Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

ENDS TONIGHT: Buy up to 84,000 cheap Avios points, from 0.7p, via Groupon Ireland

It’s back! You can buy cheap Avios points – from 0.71p – simply by heading over to Groupon.

The link for the deal is here.

This time there is a fundamental change to the offer, and it is for the better.  It is being run by Aer Lingus Aer Club, not Iberia, and via Groupon Ireland, not Groupon Spain.  This means that, if you have a problem receiving your voucher code, your chance of getting it resolved as a non-Spanish speaker is now much improved.

I am also in touch with the people at Avios who are looking after this offer, so if there are any problems with missing codes we should be able to resolve them.

Note that, whilst you need to buy now, you won’t receive your Avios until 28th June.  There have apparently been fraud issues with the Iberia version of this offer and a delay is being put in place in case of problems with payment cards.

This is a now an Aer Club deal.  This means that you need an Aer Club Avios account (easily fixed by going to aerlingus.com if you don’t have one).

In the past, an avios.com would double-up as an Aer Club account.  This is no longer an option as all avios.com accounts are being closed.  Even if you have an avios.com account, you need to open an Aer Club account.   During the sign-up process, when you are asked if you have an Avios account already, say ‘No’.

If the Aer Club website is refuses to accept your application form, try removing the space from your post code and, when formatting your mobile number, put the first two numbers in the first box and the rest in the 2nd box.

When your Avios have arrived in your Aer Club account, you can move them across to your British Airways Executive Club account by using the ‘Combine Your Avios’ feature on avios.com or ba.com.

What do the Avios cost?

There are five price levels- the 2,000 Avios deal is the cheapest.

If you do not use an existing groupon.ie account and open a new one, you can use code HELLO15 to save a further 15% (capped at €20).

2,000 Avios = €19 (£16.71) – 15% with HELLO15 =  0.71p    SOLD OUT

4,000 Avios = €59 (£51.91) – 15% with HELLO15 = 1.10p   SOLD OUT

8,000 Avios = €99 (£87.10) – 15% with HELLO15 = 0.93p

15,000 Avios = €189 (£166.28) – €20 with HELLO15 = 0.99p

20,000 Avios = €249 (£219.12) – €20 with HELLO15 = 1.00p

35,000 Avios = €439 (£386.32) – €20 with HELLO15 = 1.05p

You can buy a maximum of ONE of each remaining package, which means 84,000 78,000 Avios in total.  If you buy multiple packages, remember that the HELLO15 discount is capped at €20 per order and not per package.

Even if you make a separate Groupon purchase for more codes to take you beyond 84,000 78,000 Avios, you will not be allowed to apply them to your Aer Club account – although obviously you could buy for family members and add the codes to their Aer Club account.

If you do not use a 0% payment card, remember to factor in the 3% FX fee to the prices shown above.

What happens next?

You will be emailed a voucher code.  This must be redeemed at aviosvouchers.com.

The voucher will only be accepted for redemption into an Aer Club account, not an Iberia or British Airways account.

You can only redeem your voucher between 28th June and 28th July.  Do NOT buy if you need the Avios immediately.

The big question ….. is it worth it?

Because this is an Irish rather than a Spanish deal, I am pretty confident that you will receive your Avios without too much of a fight.  To be fair, even the recent Groupon Spain / Iberia versions of this deal have been trouble-free for most people.

Picking up 2,000 Avios for 0.71p is a no-brainer.

In general, I am not keen on paying more than 0.75p per point.  I tend to average 1.15p when I redeem and I want a big margin between my ‘purchase’ and ‘sale’ costs.  That said, if you know you will get substantially above 1p per Avios when you redeem then it would be worth jumping in at the higher levels.

  • Craig says:

What will happen to my existing AerClub account that is linked to my Avios account when Avios closes?

    • Rob says:

It remains and you will still use the avios.com site to manage it. Only Avios accounts not linked to Aer Lingus or Vueling are being closed.

      • Craig says:

Thanks Rob, so I’ll be able to use this groupon through the Avios site into an AerClub account, then CMA to BAEC?

  • Karen Robertson says:

Not letting me sign up to AerClub either.

    • Rob says:

Annoying. Worked fine a few days ago as I did it as part of that article I wrote on how to get around the avios.com closure.

  • ADS says:

not sure if they’ve just added it – but in the “purchase conditions” it says “local purchases” twice – which implies that if you purchase from the UK you won’t get the points.

also is say “You will receive a lower reward than the aforementioned when buying deals of 2,000, 4,000, 8,000, 12,000 20,000 or 35,000 Avios (or any amount of Avios)” without actually saying how much lower.

    • Brian W says:

Surely still worth trying if you are buying anyway! You never know, may end up with some additional Avios for a simple click!

  • ADS says:

Rob – putting 84,000 avios and 0.71p together in the title is misleading.

if anybody was to buy the full 84,000 it would be more like 1.08p per Avios.

    • Rob says:

Given that you have a blog, the complexity of writing concise but at the same time informative headlines is one you are presumably aware of!

      • S says:

Replace ‘from 0.71p’ with ‘for 0.71 to 1.08p’. Simple and concise.

P.S. Noticed a higher than usual amount of smug replies from you lately 😉

        • Lady London says:

Glad you noticed @S that’s why we’re all here

  • JamesR says:

O/T – I recently just finished a new Amex gold spending bonus. However I made it past the spending target 1 day before the deadline. The payment was still saying ‘processing’ until the day after the deadline finished. It’s gone through now but my points haven’t shown up yet.. am I still entitled to them? Do I have to speak to Amex or will they eventually arrive?

    • Peter K says:

Give it a few days but if they don’t arrive then chase it. In future I’d bring forward some spending like buying gift cards for supermarkets you already shop at.

  • Alex says:

OT – I’m looking to fly from SA (CPT or JNB) to Kigali, Rwanda, but it’s looking even more expensive than London-Kigali! Anyone know of a carrier that I can use points with? Or alternative suggestions?
    Thanks!

    • Marcw says:

Kenya airways – Flying Blue??? It’s an Amex transfer 1:1. I think you should also be able to redeem StarAlliance miles flying with Ethiopian.

    • shd says:

      With Star Alliance:

Lifemiles can get you a seat on Ethiopian (CPT-ADD-KGL) for 17.5k + $55 in tax, one-way in Economy or 33k + $55 in tax, one-way in Business. If you buy Lifemiles in a 241 sale I think they can be as low as ~1.2p each, I bought ages ago.

I tried Krisflyer/Singapore and couldn’t find any availabilty with Ethiopian, even on the dates where Lifemiles can see it. Very odd.

      • Sundar says:

I enquired about Lifemiles with Rob sometime back – he hadn’t liked it because of the arbitrary devaluation that can happen anytime without much notice.
@Shd- How many years have you had the miles valid ? Presumably bought in a sale…

        • shd says:

Checking back, looks like I first bought Lifemiles in 2012.

It’s not great when schemes change their rules overnight, but BA has form here too (remember free redemption changes for Golds – IIRC that disappeared with no notice?)

I find it’s useful to have redemption opportunities with Star Alliance as well as OneWorld. I credit the occasional car rental to extend the validity….

      • Alexander says:

        Thanks both!

  • Reeferman says:

O/T. “Combine My Avios” seems to be working again – have just made a couple of transfers between Avios and BA

  • toia says:

    Thanks for the tip!!
In your article, you write During the sign-up process, when you are asked if you have an Avios account already, say ‘No’.
    Could you explain further please?

    • Rob says:

If you say ‘yes’ then you are forced to use your existing avios.com account. However, that is about to be closed by Avios so that would be a bad move!

Say ‘no’ and you are given a brand new avios.com account which will NOT be closed by Avios because it is linked to Aer Club.

      • David says:

In my experience, it transforms your existing avios travel rewards programme acount into an aerclub account.

You can see that there after when logged in.

        • Rob says:

Comments from other readers in the past suggested otherwise. If it does work – and you see the Aer Club banner under Your Account – then that’s great.

        • David says:

My sample size is pretty good.

I think the reports otherwise are confusion about what an AerClub account looks like – people expecting it to be 100% based at aerlingus.com, etc. Rather than the halfway house that is intended (aerlingus.com – for core membership details, avios.com for points).

        • Lady London says:

Unfortunately my Avios account was snaffled by Aer Club without recourse to me (I definitely didn’t give my permission) a few months back. A pretty poor show by Avios I think.

      • Sergey says:

I have connected my Avios account to AerClub previously and it seems fine – just logged in to it from AerLingus website. No idea though how to transfer points from it to BAEC.

        • David says:

@Sergey – login at Avios.com it is an avios.com platform account. That will offer combine my avios functionality.
Or, if pulling/pushing them across from the BAEC side, select avios.com as the acount type (again, it is an avios.com platform account – that is part of AerClub, it is only the avios.com platofmr accounts that are part of the basic ‘avios travel rewards programme’ (i.e. not linked to aerclub or vueling club) which are closing.

    • Ian says:

Hi – anyone know if theres a problem registering. Have tried several times now and it just comes up “Unfortunately we are unable to complete your registration”
