RogerC says:

After three stays the counter on my double points target is showing 12% complete and is therefore not counting towards my completion bonus. While that seems ludicrous – I’d need a stupid number of stays to achieve it ~ I’m not hopeful of persuading IHG of this.

      • Alex W says:

Thanks for the feedback. Very annoying as it means needing 15,000 base points – around £1300 before tax.

OT: Given it seemed everyone had got better a better amex deal than me on Starbucks spend, I checked my BA blue card and saw I had the 20% off offer on there! While I doubt I’ll be using that, I’ll definitely be using the “Spend £5 or more and get 500 avios”. Terrific deal.

Such giveaways seem worryingly commonplace at the moment. The devaluation must be imminent.

  • Adam says:

OT as bits: If I use Creation IHG Platinum card to pay for an ihg property abroad in a foreign currency – do I get 4 points per pound because it is a foreign currency or do I get 8 points per pound becuase it is a foreign currency and an IHG hotel? Latter is probably to good to be true 🙂

Looks like today is my lucky day, I won 10k points in the Marriott game!

OT – Marriott Rewards Question – We are planning to stay at the St Regis NY next year. Our timetable only allows us to be in NY for a maximum of 4 nights. We will be using reward points for the booking, so the cost of booking 4 nights will be the same as 5. Is there anything we could do to avoid wasting a night?

If we booked up for 5 nights, is there any way we could we cancel the 5th night and receive any points back?

    • Mark says:

don’t think so, but might be worth having the extra night depending on the time you plan to leave. If you have a late flight connection you will have the room all day.

    • Rob says:

No. What you can do is book 5 nights and so guarantee yourself a late check-out – book yourself the 10pm BA flight to Gatwick back and stay in the hotel until 6-7pm!

You will pay another $50 resort fee though.

OT: I signed up to Amex Platinum and have had it for 8 months. I have done maximum referrals. If i downgrade to Gold, will i need to pay the £140 annual fee? Also, will I be able to do more referrals. I know I will only get 9k as opposed to 18k.

    • Anna says:

Have you paid any fee for the Platinum yet?

      • A270 says:

Yes, was charged the full fees after a few months. I’ve had t since February.

        • Lee says:

I thought gold charge card not exist any more. Not sure if you could downgrade from a charge card to credit card.

        • Anna says:

I thought you just meant change over to Gold. If you cancel Platinum you will get your fee refunded pro-rata, then presumably you will get your first year free on the Gold credit card but no sign up bonus as you won’t have had the 6 month break.

    • Rob says:

Yes, fee kicks in immediately. No more referrals until 1st January as they go by MR account.

      • A270 says:

Thanks. I opened the card in Feb or March so if I keep the Platinum, I can start new referrals from 1st Jan? Right now I have maxed out the 5 referrals.

  • BlueHorizonuk says:

OT: Does anyone know if Hyatt charge the cash portion of C+P upfront or at checkout?

    Thanks

    • Lyn says:

Sorry, I don’t know the answer. Just in case you aren’t aware of it, there is a rumour that the number of points Hyatt charge for C+P could be changing for bookings made from November 1st to something more in line with actual cash prices.

      • Rob says:

Seems to be confirmed now. Moving to 50% of the cash rate so no extra saving over using 100% points.

  • Stefan G says:

Do we know if Lufthansa will still post 1 Mile for mile retention until June 2019, as they had originally said? I know there is a M&M credit card out but I am not very keen in paying the annual fee to have it.

    • Rob says:

I think you’re safe, whether or not they post 1 mile. The position is very clear.
