Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get bonus Avios and Virgin Flying Club miles from Tesco via the Pay+ app

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

I wanted to flag up this offer again today as it is a few months since we mentioned it and it is valid until the end of the year.

Tesco has a smartphone payment app called Pay+ (previously PayQwiq, a name that was dropped when they realised no-one could remember how to spell it).

It is Tesco’s payment app which let’s you pay your shopping and automatically collect Clubcard points.  Pay+ works a bit like Apple Pay or Android Pay, but with the added benefit of automatically adding your Clubcard number to the transaction so you don’t need to dig out your blue card.

To encourage people to try Pay+, until 31st December 2018 you will get 1 extra Clubcard point for every £4 spent in Tesco.  This is a decent offer, worth an extra 0.6 Avios per £1 or 0.625 Virgin Flying Club miles for every £1 of Tesco shopping you do.  It is a bit of a faff to set up Pay+ but once you’ve done it you’re good to earn bonus miles for the next five months.

You can read more about Pay + here. You will still receive all your usual loyalty points from your credit card too.

We had lunch at the Plaza Premium a couple of weeks back. I thought it was very good. They had World Cup cupcakes back then.

  • Jovanna says:

OT: I was making a two-day reservation with Avis last night. The price jumped from £44 to £125 when I signed in. I tried and tried to work out what was different in my profile to cause the change. I played and played with the settings / insurance preferences but I couldn’t get the price back to £44. I even made a booking at £125 to see if it would re-price after I confirmed the reservation. It didn’t, so I cancelled, logged out and made the reservation at £44.

Any idea how I can get my Avis Preferred number in the reservation? Is it possible? Hertz will never add it and it has to be a new reservation, which is sometimes best left.

    • Cormac says:

I’ve has success by just calling the office I’m picking up from a few days in advance.

    • Sandgrounder says:

You can call or email preferred, they will add the number. I did this via email in May after booking a better rate through Canadian Affair.

  • GeoffGeoff says:

Anyone know if champagne is available in the T5 PP lounge?
    TIA

    • Mzungu says:

Probably too late now, but they only serve Prosecco, and charge (I think) £5 a glass. It’s what they serve if you ask for Champagne 😮

  • Kilburnflyer says:

Worth pointing out again that you can use Ebookers bonus+ lounge passes (4 nights= Gold, 1 pass — 12 nights = Platinum, 2 passes) at Plaza Premium Terminal 5 lounge. Books through Lounge Buddy via a link that ebookers send you in an email.

Used these to access T5 Plaza Premium lounge in June as one of us didn’t have access to Club Galleries.

  • Greg says:

I quite like the Plaza Premium lounge in T5 which I access using my Barclays Dragonpass. However I am surprised nobody has mentioned the poor selection of drinks which are available. Just Carlsberg or IPA in bottles, poor cheap wines, a few cheap spirits (you had to pay extra for premium gin when I was there last month) and NO liqueurs or like Baileys at all. In addition they will not serve you a bottle of water, they must pour it in a glass.

    • the real harry1 says:

Greg, I feel for you. In a glass, you say?

    • Leo says:

The barman made me a decent Negroni.

      • Matt says:

BA galleries has their priorities just right for the British – great self serve alcohol selection and crap food except for great bacon sandwiches. What more could you want!

    • Ian Gleave says:

I never feel it an essential part of my travel experience to drink liqueurs before boarding a flight. Each to their own.

      • Pangolin says:

I could say almost exactly the same – except I’d remove the word ‘never’.

        • the real harry1 says:

Well, there are girly liqueurs and real man liqueurs, that’s all I’ll say 🙂

Not quite all: so Baileys/ Carolans are girly (disgustingly sweet but usefuk to have around as a student). What about Jagermeister or Unicum? Manly as hell in my books, herby and give power to your persuasion 🙂

        • ankomonkey says:

@TRH1 – not heard of Unicum and not willing to google it!

        • the real harry1 says:

Honest, nothing bad will come of it (so to speak!)

          It’s a fine manly liqueur 🙂

        • the real harry1 says:

There’s that Scottish one as well, ah here we go Drambuie!

Nobody would say that it’s inherently girly, it’s a bit unisex in my books 🙂

  • Steve says:

OT: does BA award availability open up at anytime of the day or do they get released as a daily batch at a set time each day. Not talking about T-365 days but last min availability over the next 30 days. Looking for F availability one way to California on a specific date and would prefer not to go via a connection in Texas or east coast. Iv seem lots of fluctuating availability near the date, when checking on over the last few days but cant decide whether to hold out or make a slightly inconvenient booking.

Also holding back to hear if Iberia are planning to open up combine my avios for 90k bonus per Rob’s comment yesterday

  • Dale says:

Not going to be quiet for long if it keeps getting advertised here!

Agree about, especially soft drink, no fresh orange or sodas etc on tap at all

    Chicken tikka masala is delicious

    • the real harry1 says:

Amex have done a remarkably good job of keeping quiet about UK Plat benefits so I wouldn’t be worried on that score 🙂

  • Tilly says:

I do like the Plaza Premium lounge. Good foos selection, even for someone who has allergies there was enough for me to eat for dinner. Nice and quiet too when I went on a Friday leading into the bank holiday, no problem finding somewhere to sit.
