If you’ve got a bit of spare time over the next few weeks, you could take advantage of a new Virgin Atlantic promotion for 40% off redemption flights from London to Miami.

Flights in all classes are reduced by 40%:

Economy – 7500 miles each way

Premium Economy – 15000 miles each way

Upper Class – 28500 miles each way

Full taxes and charges will apply.

The travel window is very short – you must fly between 14th February and 14th March.

If you return after 14th March, you will still get the discount on the outbound flight but the return will be charged at full price.

To maximise your miles when paying the taxes, your best bet is one of the two Virgin Atlantic Reward credit cards. These earn double miles (3 per £1 on the paid card or 1.5 per £1 on the free card) when you book at virginatlantic.com or via Virgin Holidays. Another option is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers double points – 2 per £1 – when you book flight tickets directly with an airline.

How are Virgin dealing with infant redemptions these days? Last time I tried to use some miles in Upper Class it was a non-starter with our 6 month old.

    It is still 10% of full fare for infants and they cannot be booked on miles redemption. I tried for Cancun route and ended up booking BA finally.

  paid £250 in September which sounds about right based on a £2.5k upper class ticket to Miami. Only problem is whilst our tickets can be easily cancelled and miles returned for £25 change fee, the infant ticket is non refundable

  I have flown LHR-MIA with them couple of weeks ago. They were giving away 75 return economy tickets for £50. Outbound had to be taken next day, and return 2 days later.
  There were only 76 people on the outbound on the A330.
  Return was nearly full in economy, but they were offering upgrades to UC for ~£900.

Some availability on my preferred dates, haven’t been to Miami for almost 30 years! Is it recommended? When we in Orlando last year we spoke to a few families who drove down and hated it. Hotels look to be pricey, Im looking at 6 nights.

  We were there last April for 3 nights pre cruise (stayed at the Cavalier hotel on Ocean drive lovely hotel) Eating out is very expensive. We were $119 for one starter, 2 main courses, water and 2 cocktails. Dollar rate then was 1.25, (much better now). Best value was Uber, very reasonable to get around.

  There’s lots to do in Miami. I highly recommend it. There are plenty of different neighbourhoods, you don’t have to stay in South Beach. I usually stay in the Brickell Ave area.
  
  (In fact, I’d be most wary of South Beach.- need to do your research; it’s changed a lot over the years. I’ve stayed in some ostensibly high end hotels there where each room was rammed with students (400+USD/night is affordable with 6 plus sharing….).

    Why would you be so wary of south beach ? Miami is no different to any major city – it has its fair share of crime and violence but south beach is where most people want to visit. We didn’t witnesss any crime while we were there and never felt threatened or intimidated. The open top bus tours are great and the Bayside marketplace is a lovely location with shops and some good restaurants. The Thriller speedboat tour is fantastic excursion (departs from Bayside marketplace – book through trip advisor) Beaches are incredible and it’s a beautiful location. Our hotel was pretty reasonable (all things considered) but you pay a premium to be in the heart of the action. It suits many but not all.

  I think Miami is okay if you are a youngster who wants to party. Otherwise I can’t really see the attraction. Beach nice but packed like the Costas. I wouldn’t rush back. Very little in the way of culture imho. Enjoyed the PAMM. That was it.

If I book today for an outbound flight in less than 7 days can I cancel and get all my miles and taxes/fees back bar the £30 cancellation fee? The t&C’s seem vague and googling suggests they have changed a lot over past few years.

  We have recently cancelled 3 reward seats on a return to JFK and had the points and fees (-£90) refunded no problem.
