My review of the excellent Berlin Marriott hotel

This is my review of the Berlin Marriott hotel and my experience there as a new Marriott Rewards Gold member.

The hotel website is here.

It is now 18 months since Marriott allowed you to status match from Starwood Preferred Guest and vice versa.  This followed the purchase of Starwood by Marriott back in 2015.

This was an astonishingly good result for American Express Platinum holders who get free Starwood Preferred Guest Gold status.

Berlin Marriott review

Suddenly, overnight, we all got Marriott Rewards Gold.  And Marriott Rewards Gold is good.

The reason it is good is that Marriott Rewards Gold is very tough to earn.  You can earn top tier status in some hotel programmes for fewer nights than you need to earn mid-tier Marriott Gold.  The standard qualification is 50 nights which I’m sure you’ll agree is aggressive for ‘mid tier’ status.

Because it is tough to earn, the benefits – at the right hotels – are worth having:

25% bonus points

high speed internet access

room upgrade

guaranteed 4pm check-out (except at resort and convention hotels)

guaranteed lounge access, or free continental breakfast if no lounge is available (except at resort properties)

My only Marriott stay last year was at the JW Marriott in Venice which I reviewed on a previous visit in 2016.  Unfortunately this shows Marriott Rewards at its worst.  The Venice hotel is classed as a ‘resort’ and therefore the breakfast and late check-out benefits don’t apply.  Venice is also very unwilling to give free upgrades, albeit they are very keen to sell you one.  This was frustrating, especially given our daily breakfast bill for four people which would otherwise have been comped.

Last week, at the Berlin Marriott hotel, I finally put my Marriott Rewards Gold status to proper use.  I was on a rewards stay as cash rates were through the roof due to the ITB travel show, which is also why I was there.  My Gold card got me access to the excellent executive lounge and the 2.30pm late check-out I needed to meet my 5pm flight.

My review of the Berlin Marriott hotel

This is not a full review because I had a very busy schedule and didn’t see much of it.  I should say, though, that Berlin Marriott is – without a doubt – the poshest Marriott hotel I have ever stayed at.  No contest.

It is directly behind The Ritz-Carlton in Potsdamer Platz, also operated by Marriott.  I have stayed at The Ritz-Carlton twice in the past but, due to the modern decor, I actually preferred the Marriott.

Taxis are cheap in Berlin and you won’t pay more than €25 from Tegel Airport.  There is no direct subway line so a taxi is the best option unless you want to try the bus network.

Getting around from the Berlin Marriott is a dream.  Many places are walkable and you have the S-Bahn, U-Bahn and Potsdamer Platz mainline trains literally outside the door.  As an entirely new-build office and entertainment area post 1989 you are surrounded by shops and restaurants.  It has always been my preferred area to stay (I can also recommend the Grand Hyatt) and if you want historical connections, the wall used to run directly through the hotel site.

My room

I didn’t get the room originally blocked for me due to arriving early so I don’t know if I was meant to be upgraded or not.  I was offered a room ‘now’ or a better room ‘later’ and I went for ‘now’.  I was so pleased with what I got that I didn’t bother trying to swap.  As none of the website pictures look like my room, it is difficult to tell if I stayed in the entry level Deluxe I booked or got upgraded to a (3 sq m larger) Superior.

I was on the 10th floor which is also where the lounge is, which was very handy.  Here is the view down into the lobby!

Berlin Marriott lobby review

There was something very comforting about this hotel.  It is difficult to put my finger on exactly why, but everything clicked.  My room was suitably large and well furnished, the staff were welcoming, the public areas were impressive and the executive lounge clearly was not running under budgetary constraints!

Berlin Marriott review bedroom

I think one important aspect was that, whilst most rectangular hotel rooms have the windows on the short end, Berlin Marriott – at least in my room – has windows along the long side.  This means that the room is filled with light and you are looking out when you sit on the bed.

Berlin Marriott review bedroom

There was a decent sized desk as you can see in the first picture.  As is usual with European hotels there was no overhead lighting so you had to do what you could with the desk, bed, floor and reading lamps.

Berlin Marriott review bathroom

Toiletries were from Acca Kappa which is a cut above average.  The bathroom was very spacious – there was no bath but the shower was huge and had rainfall and standard options.  It was only a single sink which was fine for me on my own but perhaps a curious ommission.

Berlin Marriott review view

The view from the window was nothing exciting but not ugly either.

The Berlin Marriott executive lounge

This is how the lounge works.  These are very impressive opening hours compared to most hotel lounges:

  • Lounge opens at 6.00
  • Breakfast from 6.30 to 11.00 (7.00 to 11.00 at weekends)
  • Sweet snacks from 12.00 to 17.00
  • Hot and cold buffet from 17.30 to 20.30 (wine, prosecco and cheese available until 23.00)
  • Lounge closes at midnight

Children are allowed but under 14’s must be accompanied by an adult.  You cannot opt for breakfast in the restaurant instead of using the lounge – you will be charged the €32 breakfast fee if you do.

Berlin Marriott executive lounge

It is a large space – pictured below is another seating area not shown in the main picture.  I don’t think these pictures do full justice to how pleasant I found it.

Berlin Marriott executive lounge review

Here are some of the cold options available in the evening.  There are also a lot of desserts, not pictured.

Berlin Marriott executive lounge food

There are also four hot items, which seem to be a soup, a pasta option, a meat option and a potato variant.

Berlin Marriott executive lounge hot food review

Wine and prosecco is freely available and there is a fridge of beer and soft drinks too:

Berlin Marriott executive lounge drinks review

It was all very impressive and I was perfectly happy to eat here on both evenings.  There was enough available to constitute a full meal.  Breakfast was also good with various hot items alongside the usual pastries, cereals, juices etc.

The staff were excellent, especially after I managed to smash my prosecco glass …….

Leisure options

There is a swimming pool which I didn’t use but which looks good.  It is open from 6am to 11pm so you really have no excuse as long as you brought your costume.  This is a stock photo:

Berlin Marriott pool review

Conclusion

The Berlin Marriott offers a relaxing upmarket environment with no weak links.  I would have swapped the pile of USA Today in the lounge for The (London) Times (The New York Times was also available) but that is the full extent of my criticism over two nights.

If every Marriott-branded hotel was as good as this they would be unstoppable.  The truth is that Berlin is probably in the top five globally.

I strongly recommend the Berlin Marriott, especially if you now have a Marriott Rewards Gold card.  It is a lovely hotel in a great location and guaranteed access to the excellent executive lounge is the icing on the strudel.

If you don’t have Marriott Rewards Gold but would like it, I recommend getting an American Express Platinum charge card for a few months.  You can cancel at any point for a pro-rata fee refund and your hotel statuses will be retained until the end of your membership year.  Once your Starwood Preferred Guest Gold membership is active, you can do an instant match online to Marriott Rewards Gold.  You will also get Hilton Honors Gold, Radisson Rewards Gold, Melia Rewards Gold and Shangri-La Jade status.  My full review of Amex Platinum is here.

Currently in the JW Marriott Singapore, and courtesy of Amex Platinum and hence Marriott Gold, upgraded to lounge room, automatically given 4pm check out, but even better, use of all lounge facilities until departure at around 23.30. Desk staff apparently offer this by default as most return Europe flights are around midnight +. Beautiful hotel, great location, and given price of drinks in most of Singapore, the 17.30 to 21.30 ‘cocktails in the lounge’ could save you a small fortune depending on your consumption. Excellent food offerings too, both breakfast and evening, including chef on hand for eggs etc in the morning, and noodles etc in evening. Singapore A380 business back home via Swiss open jaw ticket from their sale too.
Thanks so much, would have missed nearly all of this without HfP!

    • Pangolin says:

Yeah, it’s a great place, only let down by the cold swimming pool that doesn’t get any sun (major design flaw there).

I also prefer the location to other places which are in the heart of downtown, as it’s close to Marina Bay and the Botanic Gardens.

BTW, the chef does noodles for breakfast too!

      • Paul says:

I think cold might be overstating it. Not hot I’ll grant you, but warmer than the open to the sun pool in Da Nang last week. Besides, after a few hours out in the humidity, anything properly wet is a blessing. Also a nice breeze on the 18th floor…

    • Adrian says:

Good to know, thank you. I’m there in 3 weeks time using my AmEx Marriott gold status 5 for 4 reward nights (from SPG AmEx cards) and a bargain QR Sofia-SIN fare. all thanks to Rob and FT!

    • Shane B says:

I was at the Berlin Marriott last weekend too, using my Marriott Gold match. Didn’t bump into Rob, but can confirm hotel was very nice. Despite being on a BA Flight and Hotel, got free upgrade, and access to the Exec Lounge on the morning I checked in. It was also my birthday during the stay, and they left a little birthday cake and message in my room. Nice touch!

  • JoeyJoJo says:

    OT:

Am I going mad? I thought Virgin Atlantic was an Amex rewards travel transfer partner? In other words didn’t you used to be able to transfer Amex points to virgin?

    • JPa says:

      You can.

      • JoeyJoJo says:

Go and have a look for me. I’ve tried 3 different browsers.

        • JoeyJoJo says:

Never mind. The loud speaker announcer doubery at the top says they are temporarily unavailable. Panic over.

        • Grondair says:

I tried and failed to do this yesterday. Called Amex and they were able to transfer the points across. Appeared in my Virgin account immediately.

    • Rob says:

Still can but Amex has been doing IT work. Delta and Emirates also missing at times.

  • Wz says:

Are the lounge/food offerings available everyday (weekends) or are there limitations like in the US Marriott lounges?

  • Lewis King says:

    Interesting report, thanks Rob.

We stayed at the JW in Juhu Beach, Mumbai and had accesss to the lounge too. I think it’s the best lounge I’ve been to; staff were incredibly attentive (getting to know our orders over the week and serving us drinks), the food was great and varied daily and the view was pretty spectacular!

  • Nigel says:

How do you know if a Marriott or Ritz Carlton is classified as a “resort”? Its clearly nothing to do with beaches!
Secondly, my Marriott Gold is actually a Ritz Carlton gold card – are they interchangeable? Can you get Ritz Carlton lounge access with an RC gold card as well as a Marriott gold card? Can you get Marriott lounge access (where it exists) with a RC gokd card?
    Anyone know?

    • Alan says:

JW Marriott is the reward brand.
All of those hotels are classified as resorts for purposes of Marriott reward benefits.

      • Alan says:

        Typo- should read “resort brand”

      • Ziggy says:

        That’s simply not true.

I’ve stayed at any number of JW properties which are not classified as resorts and where full MR benefits are provided.

      • Pangolin says:

JW Marriott is nothing specifically to do with resorts or rewards. I think you’re getting things mixed up.

    • Peter K says:

I find the easiest way is to go to the find a hotel world map bit and click on the resorts tab, which then lists all the resorts.
Or, click all the other tabs and NOT the resorts one to show all the ones that are not resorts. A bit annoying but the easiest way that I’ve found.

    • Genghis says:

No lounge access at RC with Marriott Gold / Plat.

    • RIccatti says:

JW Marriott DOES’T automatically mean a resort hotel. Marriott Plat/Gold benefits apply.

Marriott resort property would normally have “Resort” as part of their name. I have also noticed that 11 Thailand Marriotts classified themselves as resorts even if they are in city-like places of Pattaya and Phuket.

Achieving Marriott Platinum is excruciating, and then Marriott Resort properties not giving you breakfast — often means no reason to stay with them.

  • Wally1976 says:

My wife and I found the Marriott Budapest similarly excellent. The executive lounge didn’t offer quite the spread Rob reports from Berlin but had fantastic views over the Danube (as did the suite we were upgraded to on a standard redemption) and an outdoor terrace. Also as gold members we were able to have breakfast in either the lounge or the restaurant.

I’ll be adding Berlin to our list to visit. Which other Marriott’s are regarded amongst the best?

  • Mr(s) Entitled says:

I applied for SPG status via Amex about 3wks ago with the intention of matching to Marriott. I am still awaiting details from SPG. Is this normal or do I have to chase?

    • Paul says:

My SPG status was upgraded to Gold within 2 days of applying via Amex Platinum. Never received any email or other notification from SPG. Check your account!

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Thanks Paul. Followed your advice and now have my SPG status and Marriott.

  • TripRep says:

Good review Rob, nice to see you feature the swimming pool, I prefer places that have them.

Marriott Gold is pretty hard to achieve, and yet v similar benefits to Hilton Honors. Yep Amex Platinum would be a good move. Bit surprised at the €32 for breakfast in the main restaurant that’s a similar tactic to US hotels. Decent looking exec lounge. I find that some exec lounges are so nice you they potentially stop you from seeing more of a city on an evening. Definitely done that in Reykjavik and Prague

Appreciate the travel logistics and airport taxi info, visiting there later this summer.

Don’t suppose you got to poke around the nearby Hilton Berlin? That’s where I’ve booked, tempted to pay ££ for an upgrade offer to try and secure a suite.
    https://tinyurl.com/Berlin-Suites

Happy to give some feedback on it as a comparison if you (or others) want.?

    • Mr Dee says:

Where is the fun in paying for the upgrade 🙂

      • TripRep says:

Fair point, but it’s a very busy time so as good, might not automatically get it free for access to Exec Lounge.

Had good results with the standby offers previously, I might drop them an email.

Mr Entitled – thanks for that, it did look good. Was tempted by the WA but the Hilton is more central.

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Stayed here Dec 2016. It’s a really good Hilton with an excellent lounge. Easily on a par with that reviewed above. Ability to take a full breakfast in the restaurant as a Gold would still swing it for me.

    • John says:

I didn’t get to go to the Hilton Reykjavik lounge as the service ended at 7pm (just after I arrived from my tour) and it closes completely at 9pm.

At the right time of year it is still bright after 9pm (and at other times it looks like “evening” all day long) so why would that have stopped you from seeing the city in the evening?

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

I dont recall it closing when I stayed there in Oct. The beer fridge got locked, but hot drinks, soft drinks, snacks etc. remained.

      • Leo says:

I think the Hilton in Reykjavik is in the middle of nowhere competitively speaking so can understand to a degree – I wouldn’t stay there based on location. Hilton Berlin is very good. Strong lounge which offers cake in the afternoon and in my opinion a better breakfast experience than the mass catering of the restaurant. In contrast to Iceland the Berlin Hilton has a fab location.

        • Leo says:

As hotel was full no diamond upgrade available so they let me drink anything in the mini-bar for the 3 nights there instead – and yes it was re-stocked.

        • Evan says:

          Comparatively*

      • TripRep says:

It was March -7C, windy and snowing.

The Hilton Reykjavik lounge had a fire, hot food and free alcohol, both very welcome after driving all day and visiting waterfalls and icebergs.

    • Susan says:

Recently back from Hilton Berlin. Was very happy to have chosen there rather than WA – it depends what you are there for but we found the location much nicer for touristing as it was easy walking to Museum Island / Alexanderplatz / Brandenburg Gate / Potsdammer Platz and there was a good choice of local restaurants. Hotel itself was clean, friendly, well equipped etc We’d booked a deluxe (IIRC) and got upgraded to same room type but with lounge access. This was in the middle of the Berlin Film Festival and the hotel did seem quite full although not over-crowded. Pool was a bit small for dedicated laps swimming but doable when not busy. Lounge was fine, not quite as extensive a spread as the Marriot (or some other Hiltons to be fair) but good breakfast and evening was perfectly adequate for aperitif / light supper. We tried the main breakfast one morning which had a much wider selection but it was a bit of a zoo so we went back to the lounge subsequently. Overall I would happily book Hilton Berlin again with lounge access.

      • TripRep says:

Hi Susan – that’s really great info, very helpful and kind of you, thanks.

I really like having a pool to unwind the legs when walking round visiting a city. Like to nip in there pre-dinner and/or pre-breakfast so might time it well hopefully quiet times then.

    • jason says:

We got an upgraded to KING CORNER SUITE DOME VIEW with Diamond last year with a very polite email, arrived early and we had breakfast on arrival in the lounge!

Location is excellent, i would highly recommend
