The saga of the Iberia 9,000 Avios per flight booking promo rolls on …..

The saga of the ‘9,000 Avios for booking any Iberia flight, however cheap, and you don’t need to fly it’ promotion (see our article here) continues to rumble on.

People with long-term Iberia Plus accounts have received their Avios, in the main.  However, anyone who opened a new Iberia Plus account over the four days of the promotion is in a different situation.

Most people who opened a new account have been contacted by Iberia and asked to provide a passport scan and copies of their ticket receipts.  It was assumed that this was for fraud verification purposes, to ensure that people had not been opening accounts under fake names.

Iberia 9000 Avios promotion

Many (all?) people who do provide this data are now getting a follow-up email from Iberia saying that ‘inconsistencies’ have been seen in their bookings.  Due to these unspecified ‘inconsistencies’ no Avios will be awarded.  The flights booked can be cancelled but only by directly contacting Iberia to request it.

It seems that people who provide a passport copy but not ticket receipts are not getting this message – but I wouldn’t hold out much hope of getting a different end result.

This move is the first sign that Iberia may have messed up here and is desperately looking for a way out.  I admit that I was surprised that the Avios for long-term members dropped in so promptly, but given that Iberia had taken to the airwaves to encourage people to book I doubt they had a choice.

A view may have been taken that the airline has little to lose by telling people who only joined up in order to take advantage of this offer to take a hike …..

I have a ticket for tonight don’t think I am going to be able to get away from work in time . Anybody still looking for a ticket ?

OT: Does anyone know what’s happening with the Miles&More hotel booking site? I need to pick up a few thousand miles for a redemption and would rather do it off work hotel stays I need anyway than using up my MR points, but the site says

“Until further notice, Miles & More Hotels and Miles & More Cars are not available due to a technical change”

  • Tom A says:

I may have missed something here, but surely if you “no show” for ten flights IB have every right to shut down your FF account and cancel any redemption bookings you have made. BA after all have been clamping down on people skipping the last leg of ex-EU fares for exactly this reason. A handful of times you may get away with it but in this case, up to 10 flights?…

    • the real harry1 says:

That’s not the reason that BA don’t allow/ clamp down on people skipping the last leg of ex-EU fares… 🙂

Not sure why you think a no-show for a short haul flight in Spain is going to get your FF a/c shut down, that would be ludicrous.

OT – Lloyds credit cards. I sent them an online form yesterday after receiving “new” terms and conditions which made no mention of avios or the upgrade voucher. I have just had a call from Customer Services who stated that there is no date set for any changes to the current reward system, and if there is I will receive 90 days’ notice. The new Ts and Cs mention the £24 annual fee; CS rep said that they wouldn’t be able to charge an annual fee for cards with no rewards! Looks like this year’s upgrade voucher is safe. Spend year starts next February so when I hit the £7k target in the next couple of months I’ll move my non-Amex spending to HH and wait and see if Lloyds announces any changes in the meantime.

By the time many of us actually receive our bonus Avios, award availability on Iberia, BA and other Oneworld partners will be like finding the proverbial needle in a hay stack!

Iberia’s schedule currently shows availability up to May 2019. Anyone know when they release dates for June 2019 onwards? If it’s before 1st December, it might be worth waiting.

Also, can the Iberia bonus Avios be used to redeem on Aer Lingus?

    • KevMc says:

Iberia release flights 360 days ahead (compared to 355 days for BA), but I think they are only bookable from 359 days, so you can currently see their availability up to and including 4th July 2019, but can only book up to 3rd July.

Also note that they show on site from EXACTLY 360 days, not at midnight/1am like with BA ie if the flight is at 13:00 Madrid time, then the flight will be visible at 13:00 360 days before, and can be booked at 13:00 the following day.

  • the real harry1 says:

Tweet from today: “Hello Brian, the tweet is correct, you receive the Bonus Avios anyway, the only case you don’t receive them is if you ask for the refund of the ticket. If the flight is cancelled by the company or if you don’t fly, you will receive the bonus Avios. Kind regards.”

  • Robnan says:

Thanks Rob and Anika for a great night. Etihad were good sponsors and location was great. Enjoyed it a lot. Suggestions for future gatherings: a) name tags (stickers) to make it a bit more personal and b) make price £20 and have a few nibbles catered for. But congrats anyway handling a larger crowd and it was great to meet fellow travel buffs.

    • Rob says:

We had name tags at Christmas. The issue was that it slowed people down coming in, finding their badge – and it took Anika ages to make 150 and 250 would have been a nightmare. If people DIY’d their tags (we give them a blank on entry) that might work.

We’re not hugely keen on doing food. Canapes cost £1+ each and money gets swallowed up amazingly quickly.

OT: Any reason every comment I make is sent for moderation? Missed out on the tickets earlier 🙁
