How to move Avios from Britsh Airways to Iberia (and vice versa)

This is your step by step to moving Avios points from British Airways Executive Club to Iberia Plus, or vice versa.  It is a process that is far more difficult than it should be.

The migration from Avios Travel Rewards Programme to British Airways Executive Club is underway.  The first batch of avios.com accounts have already been closed and the rest will be done over the next couple of months.

One common question that comes up is this:

“When my Avios Travel Rewards Programme account is closed, how will I be able to move Avios from British Airways Executive Club to Iberia Plus?  ‘Combine My Avios’ appears to be permanently broken when you try to go directly from BA to Iberia or vice versa.”

The good news is that you are not doomed to pay the price for Avios’s IT failure.

If you want to move Avios between BA and Iberia in the future, you will need to open an Aer Lingus Aer Club or Vueling Club account.  The reason this works is that both of these schemes use the avios.com IT platform and you can use it as a conduit between British Airways Executive Club and Iberia Plus.

Here is a worked example using Aer Lingus Aer Club, although Vueling Club works the same way:

Visit the Aer Lingus website here and click on ‘Join Aer Club’ under the Aer Club dropdown menu

Fill in your name and email, using the same email address you use for BA Executive Club and Iberia Plus

You will be asked if you have an Avios account.  Say ‘No’.

Fill in your address – again, this needs to match your BA and Iberia details

Create a username and password to use on avios.com – use a non-alphanumeric character even though it is not required

(Aer Club and avios.com do not have the same requirements for what must be included in your password.  This is despite the fact that you will be logging into both websites using the same details.  Your Aer Club password will be rejected by avios.com unless you include a non-alphanumeric character.)

You need to use matching details from your Iberia and BA accounts because that it is the only way to pass the ‘Combine My Avios’ security checks.

So …. my Aer Club account is now happily open:

Off I go to the avios.com website and I log-in by using my new Aer Club details.  Under ‘My Account’ it confirms that this is an Aer Club balance:

And I can now do a test transfer.  I pull in 1000 Avios from my British Airways Executive Club account using ‘Transfer Avios to / from British Airways or Iberia’ under ‘Your Account’:

…. and then I send them off to Iberia Plus, where they arrived immediately:

I then reversed the process and was able to get the Avios back into my British Airways account without any trouble.

So, good news.  Despite the closure of the Avios Travel Rewards Programme, you can still move Avios from British Airways to Iberia by opening an Aer Club or Vueling Club account and logging in to avios.com with those details.

  • xcalx says:

Never had a problem transferring from 14 accounts BA to IB All sole person accounts all with exact matching details. I wonder if the problem others have is down to the Spanish surname not filled in correctly

    • the real harry1 says:

The problem has typically been transferring IB—>BAEC, ie the other way. A Household BAEC a/c really screws things up but the above looks a good workaround.

  • McMilesCollector says:

I thought you could use combine my avoid directly from Iberia plus to BAEC – you can certainly get to the combine my avios page from Iberia? AM I missing something here that is why the suggestion to via Vueling / Are Club?

I did try moving Avios from Iberia to BA but could not the other day and was told that this was because I had a Household account. Solution suggested was to disband the household account, move the avoid and then re-form the household account – does anyone know if there are problems or risks with undoing a household account on BAEC?

    Thanks for any help

    • John says:

Yes, you answered your own question (in your first paragraph) in your second paragraph. This article gives a solution without needing to disband the household.

      • the real harry1 says:

Not that disbanding the BA HHA is that difficult. I did that a couple of years ago then reformed it to include just myself & the kids a few days later, I kept my wife out of it. There was no need to wait 6 months before reforming the HHA.

My wife after that could transfer IB—>BAEC but as head of HHA I couldn’t do that (never tried on the phone, though – which sounds like a decent option if you don’t fancy following the HFP workaround & can spare the waiting time to get through 🙂 ), though as xcalx also said, me transferring BAEC—>IB was never a problem.

Shame BAEC doesn’t have Chat – avios.com Chat is brilliant, I’ve found.

        • Mikeact says:

Agreed, chat has been excellent, and I’ve saved every one of them for reference…one or two of them feel like personal friends, so much so that I received a phone call from one of them, apologising for getting cut off in the middle of a specific, one off query they were trying to sort out for me. They will all be sorely missed.

  • Andrew says:

I have in the past called BA who arranged the transfer to Iberia . Is it not possible to still telephone BA to ask them to make the transfer ?

  • RichS says:

I keep getting “Combine my avios is not available at the moment” both on avios.com and BA website.

  • Alan says:

I was given the option on the ba website to transfer ba to ib and visa versa. I keep my avios in my aerclub account, what happens when avios.com closes, do my points stay in my aerclub account? Thanks

  • PAL says:

I normally just ring BAEC and they can also transfer…

  • Peter says:

What will happen to existing Lloyd’s avios upgrade vouchers? I have one already and am not far off hitting the spend for another. Given Lloyd’s is also stopping the card – will they still honour giving a voucher at 7k and even if they do, will there even still be a voucher for them to give come closure of avios?!

    • Alan says:

See FAQs they sent out, no impact on voucher earnings or use. No closure date yet announced.

  • Big Dave says:

in my situation I have an aerlingus avios account already which was just a front end for my avios uk account, then I ended up with a vueling avios account but in a different email and I cannot change it….
