Virgin Money has launched a bonus miles offer with its life insurance policies.

Until 7th August Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members who take out a life insurance policy will receive 10,000 Flying Club miles.

The key things you need to know are:

The minimum premium seems to be £6 a month for a level term policy

The 10,000 Virgin Flying Club miles are awarded up to 60 days after the sixth consecutive monthly payment

You must be a Virgin Flying Club member

You must be a UK resident and over 18 years old

This offer is for new customers only

One offer per person – joint policies receive the same 10,000 miles

The application website is here. You can also apply by calling 0800 0728870.

Virgin Money life insurance policies come with various perks including access to the Virgin Money lounges.

Virgin Money’s website gives the following price example:

“Virgin Money Life Insurance from £6 per month. Based on a 30 year old non-smoker purchasing single level-term £202,000 cover for 10 years. Prices correct as of May 2018.”

If you qualify for the cheapest monthly payment of £6, you need to pay at least £36 to receive the 10,000 Flying Club miles.  This assumes you are happy to cancel before the miles arrive, as that may take an extra 60 days as per the rules.

You will in this case receive 10,000 Flying Club miles for your £36 of premiums.  0.36p per Flying Club mile is a pretty good deal indeed ……

The downside is of course the paperwork you need to complete.  Depending on your health, and based on experience with Tesco Bank life insurance promos in the past, you may also be asked to have a medical examination before being accepted.

The closing date for applications under this offer is 7th August, so you have over a month to decide whether you want to take out a life insurance policy with Virgin Money.

  • Carl Hamill says:

Perfect. I need life insurance anyway and that rate looks pretty good to me even without the miles.

    • Mark Hilton says:

With prices this good I don’t understand why anyone would want to cancel. I am keeping my policy

      • Genghis says:

It does seem much cheaper than the Tesco / Sainsbury’s cover where we were paying about five times as much each month for only about double the cover. No idea if any of them are any good though.

  • BJ says:

Good for FC but a little more iffy for FC-Honors. Potentially looking at £48 versus £56ish at current rates for a 100% buy Honors promo. However, if willing to cancel after 6 months then good for Hilton too. Also useful if anybody needs another direct debit for a bank switch.

  • d4ve says:

The ‘from £6 per month’ looks a little confusing to me as a few lines up it also says ‘from £7’. This is also based on £200k. I have not yet completed an application but got a quote yesterday for the min cover £10k reducing term for 5 years at 98p/month. Anyone see a reason why this would not attract the points?

    • the real harry1 says:

Nothing in the T&Cs against it (no minimum payment/ month)

      • BJ says:

A little amazed Virgin missed this given they already learned their lesson on ISAs. I expect T&C will change soon after a flood of 5yr HFP applications today. Thanks d4ve and Harry, just had a punt on a £1.04 policy.

    • Frenske says:

      Good I found a quote for £1.50pm

  • the real harry1 says:

Virgin quote app is broken, somebody say when they can get thru

  • Callum says:

I answered everything honestly and went for the minimum cover level – came out as 83p a month. As said before, the T&Cs don’t mention anything about a minimum premium amount to qualify, so this should be a pretty good return!

    • the real harry1 says:

You are but a stripling, young Callum – £2.25 for an old frat such as mygoodself – hardly going to break the bank to keep that going as long as it takes to get the points 🙂

      6 months would be 0.135p, 8 months = 0.18p lol

Probably worth taking a screenshot of the T&Cs as they stand today…

      • callum says:

Yeah, when 1000 new policies suddenly get taken out for less than a pound a month, I’m sure alarm bells will start ringing!

  • Andrew Stock says:

Not worth the time and hassle. I applied and they wanted all these documents and evidence from my GP and consultants for my lower back pain.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Unless you were actually going to claim and it wasn’t just for the 10k FC why would u disclose it?

      • Jonathan says:

Because the insurance industry share information so if you lie on one application then it could potentially affect other policies that you do rely on! Not worth being selective with your disclosures for the sake of a few cheap airmiles

      • KT says:

exactly. I got 10k miles for 10 gbp presuming I cancel in 8 months. thats the plan. cancel once miles have credited. not after 6 months.

        • AndyW says:

A reminder article in 8 months time to check the points would be great..

  • BJ says:

I hope this does give rise to a spate of suicides, or worse, amongst HFP readers over tge next 5 years.

    • Alan says:

Bit harsh hoping your fellow blog commenters start committing suicide.

Most policies won’t pay out for suicide anyway – is the Virgin one different?

      • BJ says:

OMG, should have been ‘does not’! Thanks Alan 🙂

      • Nick M says:

In my experience, the exclusion is usually only for the first 12 months…

        • Lady London says:

How many times have you tested a suicide clause?

        • Simon says:

fun fact and reasonably famous in the world of casualty insurance, one chap took out life insurance with the intention of suicide, read those t and c’s and the calmly waited 12 months and then did it. (not really a fun fact)

    • K says:

I really hope that was a typo and you meant to say ‘doesn’t’….

I am having my usual fun on being declined for cover trying to decide if it’s based on my weight (ex rugby player) or being honest about previous anxiety & depression. Nice to run through the questions now and then for the fun of seeing whether I’m still uninsurable!

      • BJ says:

Yes, typo, sorry if anybody took offense.

      • Nick M says:

K – if you do actually need (/want) the cover then it will be worth exploring further.. I am an IFA and have been able to source policies for people where the computer initially said no.

        • K says:

Thanks Nick – i was previously refused about 5 years ago via an IFA, so have come to the conclusion that unless my circumstances change and I actually need life insurance, it’s not worth the hassle! Thanks though 🙂

    • Lady London says:

No, that was hamsters when T policy led to mass deaths

  • Dan says:

I’ve signed up, slightly concerned whether my wife will be able to collect the 10,000 miles alongside the cash payout if I don’t make it to Christmas.
