British Airways announces new Gatwick routes to fill Monarch’s slots – bookable now on Avios

British Airways made the first of what will presumably be a number of new Gatwick route announcements yesterday.  This is the first such announcement since it purchased Monarch’s take-off and landing slots at the airport in November.

In total, BA will operating 150 additional flights per week from Gatwick this summer compared with 2017.

It is worth noting up front that BA is using Titan Airways to operate some Gatwick services this Summer.  These flights are clearly marked at ba.com.  It simply does not have enough available aircraft to use the Monarch slots, and this is not helped by the late delivery of the new Airbus NEO aircraft and the need to send the older Heathrow short-haul planes off to be ‘densified’.  The plan to take six short-haul Qatar Airways appears to have been dropped.

Titan Airways has covered for British Airways before and is generally seen as OK.  You may even get free food and drink in Euro Traveller although that is not confirmed.

New routes announced

The announcement yesterday primarily covered routes which were Monarch’s heartland.  The following changes will kick in from the start of the summer timetable on 25th March:

Malaga – increases to 35 from 27 Gatwick flights per week

Alicante – increases to 22 from 14 Gatwick flights per week

Faro – increases to 21 from 17 Gatwick flights per week

Tenerife – increases to 13 from 6 Gatwick flights per week

Madeira – increases to 9 from 6 Gatwick flights per week

Lanzarote – increases to 5 from 3 Gatwick flights per week

The following brand new Gatwick routes will also be launched, although none are new to the BA network:

Gibraltar

Palma

Mahon

BA also claims to have added 400 extra flights on existing routes between 9th February and 24th March, although no breakdown has been provided.

I have not been given the exact times and dates for these new flights.  However, they do appear to be bookable now on ba.com for cash or Avios.  If you want a peak August flight down to the Med then this is your chance, as the original Avios allocation will have gone months ago.

Expect further announcements in the coming weeks.

To maximise your miles when paying, your best bet is the British Airways American Express Premium Plus card which earns double Avios (3 per £1) when you book at ba.com or via BA Holidays.  You do not get double Avios if you book with the free British Airways American Express card.  Another option is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers double points – 2 per £1 – when you book flight tickets directly with an airline.

I can’t find any additional flights to Alicante until June. Also the summer schedule to Alicante doesn’t seem to start until May this year when flights increase to 14 per week.

  • Anthony Burns says:

Nothing wrong at all with Titan Airways as been on flights operated by them a couple of times.
Been building the aircraft they have available over the last few years and in recent times have provided aircraft with crews for various airlines including Easyjet and Jet2.
Believe they also have one of the 318’s BA used to operate out of City Airport.

    • Lewis says:

As in the all business class new York one?

      • Rob says:

Yes, Titan has that now. I posted a link once to the brochure on their website advertising it.

  • S***o says:

What would a TITAN CE seat consist of? Same a BA?

    • Stu N says:

Probably just an empty middle seat. Have flown on Titan 757 and A32x a few times in recent years, they are perfectly acceptable with modern interiors and very pleasant crew.

  • @mkcol says:

Annoyingly can’t now login to ba.com – they’ve tweeted they’re having some issues. So I popped over to Avios.com & noticed that a redemption LHR-LCA-LHR was requiring different number of Avios on each sector despite both dates being off peak – has fluid pricing sneaked in already?

    • Rob says:

Shouldn’t be. Was one leg Titan?

      • @mkcol says:

Ah – it was off peak/peak pricing but as I was playing on Avios site it didn’t explain the difference.
        My (silly) mistake.

  • Zoe says:

Will the Titan flights count as part of the 4 flights needed for BA Silver? I assume that Air Nostrum ones with IB flight numbers don’t count, I did ask a BA agent but she didn’t really understand what I was asking for.

    • John says:

If the flight codes are BA and/or IB they count, but remember redemption flights don’t count. If you are worried then just give yourself enough leeway to take another BA roundtrip before membership year end.

      • Nick says:

Yes they count. These flights will show as operated with a BA code sink issue.

For the record, Air Nostrum counts when booked under IB code but not when under 9W (which is rare but technically possible).

Similarly with IB Express, where bookings under IB code (the vast majority) count but I2 don’t.

  • Linda says:

Slightly O/T…just tried to book last minute flights to Cape Town, checked Avios availability & found flights; then tried to book the exact same flights using Amex Companion Voucher & response was no availability? Anyone else experienced similar? Is BA allowed to do restrict seat availability when using voucher? Would welcome some help, thanks

  • Rupert S says:

Happy days – booked Faro in August on RFS & emptied out my IHG points on the CP Vilamoura (before it goes from 35k to 45k per night).

    Thanks Rob

  • Cate says:

Qatar may still be in this deal as Titan only have about what – six aircraft ? Perhaps Qatar are in the ‘what if’ plan.
