We went back. Our new review of IHG’s Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam hotel (Part 2)

This is part two of my review of the Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam hotel, part of IHG Rewards Club. Part one of my Kimpton De Witt review, which you can find here, talks about the rooms and part two focuses on the public spaces.

IHG offered me a free night with dinner and breakfast when they heard that I was heading to Amsterdam for the inaugural Eurostar trip.  HFP paid all of its other expenses.

The House Bar

I didn’t have a drink in the bar, but Rob asked me to check if the bar was still very dark!  It is – at night.  It wasn’t during the day which is why this pictures turned out ok and you can actually see the pretty stools.

Dinner

The hotel restaurant Wyers is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can access the restaurant either from the hotel or the street and it seems to do a decent trade with locals as well as hotel guests.

The dinner menu had a good selection of meat and fish dishes which seemed like a mix of Dutch and American / Californian cuisine.

I had Ceviche Westside as a starter and Sucade (beef, Dutch spaetzle, veg) as my main. It was very good, the service was great and I would definitely come back to this restaurant even if I wasn’t staying at the Kimpton.

There was no breakfast buffet which I found a pleasant change.  The breakfast menu had a selection of egg dishes and every guest got fruit and yogurt as a ‘starter’.

I ordered the salmon with egg which cost an additional €3 if you have a ‘breakfast inclusive’ rate.  There was also a meat dish on the menu which was €3 extra.

I found it a little bit weird that I was handed the bill to sign before getting my food. My food was sitting on the counter for literally 5 minutes before it was brought to my table.

Lobby

I liked the lobby area which took up pretty much the whole ground floor.

Next to the reception was a further sitting area with a fire place.

If you looking for a hotel which offers a pleasant environment for you to do some work or meet clients then Kimpton De Witt has a lot to offer.

The gym

There is one!  It didn’t feel cramped and there was a good amount of room between the machines.

What else?

Dogs are allowed and not charged extra.

Kimpton De Witt has a number of bicycles guests can use free of charge on a first come first served basis.

Conclusion

I’m glad that we went back to Kimpton De Witt as it definitely seems to have improved since Rob stayed at the hotel last year.

Obviously the design is a matter of taste and one other guest I talked to complained about the size of the room – but then again she was American and is used to bigger spaces.  Kimpton De Witt is no better and no worse than your typical high-end European city hotel in terms of room size.

The lobby area was very inviting and serving complimentary wine every evening is a pleasant way for the hotel staff to mingle with guests and get feedback.

Whilst the hotel is on a busy junction, the location has a lot going for it if you are coming into the city via Centraal Station, as most visitors do.  It is only a five minute walk and, in the other direction, a similar stroll to Dam Square.

Next up for Kimpton in Europe is a property in Paris.  There are also plans to convert some of the hotels in the Principal chain, recently bought by IHG, in the UK to the Kimpton brand so one may be coming to a city near you soon.
