How to move Avios from Britsh Airways to Iberia (and vice versa)

This is your step by step to moving Avios points from British Airways Executive Club to Iberia Plus, or vice versa.  It is a process that is far more difficult than it should be.

The migration from Avios Travel Rewards Programme to British Airways Executive Club is underway.  The first batch of avios.com accounts have already been closed and the rest will be done over the next couple of months.

One common question that comes up is this:

“When my Avios Travel Rewards Programme account is closed, how will I be able to move Avios from British Airways Executive Club to Iberia Plus?  ‘Combine My Avios’ appears to be permanently broken when you try to go directly from BA to Iberia or vice versa.”

The good news is that you are not doomed to pay the price for Avios’s IT failure.

If you want to move Avios between BA and Iberia in the future, you will need to open an Aer Lingus Aer Club or Vueling Club account.  The reason this works is that both of these schemes use the avios.com IT platform and you can use it as a conduit between British Airways Executive Club and Iberia Plus.

Here is a worked example using Aer Lingus Aer Club, although Vueling Club works the same way:

Visit the Aer Lingus website here and click on ‘Join Aer Club’ under the Aer Club dropdown menu

Fill in your name and email, using the same email address you use for BA Executive Club and Iberia Plus

You will be asked if you have an Avios account.  Say ‘No’.

Fill in your address – again, this needs to match your BA and Iberia details

Create a username and password to use on avios.com – use a non-alphanumeric character even though it is not required

(Aer Club and avios.com do not have the same requirements for what must be included in your password.  This is despite the fact that you will be logging into both websites using the same details.  Your Aer Club password will be rejected by avios.com unless you include a non-alphanumeric character.)

You need to use matching details from your Iberia and BA accounts because that it is the only way to pass the ‘Combine My Avios’ security checks.

So …. my Aer Club account is now happily open:

Off I go to the avios.com website and I log-in by using my new Aer Club details.  Under ‘My Account’ it confirms that this is an Aer Club balance:

And I can now do a test transfer.  I pull in 1000 Avios from my British Airways Executive Club account using ‘Transfer Avios to / from British Airways or Iberia’ under ‘Your Account’:

…. and then I send them off to Iberia Plus, where they arrived immediately:

I then reversed the process and was able to get the Avios back into my British Airways account without any trouble.

So, good news.  Despite the closure of the Avios Travel Rewards Programme, you can still move Avios from British Airways to Iberia by opening an Aer Club or Vueling Club account and logging in to avios.com with those details.

What happens to the avios we earn from our Lloyds avios cards? Previously went into the avios account. Will they now somehow go into my BA account? Thanks

  • palcsaky says:

Any advice what to do when whilst combining Avios they disappeared from Iberia but failed to arrive at BAEC?

    • the real harry1 says:

You’ll have to make contact with IB, I guess – not the easiest of jobs but you could try plata@iberia.es who responded quickly to me (and no, I don’t hold status with IB, just grabbed their email address).

I had a slight heart attack when transferring over my wife’s points avios.com—>BAEC. They disappeared from avios.com and never appeared at BAEC. And she has quite a few points 🙂

That was easy enough to get reinstated & successfully transferred via Chat, though. I don’t think IB has yet opened up a Chat facility.

      • The Original Nick says:

Once again Harry, welcome back. This happened to me too when transferring quite a lot from BAEC to Avios. BAEC had to reinstate them for me as they were withdrawn from BAEC accounts not Avios.

  • Nick says:

I’m curious to know where the avios upgrade vouchers will land too when earned.

    • Steve says:

They said this will go on your BAEC account. Not sure where you will see it but it should be there.

      • Anna says:

Is this not going to depend on Lloyds sending it to BAEC though? It’s been hard enough for them to send anything to avios.com for many of us!

  • Simon Cross says:

I already have an Aer Club account which I opened some time ago when there was a promotion. I answered “yes” when asked if I had an avios.co account and also my password does not contain a non alpha numeric character.

What should I do? What can I do?

    • Steve says:

Should be fine you just need to make sure the details match. I linked my account to Vueling Club (is a lot easier than Aer Club as you just need to log in to Vueling.com and tick a box.) Then I just updated my details on BA and Iberia to match the Vueling Account and could move them.

  • Steve says:

According to info from Avois any outstanding points will go to BA if you haven’t registered with Vueling or Aer Lingus or to your same account if you have.

  • Oli says:

Any idea what will happen to Avios to be earnt from Flybe flights not yet flown but already booked?

    • the real harry1 says:

The obvious reply is that nobody ever gets Flybe Avios awarded anyway 🙂

Flybe seems to be a one way street, ie fine for redemptions on Avios but useless for eaning points.

      • Steve M says:

I have just completed the manual transfer of Avios to BAEC for myself and my wife. Both went through seamlessly and to my surprise there was an odd number of points from September which I didn’t recognise. I was also just about to book another Flybe flight and when I went on the Flybe website I realised that the “JustFly” points in the Avios account were in fact Flybe points. I have no idea if it was the correct amount but they did post in to both accounts.

  • the real harry1 says:

There’s one big risk in the forced avios.com—>BAEC transfer – hopefully doesn’t apply to anybody here. If your BAEC points a/c is inactive and you transfer in points from avios.com, they may very well disappear and you might have a helluva job forcing their reinstatement. There was somebody over on FT who transferred over 10,000 Avios like this, the points disappeared because of no activity on the BAEC a/c for 3 years. They requested reinstatement and got told tough, points lost.

Obviously in that situation you’d appeal it higher until common sense prevailed at avios.com/ BAEC – avios.com have guaranteed that points won’t be lost by the forced transfer.

To avoid the hassle, just make sure your BAEC has earned a point in the last 3 years.

  • TripRep says:

Very useful tip, logged into my AerClub a/c last night and couldn’t see how to transfer from there.

In actual fact my Avios & AerClub a/c’s (separate login details) have now been linked together.

A normal transfer from my Avios a/c to BAEC worked fine, left 1 point in there so that it was not shut down immediately.

I too am concerned about what happens with Lloyds points and upgrade voucher.
