Big changes to American Airlines’ international flight destinations

American Airlines has announced changes to its international network with new destinations in Europe coupled with a number of route cancellations.

The newly added routes to the UK and Ireland are:

Phoenix to London Heathrow, seasonal between 31st March 2019 and 26th October 2019 (daily)
Dallas to Dublin, seasonal between 6th June 2019 and 28th September 2019 (daily)
Philadelphia to Edinburgh, seasonal between 2nd April and 2019 and 26th October 2019 (daily)

The flights will be bookable on the American Airlines website from 27th August 2018. They should also be available as Avios redemptions via ba.com at the same time.

The current UK and Ireland routes which will be closed are:

Philadelphia to Glasgow (as of 29th September 2018)
New York to Dublin (as of 27th October 2018)
New York to Edinburgh (as of 27th October 2018)
Chicago to Manchester (as of 3rd September 2018)

How to earn American Airlines miles from UK credit cards (December 2021)

American Airlines no longer has its own UK credit card.

There is, however, still a way to earn American Airlines miles from a UK credit card.

The route is via Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy hotel loyalty points convert to American Airlines miles at the rate of 3:1. You receive an additional 5,000 miles bonus if you convert 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points at once.

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points is via the official Marriott Bonvoy American Express card. It comes with 20,000 points for signing up and 2 points for every £1 you spend.

At 2 Bonvoy points per £1, you are earning (at 3:1) 0.66 American Airlines miles per £1 spent on the card. This will increase to 0.83 AA miles per £1 if you convert Bonvoy points in chunks of 60,000 points.

Anyone know what the position is for Amex Platinum holders to get Starwood cards?

Do you still have to get Starwood and then merge them into Marriott or can you now get status straight to Marriott and if so at which level?

Can’t check online currently, hence the question.

Disappointing for EDI – new seasonal route to Philly to replace daily to NYC. I guess they’re feeling the competition from other airlines in the latter and there was hardly ever redemption space, but not a great change from a OW perspective.

Logged into my merged account and all my points are missing… showing Zero. . has this happened to anyone else? Amex SPG confirmed transfers in May/June and July of almost 13000. Not holding my breath I’m going to sort out very quickly.

Disappointing to see Manchester lose another route even after the Chicago route lost the 787 some time ago. Not Quite the northern powerhouse.
Seems Manchester’s attempts to be more than tourist hub to sunshine destinations is not going well.

Very few trans Atlantic routes left.

the redevelopment of the terminals may help but a lot of lobbying needs to take place to increase flights as its is well below capacity.

  I flew MAN to PHL twice last year, simply because of price. Both times AA in business. The whole airport experience is rubbish. Signage to the car park, an official airport one was very poor, within the car park spaces were not clear and availability of spaces not indicated in any way, the car park itself whilst next to the runway was a long bus ride to the terminal, which was the other side of the runway. Within the terminal the check in desks for business were hidden around a corner in a crowded terminal, the desks themselves didn’t make it clear what they were, the electronic signs displaying I heart Manchester instead. Having got through this I then encountered fast track security being slower than regular, and full of families with children, that’s never going to be fast track, no problem with kids, it’s just not going to make fast track work if you combine it with families. The security itself was rude and inefficient. The BA lounge is fine and the flights were great, but Manchester doesn’t need lobbying, it needs fixing its attitude if it wants to be a business origin.

OT – cancelling an Avios.com booking

Is there any free cancellation windows (24hrs cooling off or whatnot) or is it £35/pax from the moment you book?

  If the contact center is closed at the point of 24 hour expiry, then you can call when they open again and still cancel for free. This is specifically called out in the T&C`s.
