Has a 2nd Lloyds Avios Rewards upgrade voucher appeared in your Avios account?

I’ve had numerous emails from readers in recent days who have found a new upgrade voucher appearing in their avios.com account courtesy of their Lloyds Avios Rewards credit card.

If you didn’t get an email telling you it was there, it is worth checking anyway.  It will say:

Lloyds Bank Avios Rewards Upgrade Voucher
Valid from 29/09/2018
Expiry date 31/10/2019

It isn’t clear what is happening here, but it is a widespread situation.  My best guess is that this is part of the process of closing down the current cards.

Or, of course, it could be a mistake.

Lloyds was struggling to find a sensible plan which would allow them to close the cards.  They are being forcibly replaced with ‘next generation’ Mastercard-only Lloyds Avios Rewards credit cards which are substantially different from what you have now.

The new Lloyds Avios Rewards Mastercard will offer:

No annual fee

0.4 Avios per £1 you spend in the UK

0.8 Avios per £1 you spend outside the UK

0.4 Avios per £1 transferred on a balance transfer (this is a new benefit – Lloyds Duo Avios cardholders used to get Avios on balance transfers but Lloyds Avios Rewards cardholders did not)

….. plus an extra 25% bonus for Club Lloyds current account holders.

The bad news is:

There will no longer be a generous Amex card option

Overseas spending is no longer free – you will pay 2.99% on FX spend

There will no longer be an upgrade voucher

Because most cardholders will have their old card closed part-way through their membership year, it would be unfair to stop them getting a final upgrade voucher.

Lloyds may have decided that the cleanest thing to do is to give every cardholder their current year voucher.  It may also be a gesture towards Avios Rewards cardholders who are annoyed by the loss of 0% FX fees and the voucher.

Perhaps you should spend it quickly, though, just in case it is an error.

Yep, an unexpected voucher here. Tbh, I have two others in there which I’m struggling to spend, so I wouldn’t be too bothered if it was a mistake.

  • Jay says:

Hmph. Still waiting for my earned voucher from May or June this year (and all my points), and no sign of that or any bonus voucher.

  • Dirtyneedlebluesky says:

No unexpected voucher for me 🙁

My last being applied in July (that I only delivered l discovered about two weeks ago).

I’ve also had no official communication regarding the cards closing yet.

  • Anna says:

Still no extra voucher 🙁 We have a big year in 2020, OH and I both turn 50 and I’m retiring so looking to book a few nice jollies, I’d definitely be able to use it!

    • Danny says:

That’s amazing Anna. If you don’t mind me asking, what’s the secret to being able to retire at 50?

      • mr dee says:

        Investing

        • Rob says:

I found joining an investment bank at 23 works quite well, if you can stop them firing you until you’re 40.

However retirement is dull as **** which is why you’re reading this.

        • Shoestring says:

          I’m never bored!

        • cookies says:

i guess a very noob question, but I’m in my early twenties, and would love to start investing. Asking here, because I love the ideas and support from fellow readers.
          Investment ideas?

      • Anna says:

Good planning! When I left uni there were certain careers which allowed this – not any more though ????

  • GRIMZ says:

Im just away to trigger my voucher with my anniversary March 19. Do you think I would get another voucher if I spent a further 7k?

  • Ben says:

Interestingly I used a voucher earlier this year, and it would appear that they never removed it from my account (was told over the phone they have to manually do so). Now have two vouchers – Anyone tried the hack Rob discussed a year or so ago? – Booking and then cancelling within 24 hours, and receiving full avios value of the flights back?

    • mr dee says:

Can’t see it working now as they can barely get it right as it is booking the upgrade flights (Not available online without problems)

  • Dave says:

No extra voucher here either fee was paid early august, probably only spent 2k so far though

  • Tom says:

Had the additional voucher in my account this morning, one other that needs using as well.
