  The Australia fares are a bargain here, but the Air China fares to SE Asia aren’t that great if you’re starting in London.

  OTAs have LON-HKG & BKK for around £1375.

  I also see that the GulfAir fare LHR to BKK is back – £1009 sample dates 19/3-26/3 via kayak.co.uk

  For the Germany – Australasia deal has anyone managed to book it? The AirChina Website is dreadful – I can’t seem to actually pull up any of the fares when entering my dates etc

    I managed to book FRA MEL okay for early July, but yeah the website is terrible. I did try to do it when it was available last year but their payment system refused to work, CC company hadn’t even seen the request for money so it wasn’t their fault. Layovers are pretty bad in PEK but as my in-laws live there me and wife can pop out and see them. Also avoid the 747 if you want a flat bed.

  I’ve flew with AirChina before, to Tokyo via Beijing. This was 10 months ago. I have to say, please be wary of the connection because they need you to go through the security, and it was really awful. The queue took 2 hours (no business priority queue) and by the time I’ve cleared it, it’s time to board. This happened on both ways, and I spoke to their guy. He’s exasperated because it’s not AirChina’s fault, this lies with the military (they’re in charge of security remember?)
  Forget about the lounge. The food on board is so-so. However the seats are really nice. So it’s a bit of give and take.

  I just booked 🙂
  Positioning flight from LGW to MUC and Air China from MUC to PEK for late March – latter was €1543.52.

  I saw a VA crediting option but went with United. I should be on Air China’s A330-200 out and 777-300ER in.

  I was going to move AmEx MR to Virgin Atlantic to redeem but this seems much better!

  Now… to find a hotel in Beijing and keep praying I left enough time for transit on different tickets!

  Beijing tips welcome!

    We liked the Jinshanling part of the Great Wall of China. Very quiet compared to the other parts. Walking around the hutong rather pleasant. Good restaurant in Lost Heaven. Avoid the Summer Palace. We paid cash for the New World hotel, a short walk from Tiananmen Sq. Excellent lounge and food offering in the evening. Apart from that, we didn’t really like Beijing.

    Waldorf-Astoria is good (see my review on here) with a great location for the Forbidden City and shopping – although whether you want to be 60 seconds from Gap etc is another matter. There was a Novotel next to the W-A which will be cheaper but still in a good spot. The W-A is impressive though and Beijing is not as pricey as say HK.

      If I need 2 bedrooms I’ll probably go with the Marriott suites… shame it doesn’t have a UK credit card (I can signup to) or it will be a toss-up between W-A; W and St Regis.

      Let me know if an Air China Biz review or hotel review would be worthwhile.

        The Starwood Amex gives double points for spending at Marriott properties.

        Might well be interested in an Air China review as long as the Virgin 63k / 75k deal is still there.
