The much improved Venice Airport lounge for British Airways passengers

When we were flying out of Venice two weeks ago, I was delighted to see that – as part of a major airport redevelopment – the Marco Polo lounge used by British Airways passengers (it is also in Priority Pass and Amex Gold‘s Lounge Club) has been overhauled.

The two photos above and below do not really do it justice.  There is now an outdoor terrace, an indoor Winter garden and decent food, and the variety of seating works well for solo business travellers as well as holidaying families.

There is even a barista – you are not allowed to make your own coffee.

One other benefit from the redevelopment is that there is now a direct elevated travelator link between the water taxi dock and the terminal.  You do not need to weave your way through the car park in the rain any longer.

If you have been to the Marco Polo lounge in Venice before and been disappointed, I recommend trying it again.

Tesco [and the Boots] offer appeared on my ‘Blue’ Amex MR card this morning. Both are good offers.

    O/T – Amex Plat / Avis

I’m about to leave on a two weeks fly drive to the US bought with BA holidays, so the car rental is with Avis.

I recently got the Amex Plat and I’m wondering if this will let me upgrade the rental?

I’ve tried to register for Avis Prefered via the Amex website but every time I get to the last page on Avis form I get a message saying that the operation could not complete.

Any advice about how to maximise any benefits I get from the Plat for purposes of this holiday would be much appreciated!

    • RakishDriver says:

My experience at LAX: The benefit from avis preferred is you don’t need to queue after an 11 hr flight, walk to your bay and drive off, paperwork sorted on exit. Need credit card saved on account.
      I assume same deal everywhere.
Re upgrades, expect to pay, but I recall that if you accumulate 2-3 rentals (can’ remember exactly) , you can then upgrade for free.

    • Louise says:

You can message them on Twitter to add BA holidays booking to Avis Preferred. Never been offered a free upgrade but it appears in app and your name on board etc

    • Liz says:

Our experience is If you hand over your plat card at the rental office with your Avis preferred card and ask nicely if any upgrades are available you normally get them. We’ve had some good upgrades for our previous road trips. Can only be done at airport locations as other places don’t have the car stock available.

My wife has a total of zero offers on her Gold card. Last month she had 2. At least it will give her a good reason to tell the person on the phone when she calls to cancel the card.

    • Crafty says:

This is happening on mine too (I’ve had it for about 2 months). Very odd and annoying.

    • Andrew says:

Are you checking both the App and the Website?

For some reason the offers don’t always match up.

      • fivebobbill says:

Great tip there Andrew, I had the Tesco offer in both myself and the wifes Amex Plat, but not on my BAPP. However just logged into my account via the Amex app after reading your post, and lo and behold the Tesco offer was in there – 400 avios for a tenner!

  • Kurt says:

I got the Tesco offer but it is nothing special. It is a one off 400 points only. So don’t worry if you have not seen it in your offers.

  • Pangolin says:

Still nothing but 3 useless offers on my Gold card after 3 months of putting all my spend on there – they appeared there as soon as I had the card but since then nothing new has appeared.

I only ever got useful offers on my Amex Plat and so I haven’t received any decent offers since I cancelled it.
Seems like Amex is punishing me for downgrading from Plat. 🙁

    • Kipto says:

Why downgrade from platinum to Gold ? just cancel the platinum and reapply in 6 months time.

      • Pangolin says:

Technically it wasn’t a straight downgrade as the PRG is now a credit card, rather than a charge card, so I cancelled the Plat and made a new application for Gold.

I decided to switch to Gold because the earnings are much better (a lot of my spend is airline bookings, or hotels/etc. in non-GBP). The PRG gives me 2-3x on these and the ongoing cost of the card is more sustainable than the Platinum. Churning isn’t really my things and the Gold card is something I’m happy to hold onto due to the excellent earnings (made 3K points in the first 6 weeks).

  • Tracy says:

Tesco offer is on my OH’s platinum credit card but not on any of our other 4 amex cards. Same with the earlier boots offer…..that card definitely gets the better offers.

    • Sundar says:

As a datapoint, do you frequently shop in Tesco/Boots ?

I do a lot and it is not on my offer list.

      • Tracy says:

Yes, we shop in both Tesco and Boots regularly….probably why we don’t have the offers

    • Pangolin says:

The Platinum definitely gets the better offers in my experience! I had 36 offers on my Plat when I cancelled it (even though this card was practically unused in the last year). The bulk of my spend was on the SPG Amex – which had a grand total of ONE offer available at the time I cancelled it (3% off at Prezzo’s… woohoo!).

  • Kevin says:

I get the best offers on the funny Amex gold credit card that used to go with the gold charge card and which I never use.

  • Liz says:

OT Am I right in thinking if you cancel a booking with your Lloyd’s upgrade voucher that you lose the voucher? I need to cancel our upcoming Tallin/Helsinki trip. ????

    • BlueHorizonuk says:

I believe so. Not sure if you can change the dates to keep the voucher though.

    • Reeferman says:

      Sadly, Yes
HOWEVER, you can amend it and retain the voucher benefit therefore. I learned this last week when I had to do exactly that. Seems the changes have to be for destinations within the same “zone” but airport (and date) changes are possible

      • Liz says:

Thanks! Been so wrapped up in having to cancel as my father in law is in hospital that I didn’t even think to try and change the dates. Now going for the Xmas markets as we had to use before Xmas. Brrr it’s gonna be cold! ☃️❄️
