Has a 2nd Lloyds Avios Rewards upgrade voucher appeared in your Avios account?

I’ve had numerous emails from readers in recent days who have found a new upgrade voucher appearing in their avios.com account courtesy of their Lloyds Avios Rewards credit card.

If you didn’t get an email telling you it was there, it is worth checking anyway.  It will say:

Lloyds Bank Avios Rewards Upgrade Voucher
Valid from 29/09/2018
Expiry date 31/10/2019

It isn’t clear what is happening here, but it is a widespread situation.  My best guess is that this is part of the process of closing down the current cards.

Or, of course, it could be a mistake.

Lloyds was struggling to find a sensible plan which would allow them to close the cards.  They are being forcibly replaced with ‘next generation’ Mastercard-only Lloyds Avios Rewards credit cards which are substantially different from what you have now.

The new Lloyds Avios Rewards Mastercard will offer:

No annual fee

0.4 Avios per £1 you spend in the UK

0.8 Avios per £1 you spend outside the UK

0.4 Avios per £1 transferred on a balance transfer (this is a new benefit – Lloyds Duo Avios cardholders used to get Avios on balance transfers but Lloyds Avios Rewards cardholders did not)

….. plus an extra 25% bonus for Club Lloyds current account holders.

The bad news is:

There will no longer be a generous Amex card option

Overseas spending is no longer free – you will pay 2.99% on FX spend

There will no longer be an upgrade voucher

Because most cardholders will have their old card closed part-way through their membership year, it would be unfair to stop them getting a final upgrade voucher.

Lloyds may have decided that the cleanest thing to do is to give every cardholder their current year voucher.  It may also be a gesture towards Avios Rewards cardholders who are annoyed by the loss of 0% FX fees and the voucher.

Perhaps you should spend it quickly, though, just in case it is an error.

I have a 2nd one and was wondering why. Nice surprise though now I am struggling to spend 2 upgrade vouchers and 2 companion vouchers #firstworldproblems.

  • Dan says:

Not for me. I had already spent my £7k for this membership year which started in July and earned a voucher though (by buying cheap Swiss biz flights in the recent sale no less). So what do I get for the inconvenience of having my main card shut down?!

  • Rich says:

I’ve not got it – anniversary was in September and have yet to spend £7k. Our joint challenge is to get to the bottom of what the criteria are – if it’s not just gone to those who’ve hit £7k already. If I call Lloyds will I get a straight answer???

  • Nick_C says:

How can I use two upgrade vouchers for a return trip for two people?

I guess I could book outbound and return separately, but for the US wouldn’t this increase the fees and taxes? Any way around this?

    • Lev441 says:

You could book two individual returns for each of you, but you’d be on seperate booking numbers etc..

      • Nick_C says:

That would be my preference, but doesn’t the person with the voucher need to be on the booking?

        • Anna says:

Ring avios.com and they will book the 2 flights over the phone on one booking. I did this about a month ago with 2 vouchers.

        • Alex W says:

No, you can book for anyone even with the voucher. Besides, they should be able to book this as 1 ticket over the phone. They just manually adjust the price and then manually remove the vouchers from your account.

    • Jack says:

This also worked OK for me on the phone about a fortnight ago, they combined the taxes without me even asking, very easy after me fretting a lot in the weeks before I booked.

So we’re off to Walt Disney World next year and should be on a refurbed LGW 777 so no fuzzy IFE 🙂

  • Alex says:

Nothing for me. Mind you, I also didn’t get my last voucher without a plethora of calls and I’ve not yet had any paperwork about the Amex side of my card dying.

  • Steve-B says:

I’ve got two showing in my account, although didn’t receive an email as others have done. Meanwhile my wife still hasn’t got hers after hitting £7k two months ago. Typical Lloyd’s IT…

  • Neil P says:

No freebie upgrade voucher for me. My recently earned upgrade voucher is in my Avios account (which is working this morning for a change) but nothing else. All very random to me.

  • Greg says:

Yep, I’ve got one, but not my wife.
