Happy Christmas to you and your family. I hope you enjoy a well deserved break, wherever in the world you are.

Do please post below if your travels have taken you anywhere exciting this Christmas.  I am in London with the in-laws.  Anika is in Hamburg with her family.

Head for Points is taking a two day break. We will be back on Wednesday 27th with a review of my travel highlights and lowlights of 2017.

If you want something to read in the meantime, take a look under the ‘Favourite Articles‘ tab where you will find my pick of the most relevant pieces published in 2017, including our (in need of updating) ‘Avios Redemption University‘ series and all of our credit card reviews.

If you collect Avios via Tesco Clubcard, you may also want to take a look at the recent articles over at our sister site Shopper Points.

Thank you for your support over the past year.

Merry Christmas all, having a quiet one at home as just back from New York yesterday and still a bit fatigued. Flew on a bargain BA “Holiday plus CW” pre-Christmas deal and scored an Avios upgrade to F both ways by checking daily after booking. Admittedly 80,000 Avios for that is a lot but when they were relatively easily earned via the tips and tricks on here, plus we got the know-how to actually find the upgrades to start with we are more than happy enough. Thanks all and Happy New Year!

    Merry Christmas one and all!

Like others this is the only website I read every day. Have a couple of trips planned for 2018 but mainly using the points for hotels as it’s just easier with the little ones. Highlight will probably be going to Crete to sample the Domes of Elounda on a Marriott travel package. Hope it lives up to the hype!

Merry Christmas to Rob, Anika and all the fantastic people who have helped with advice over the last year. After a year that included a trip to the US (visiting friends) with my boyfriend in BA First on a 241, a trip to China and Mongolia flying there in Virgin Atlantic Upper, and back in Cathay Pacific First, and a cheap flight to the Seychelles for 2 weeks (it is absolutely “peak” beach – it’s all downhill after that) I’m spending Christmas on Koh Rong Samloem in Cambodia (nice, uncrowded and cheap, but windier than expected, thanks to the Typhoon in the Philippines) and NYE in Hong Kong (still hoping that the Conrad will upgrade us Genghis…). Flights there and back in cattle class, sadly (I’m a state school teacher, so I can only afford to fly business and first with airmiles!), but I’m making the whole experience slightly more palatable by getting my boyfriend and myself lounge access in most of the airports with my AMEX Platinum (which has paid for itself with 3 visits to the pop-up bar, 2 with friends and family, free travel insurance, airport lounge visits, the £200 off a £600 spend and MRs).

He’s still peeved about all the lego though…

    Many thanks for everything! Cat

Well done, Cat! Hope more of these will come in 2018!

My bf and I used our points to offset exorbitant hotel prices in SF last October and next year going to use 2-4-1 voucher to go to Singapore and Indonesia. All inspired by HFP too. Not that impressive as yours but still something 🙂

I’m doing my best – so far I have an absurdly cheap trip to Antalya in Turkey planned (it should help me hit my odd Accelerate targets – 3 different countries of all things!) where I plan to divide my time between walking in the hills, eating lovely food and lounging in hammams, a quick trip to Berlin (visiting friends) and Dresden (hiking in Saxon Switzerland – I was going to stay in the Hilton there, which may or may not trigger my £50 off, as I booked it under the prepaid winter sale rate, but I may throw in an IHG mattress run, leaving me with only one other country…), and my 40th to be spent somewhere in the Algarve. The long suffering boyfriend and I are also planning to hike a chunk of the SW coast path at Easter, other than that, we’ll see where the wind blows me.

What do you think the odds are of triggering 2000 points on my redemption at the Conrad HK by paying for a token drink charged to my room, when we check out on 1st January???

I’ll bet SF was amazing – I love that city! Where did you stay? Where are you heading to in Indonesia Alex? It’s a fantastic place to visit on so many levels. I’m idly contemplating a 3rd trip there at some point…

        • Alex Sm says:

I am not sure about Conrad tbh… I am focussing on IHG properties (no matress runs for us, out of the question – we are trying to build interesting mini-trips around even the most boring outer London hotels like HIX Chingford).

In Indonesia – it’s actually interesting as we are using a free nights voucher for Hyatt in Jakarta (generously donated by a colleague) and then moving to Bali, planning currently in progress.
