American Express Shop Small is returning in December.

‘Shop Small’ is an annual American Express promotion which can prove very lucrative.  You receive £5 cashback for every purchase of £10 or more you make in a ‘small shop’ which is generally any independent retailer – including quite a few pubs!

Whilst limited to one credit per shop, you can register every American Express you earn to multiply your returns.

It has not been officially confirmed that Shop Small will return in 2018.  The website (here) is not saying anything.

However, my understanding is that it WILL happen.  It is pencilled in for 1st to 16th December 2018.

We will cover this again nearer the time.

I’ve had quite a few CW flights this year and not one has featured food from a trolley.

    • Thywillbedone says:

I’ve had just one…in Club Europe. I was in an aisle seat and I think cabin crew brushed past me 30+ times serving everything individually (on a one meal sector with only a few rows to serve). Completely pointless to my mind anyway.

    • Doug M says:

Me neither. I suspect crews may have given up on it before official

  • Roger says:

    Yes

    • Ken Middleton says:

How does that work, please? You are saying that you can refer yourself?

      • BJ says:

Yes, just follow the recommend a friend link in your account and … apply yourself 🙂 Nothing guaranteed but most of us are getting the bonus. I usually save the link to a document, clear my cache and then start from my saved link. I doubt that is necessary but I do it anyway.

  • BJ says:

So long as they don’t drop the food ( in either sense) that will be fine 🙂 There was no trolley on my last CW flight in July, perhaps the cabin crew decided to drop it themselves, unfortunately the service still took about three hours. I think the ‘m’ in £600m was a BA typo.

    • Nigel the Pensioner says:

      +1 !!!

    • Lady London says:

Or maybe, just maybe, British Airways meant 600k rather than 600m would be their actual spend. that would just about cover the White company bedding.

I am still seeing reports that all of BA’s catering will go ot Do & Co from 2020 though.

  • BJ says:

Shop Small: You might have awarded Harry gloating rights, he reported last night that it is open to registration but I’m not sure where he found it, nothing on my amex offers.

    • E says:

I got an email from Amex on Wednesday about Shop Small. It said:

Thank you for using your American Express® Card to support small businesses.
Did you know you will be rewarded for supporting this business and many others during Shop Small in December?
Be rewarded with a £5 statement credit when you spend £10 or more in a single transaction in-store, once at each participating small business.
To take advantage of Shop Small, simply save the offer to your Card from 1 November 2018, and start shopping from 1 – 16 December 2018.

      • Liz says:

I had an email on 27/9 telling me to support small shop businesses with a link to the small shop map. It didn’t say the dates of the promo or a link to register but assumed it was going to happen.

  • Seat54 says:

I had Do&Co on my flight last week from LHR-ARN.
As I was eating it I thought it was quite good then noticed a Do&Co stamped chocolate desert.

Done my annual requirement though, until they sort coffin world out with some improved seats I will continue to only fly first, so will hopefully see the improvement next year with the food.

Just done a load of sectors on South Africa BA, where the planes are disgustingly dirty. There is no need for walls, tables and under lockers to have visible dirt on them.

    • Prins Polo says:

That’s technically not BA though I think – if I recall correctly BA only has a minority investment in Comair (to your point, it should still require Comair to clean their planes if they want to use the BA logo).

    • johnny_c-l says:

I had the new DO&CO on CE to IST a couple of weeks ago, so much better and the crew prefer it too as they can serve the entire meal on one tray so it’s much simpler. Normally prefer TK economy to CW but DO&CO now nudges me towards BA again.

      • Rob says:

But come on ….. IST is over 4 hours, loads of time for a keen crew to serve a plate at a time.

        AMS I understand ….

  • AG says:

O/T any sign of MR transfers to SPG working again? I requested a transfer just over a month ago and still waiting.

    • Jill (Kinkell) says:

I did a transfer from MR earlier this week, and points in my Marriott/SPG account this morning..However, like everyone else, my Amex SPG credit card points are disappearing into the ether. I’m waiting for 35k to land into my account

  • vindaloo says:

Didn’t you say last week that Do&Co was being extended to all (or almost all) long haul routes? Sure it was disappointing that this didn’t happen in the first place but now it seems like a step forward, and ditching the trolley service is just a way of getting the meals served before everyone has died of old age rather than a money saving exercise. Overall the recent news seems largely positive, albeit from a low base!

  • Paul says:

Did anyone actually believe that there would be £600. million of investment? ……. well given that people believed in £350 million a week for the NHS was coming I suppose they did.

For about 7 years now I have consistently said that BA approach is “jam tomorrow” believe nothing this organisation says until it’s delivered. They are masters of spin but haven’t got a clue how to run an airline.

You surely only use BA when it’s cheaper than everyone else, when it’s ex EU or someone else is paying…….. and set your expectations to low. You will not be disappointed.
