British Airways has launched a new ‘double Avios’ offer for the Autumn.

This could prove lucrative but, as often with these offers, has the potential to backfire due to intriguing small print.

The sign up page for the offer is here.   If you had trouble earlier, it is now working.

British Airways BA 777X 777 9X

The offer is simple on the face of it:

You earn double base Avios (excluding cabin and status bonuses) on your next 10 BA flights

The offer runs until the end of 2018

It only applies to new bookings made after you register

Looking at the small print, the offer is also valid on American Airlines, Iberia and Finnair flights when travelling between Europe and North America on a BA flight number.  Don’t be fooled by the comment at the top of the landing page that AA, Iberia and Finnair flights to North Ameria count – the terms and conditions say they do not, unless there is a BA flight number on your boarding pass.

The offer is also valid on Comair-operated BA services in Southern Africa.

However, apart from the exceptions above, no other BA codeshare or franchise flight will count.  You won’t get double Avios on, for example, a Bangkok Airways, Qatar Airways, Vueling or Flybe flight with a BA flight number.

Here’s the snag though ….

You only get double Avios on your first 10 segments.

If you have a number of long-haul flights coming up before the end of the year, you don’t want to use up your 10 flight allowance too quickly.  This means, bizarrely, you may want to consider moving some short-haul flights away from British Airways.  This will preserve your 10 flight ‘double Avios’ allowance for long-haul flights which will be far more lucrative.

You can register for double Avios here.

  • ChrisC says:

Just saw this posted on the BA website – so if youbooked today and register by MIDNIGHT you’ll get the double avios

Apologies for the registration glitch this morning, it is now resolved and all Executive Club Members are encouraged to click on “Register Now” below, to complete their registration. Any Members that have booked on 27 September 2018, and register before midnight tonight, will be eligible for double Avios. Thank you and apologies for any inconvenience.

  • Nigel the pensioner says:

The trouble is these will all be relatively late bookings and the fares will be proportionately higher. I dont regret buying early, taking cabin and gold status enhancements and paying a fraction of the price. Its another superficial offering from BA which compensates those who are regrettably not in a position to get organised in advance.
More importantly it still doesnt address the lack of reward seats available on long haul since the Argentinian or Zimbabwean currency style devaluation of Avios!

    • Rich says:

That’s a very fair point, not least given the fact that the sale has just finished – sale prices plus some avois v. higher price plus double avios? I know which I’d choose.

  • Colin JE says:

By ‘move your bookings to another airline’ this could mean just change your frequent flyer number on your short haul bookings to another one world carrier.
I suspect the number of people booking ten short haul flights and some long haul between now and Xmas will be very small.

  • Jonathan says:

As others have already commented, it’s disappointing that unlike previous promotions, BA are only counting bookings MADE after registration rather than any flights taken after registration. Shame.

  • Jack says:

Where do we register? Can’t seem to find it.

    • Rob says:

You probably have an Ad Blocker on, which may block links in our articles. Heaven knows how you manage to understand our stuff though! Whitelist HFP and the link will appear.

  • Mark2 says:

    And another thing.
I have just been denied Avios on a John Lewis purchase because I used gift cards. Apparently this in in the T&C.

  • Lady London says:

And you think that’s the last devaluation of Avios? my bet is they might have pushed out the next devaluation to New Year – as British Airways has received has been so much bad press coverage of their failure to protect customers credit card data – but no later than that.
