  The last time I had one of these offers (£50 off £200) I looked up the cheapest fares to various destinations on BA.com and then searched for the same flights on amex travel with a hotel.

  Ended up with 3 nights in Istanbul in a reasonable hotel plus flights on Turkish airlines for £150ish. Flights were on a 777 outbound and an A330 on the way back. Free food and drink and decent IFE

  When booking a hotel on points is any payment required, do points cover taxes and fees? The question relates specifically to Hilton. If they ever get round to posting my bonus points from an Amex transfer I’d like to book 6 nights, the 5th night free makes it quite a good deal.

      Even then it depends. In Paris in Nov IC Le Grand asked for the tourism tax, Hilton Opera didn’t (both points bookings).

    Hilton in Barbados didn’t charge the tourist levy staying on points. Hotel Indigo in Rome did. I know others have said the Hilton in the Maldives have waived it for points offer.

    Don’t know about that one but Millenium Hilton has been selling very cheap for cash of late. It’s accross the river so as chilled out as Bangkok is likely to get. Alternatively stay at one of the hotels next to Lumpini Park and spend yors days there like local Thais do.

      Totally agree – we did this HIlton at a fabulous price a few years ago…meaning we could get gorgeous suites for incredibly reasonable prices.

      Having said that, it’s back to the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit in April: with its location, great cocktails and nice pool for the young’un, it wins hands down for us to catch up with pals around the centre.

        Not to mention some decent counters at the Terminal 21 food centre for a £1-2 meal. Only downside is skytrin and underground are atrocious at rush hour.

    if you aren’t married to the river the So Sofitel; its not surrounded by much besides a park.Has an excellent roof top bar and nice enough pool. Rooms are different. Club lounge is excellent. There is an MRT station over the road or you can walk down to Silom in about 20 minutes.

    Anantara jis the old Marriott. Great pool and breakfast. Rooms were dated last time I stayed. Location is poor IMO

      I use to stop at the Anantara 15 years ago when it was the 4 star Marriott. It was a nice pool area. Conrad is now the only place I stay at now as I llike the staff and the pool area. Shed loads of bars and restaurants close by too.

    Personally wouldn’t stay there. Location not great and have learned our lesson with BKK hotels, i.e. Lebua – great reviews but not really what we were looking for and expensive for what you get. Better value to be found elsewhere.

    My wife and I visit LOS twice a year and only frequent BKK hotels for transit purposes and have refined our location to Lower Sukhumvit. Great international hotels, central location and escape route via the tolls to the airport.

      Looking for a hotel with a good pool area to relax on our way back from Melbourne .
      Only 4 nights with the kids so want to take it easy

    We stayed there last year, it is a good chill out place with nice pools and excellent breakfast on the riverfront. However just depends on how many times you want to visit bkk central as it does take a while getting in and out. There is a free boat shuttle takes about 20 mins I think from memory, which is fine for days out but it is a bit of a pain at night for dining elsewhere. The hotel itself is great though and out of the bustle of bkk.

  I have just booked this fare but they would not take a UK American Express card as payment, I had to use VISA. The AMEX logo is clearly on the booking page.

  OT. I’ve built a simple “model” for some decisioning as to whether cash tickets / redemption tickets should be bought and whether avios and money / part pay with avios are then good deals. Can someone technical please advise what the best way to share this might be?

          That was a joke by me about Martin. Anika has been quoted in over 50 papers / newspaper websites over the last 48 hours plus, of the nationals, Sun, Mirror (web and print), Guardian (tonight again), Mail, BBC, Sky News and probably others I forgot. She did 5 Live’s drivetime show last night (live!) and ITV News wanted her on News at 10 tonight but the timing didn’t work.

    In Porto last year we got a lovely room upgrade and complimentary breakfast (which was a surprise), whereas in Budapest last month we got a decent room upgrade but nothing else (other than the usual stated benefits). AMB does drive a ‘genuine’ room upgrade, whereas Spire does very little/nothing (in my experience).

        No – since late 2016 you are not supposed to benefit from the “Club Intercontinental Experience” as part of any upgrade even if AMB and you get a better room. In this respect it is different from a Hilton upgrade where if you are upgraded to the executive floor you get into the lounge too.

        I was upgraded in Johannesburg to a corner room, welcome points and late check out of 4pm. So can’t complain then.
