Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

ENDS TONIGHT: Buy up to 84,000 cheap Avios points, from 0.7p, via Groupon Ireland

It’s back! You can buy cheap Avios points – from 0.71p – simply by heading over to Groupon.

The link for the deal is here.

This time there is a fundamental change to the offer, and it is for the better.  It is being run by Aer Lingus Aer Club, not Iberia, and via Groupon Ireland, not Groupon Spain.  This means that, if you have a problem receiving your voucher code, your chance of getting it resolved as a non-Spanish speaker is now much improved.

I am also in touch with the people at Avios who are looking after this offer, so if there are any problems with missing codes we should be able to resolve them.

Note that, whilst you need to buy now, you won’t receive your Avios until 28th June.  There have apparently been fraud issues with the Iberia version of this offer and a delay is being put in place in case of problems with payment cards.

This is a now an Aer Club deal.  This means that you need an Aer Club Avios account (easily fixed by going to aerlingus.com if you don’t have one).

In the past, an avios.com would double-up as an Aer Club account.  This is no longer an option as all avios.com accounts are being closed.  Even if you have an avios.com account, you need to open an Aer Club account.   During the sign-up process, when you are asked if you have an Avios account already, say ‘No’.

If the Aer Club website is refuses to accept your application form, try removing the space from your post code and, when formatting your mobile number, put the first two numbers in the first box and the rest in the 2nd box.

When your Avios have arrived in your Aer Club account, you can move them across to your British Airways Executive Club account by using the ‘Combine Your Avios’ feature on avios.com or ba.com.

What do the Avios cost?

There are five price levels- the 2,000 Avios deal is the cheapest.

If you do not use an existing groupon.ie account and open a new one, you can use code HELLO15 to save a further 15% (capped at €20).

2,000 Avios = €19 (£16.71) – 15% with HELLO15 =  0.71p    SOLD OUT

4,000 Avios = €59 (£51.91) – 15% with HELLO15 = 1.10p   SOLD OUT

8,000 Avios = €99 (£87.10) – 15% with HELLO15 = 0.93p

15,000 Avios = €189 (£166.28) – €20 with HELLO15 = 0.99p

20,000 Avios = €249 (£219.12) – €20 with HELLO15 = 1.00p

35,000 Avios = €439 (£386.32) – €20 with HELLO15 = 1.05p

You can buy a maximum of ONE of each remaining package, which means 84,000 78,000 Avios in total.  If you buy multiple packages, remember that the HELLO15 discount is capped at €20 per order and not per package.

Even if you make a separate Groupon purchase for more codes to take you beyond 84,000 78,000 Avios, you will not be allowed to apply them to your Aer Club account – although obviously you could buy for family members and add the codes to their Aer Club account.

If you do not use a 0% payment card, remember to factor in the 3% FX fee to the prices shown above.

What happens next?

You will be emailed a voucher code.  This must be redeemed at aviosvouchers.com.

The voucher will only be accepted for redemption into an Aer Club account, not an Iberia or British Airways account.

You can only redeem your voucher between 28th June and 28th July.  Do NOT buy if you need the Avios immediately.

The big question ….. is it worth it?

Because this is an Irish rather than a Spanish deal, I am pretty confident that you will receive your Avios without too much of a fight.  To be fair, even the recent Groupon Spain / Iberia versions of this deal have been trouble-free for most people.

Picking up 2,000 Avios for 0.71p is a no-brainer.

In general, I am not keen on paying more than 0.75p per point.  I tend to average 1.15p when I redeem and I want a big margin between my ‘purchase’ and ‘sale’ costs.  That said, if you know you will get substantially above 1p per Avios when you redeem then it would be worth jumping in at the higher levels.

  • Ali says:

forgive my cynicism but could the delay in ability to redeem be timed to coincide with a potential devaluation on the horizon…?

    • Rob says:

No, this is genuinely down to card fraud.

      • shd says:

Well, that’s the official reason. Coincidentally it will help increase the % of voucher breakage, which will please management.

“Mr Cruz has been quoted as saying cutting costs is “now injected into the DNA” of British Airways”

        Just one more example?

    • Lady London says:

But coincidentally it does increase the % of ‘breakage’ I am getting really fed up with a certain other airline’s similar offers presenting with IT problems right from the beginning, I try again another 10 days later to redeem my groupon, their IT doesn’t function so I can;t do that, and by the time I remember to try again for a third time to get that airlines redemption page for the avios I have paid for to work, they’ve expired

Happened to me twice this year and I am not best pleased.

  • Sue says:

Do you have to have a separate groupon account to purchase avios on Iberia ? Every time I try this it won’t recognise my usual UK groupon log on and I cannot complete the transaction.
    Any advice appreciated.

    • Rob says:

Open a new Groupon account with a different email address – this also lets you use the HELLO15 code.

      • Mikeact says:

The way I did it was to delete my Groupn Spanish and UK versions , and then sign up to the Irish version….prior to this, Groupon kept bouncing back to my UK account.

  • Jennifer Mannion says:

I’ve got my Groupon voucher code and it tells me to go to a site called aviosvouchers.com to redeem.

There is the option of just putting my ba exec club number in there. Is that ok to to do that?

I never had to click anything to do with avios account when I bought them either.

    Thanks!

    • Rob says:

In theory, no – but very handy if it allow it. Remember that the voucher code is not meant to be active until 28th June.

    • Del says:

I assumed that if you used your BA Exec details then the offer would be invalid. There is the option on that site to enter your AER Account details (I just registered with AER) so hopefully it will work come June 28th?

  • Scott says:

has anyone experience problems signing up to aer club I keep getting “Your address could not be validated. Please make sure your details are correct.”

    • Neil says:

yes, I too can not sign-up to become a member saying my phone number does not match my country of residence…. and then just says the application can not be progressed….

  • John says:

    Rob

Groupon ie conditions demonstrate full confidence in Aerclub, which is nearly as hopeless as Gold Circle always was:

We do not accept missing transaction claims or questions about the 2,000, 4,000, 8,000, 12,000 20,000 or 35,000 Avios that you might buy through “Avios Aer Club” promotions.

We do not offer the 2,000, 4,000, 8,000, 12,000, 20,000 or 35,000 Avios (or any amount of Avios) that you may buy through the Groupon promotions.

You will receive a lower reward than the aforementioned when buying deals of 2,000, 4,000, 8,000, 12,000 20,000 or 35,000 Avios (or any amount of Avios).

    • Rob says:

I am on top of this with both Groupon and Avios – if they don’t post, I know the people to talk to. This is a major difference to the Spanish promo.

      • Lady London says:

Good news based on the performance of the Spanish promo so far this year. Fed up as I have lost my money and no chance to redeem after encountering IT problems in redeeming for no good reason and then finding the voucher had expired when I was able to try again.

        • the real harry1 says:

yep Paypal guarantee or chargeback are your friends – unfair conditions attached to offer if the IT doesn’t work. Go get it back, it wasn’t 6 years ago I take it?

        • Lady London says:

Thanks Harry I hadn’t thought of that. Actually they are the only two bad experience I have had with IB so far so I probably won’t follow up. It’s take a number of awful incompetent horrible experiences trying to get British Airways’s outsourced so-called Customer Services to fix something that is entirely British Airways’s fault, for me to take the orientation towards all British Airways problems evidenced in my other comment. So far IB hasn’t been that bad and for lack of time, I’ll probably put up with it and not pay them again for similar.

    • Del says:

Does this mean I have just wasted buying these Avios from Groupon?

      • Rob says:

No, if there is a problem I should be able to fix it as the relevant Avios people have been talking to me about this deal, which is how we knew about it in the first place.

    • Polly says:

Agree, aerxlub worse than useless. Just hope l don’t have to use them as an intermediary to move avios back and forth from IB. Gold circle was a nightmare..their staff still don’t know know anything bout aer club nor did they about GC. Nor do the dub lounges know the ba rules of access either. Unreal. Can you imagine trying to get your avios from an EI flight out of there into your BAEC. Won’t happen!

  • Mark says:

Make sure you use your Lloyds Avios card to make the purchase (or another 0% foreign transactions card). Paypal give you a horrendous exchange rate.

  • Victor says:

OT – need some guidance from experienced travelers
BA cancelled our flight (2 people) which we had booked using avios (RFS). They offered us an alternative flight which was actually the same flight 24h later. We needed to get back that day, so I chose to get a refund and made alternative arrangements.
Now I have received the avios back in my BAEC account, but not the £35 credit on my CC as expected. Should I chase BA for this (as it’s been more than a week) or did I misunderstand the T&Cs? I know that if I choose to cancel the RFS booking I get the avios back but get a £35 charge (offset by the original fee). However it seems unfair in this case for me to be charged £35 for THEIR cancellation – I did not actually cancel my original booking, I just decided to turn down their offer for their alternative flight 24h later!
So, am I entitled to get the £35 fee refunded or not?

    • Lady London says:

You are entitled to the whole lot back.

Hopefully you didn;t sign anything at the airport or make any other agreement as what you are actually entitled to as well, sounds like at least 250 euros under EU261 (google it). This depends on how long you were delayed to your final destination as well as how many miles’ distance the flight was. This is as well any cash you paid out for that part of your journey or the whole of your journey if it became useless due to British Airways’s delay. If your delay resulted as more than 2 hours before your departure you are also entitled to claim back reasonable accommodation, food/drink and transport and also comms expenses if they were caused by your delay.

You can’t claim for consequential losses but you may well qualify for all of the above.

Just google EU261 on here or flyertalk dot come and you will be in a different world.

      • Lady London says:

btw that’s 250 euros per person under EU261 if your delay and when you reached your final destination, qualify. As well as all your miles and any cash layout back over and above what I have said above.

      • Victor says:

Yes already got €500 back for the 2 of us with regards to the compensation for the cancellation under EU regulations.
I was specifically asking about the £35 RFS fee as I expected that to be refunded as well, which you’ve stated that it should be.
So I will chase BA for this.
        Thanks!

        • Lady London says:

Yes it should be refunded. Go get it. It;s part of what you paid so you are entitled to that £35 back. And all your miles as well.

Glad to hear you got your money except for the £35 cash element of your flight(s). To be fair to British Airways, though, they do usually say that cash part of any refund may arrive up to 7 days later. Make sure you chase it if it’s longer than that.

          Otherwise, well done.

  • Lady London says:

you should be seen/recorded to have requested your full compensation three times at least (phone, email, contact screen (keep a screenshot). If British Airways refuses or does not confirm payout within 8 weeks then just put your claim on moneyclaim dot gov dot uk. A small fee applies but you will get this back (and should request this is added to any settlement). Avoid accepting avios instead of cash – feeling on the street is they’re about to devalue.

Mechanical delay/problems with the plane/problems with incoming aircraft caused by weather/problems with staff for the plane turning up or similar, or bad weather if other flights to and from same-ish place are still taking off, is not an allowable reason for British Airways to refuse you compensation. It has to be totally unexpected, strike by lightning (but bird strikes qualified recently) Act of God or similar that caused you not to be able to take your booked flight. Whatever an airline might try to tell you. Again, Google and you will see.
