Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get £5 off at ALDI with American Express

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

If you missed our article last week, American Express is now accepted at ALDI.

A ‘£5 cashback when you spend £10’ offer appeared on many Amex cards yesterday – I have it on my Platinum.  This is valid for one transaction before 30th April.

You need to save the offer to your card in order to register.  If you have it, it will be under the ‘Offers’ tab on your statement page on the website or app.

OT I’ve seen this mentioned a few times re getting the 18,000 Amex rewards for referral but can’t find the info, so if I have a Amex Starwood Card can I refer my wife for the Plat Card if so will I get the 18,000?

    • RL says:

no, you will get 9000 spg points

    • Andrew M says:

No. The points received is based on the card you are referring from. Not the card you are referring to. You will get the usual number of SPG points for a referral.

The avios.com 24hr thing must be new – I’m sure I’ve done a free <24hr cancellation on an avios.com booking before.
Presumably the reader cancelled it by phone (is there an online option on avios.com) – the ba.com free canx only works by phone, not online.

  • Mike says:

    No Aldi offers here either.
I hope Lidl will also welcome Amex soon.
I wonder if independent retailers whose machines accept Amex but choose not to will have a change of mind following the fee changes

  • Oli says:

You also don’t seem to get this protection when booking through a travel agent, or in particular Altour. They told me there was no way to change a non-flex booking for free just 5 minutes after having made it, and that’s not including the fees they add on top.

  • Mikeact says:

I got ‘caught’ by the Avios.com differences a few years back. Now I always book, where possible, (both sites, BA / Avios.com can show different availability ), on the BA site, and more to the point, two seperate one way bookings, where the inbound charges can be far less .
We arrived home last night from the Canaries, out on Avios.com, back on BA.

    • Polly says:

Yes we always book one ways to and from Dublin too. Price of a couple of G and T’s for us!

ALDI. My sister swears by the baileys lookalike. It’s really nice, l agree. Great idea get a bag to push it over the £10 !

  • John D says:

Re Aldi I presented my amex at checkout having read about at Hfp and the cashier said they didn’t take it. I pointed to the poster displaying the Amex logo next to the Visa/ mcard and said give it try and of course it worked. She said she had no idea and proceeded to shout across to the other cashiers about what she had found. Looks as if ALDI staff training hasn’t succeeded in communicating acceptance of amex very well.best to just stick the Amex In the machine!

  • Kilburnflyer says:

Re: Amex Offers, does anyone else have issues with their offers showing up in the Amex app? I consistently only find 1 or 2 of actual available offers listed under my Gold card in the app but when I log in online there are 4/5 others actually available too. Rather annoying

    • Crafty says:

Yes, the new look app has effectively killed offers for me. Really poor.

  • Ada says:

I just canceled a BA flight booked last night with Avios and companion vouchers. I had no issue with the customer service representatives doing this and was not charged a fee either. So maybe the 24 rule does not apply to these flights (on paper) but customer service seems to be treating them the same.

    • Rob says:

You booked on ba.com, that’s why. We are talking about booking via avios.com.
