Yesterday I wrote about the current IHG Rewards Club ‘Your World Sale’.  There is also a special offer on for joining the InterContinental Ambassador loyalty scheme.

There is a link at the bottom of this IHG ‘Your World Sale’ page to this offer.  When I click the link it does not divert properly, but it is meant to divert to the Ambassador home page here.  Annoyingly the offer is not mentioned there.

A lot of people instantly reject the idea of joining Ambassador because of the $200 membership fee.  Given that IHG will sweeten the deal with 10,000 IHG Rewards Club points (not status qualifying, I think) worth $60-$70, I thought it was worth explaining why I DO think it makes sense for many people.

InterContinental Ambassador

I have, after all, been a member myself for many years now and only last month paid for my 2018 renewal.  My wife is also currently a member as it was worth signing her up purely to get benefits on one stay in Hong Kong earlier this year.

Putting InterContinental Ambassador in context

InterContinental, the luxury hotel brand inside IHG Rewards Club (which also covers Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and others) is a little odd when it comes to loyalty schemes:

As part of the Holiday Inn / Crowne Plaza group, it participates in IHG Rewards Club

InterContinental does not officially recognise your IHG Rewards Club status.  In reality, they often do, but it is not guaranteed.

InterContinental also has its own loyalty scheme – Ambassadorwhich costs $200 to join

And yet, despite the $200 fee ($150 to renew), I consider Ambassador a good deal.  This article summarises why it works for me.

The key thing about Ambassador is that, once you are a member, the benefits are GUARANTEED on paid stays. They are NOT guaranteed on reward stays, but most properties do let you have them. These benefits are:

A certificate for a free weekend night when you join and each year when you renew. In one swoop, you can save your entire membership fee with this benefit. To use the voucher, you need to book a 2-night weekend stay and pay the Best Flexible Rate for the other night. The letter of the rules says that only standard rooms can be booked. However, most hotels let you book club rooms or suites – this is an important benefit, especially if you have children and want larger rooms.

(As Best Flexible Rate is more expensive than a non-refundable Advance Purchase rate, your free night is not totally free if you would otherwise have booked a pre-paid rate as you have paid a few Euros or $ more.  It is totally free if you would otherwise have booked at Best Flexible Rate though.)

GUARANTEED one-level room upgrade – this is usually processed before you arrive and is visible online

4pm check-out – this is a GUARANTEED benefit and comes in very handy on a weekend break with an evening flight back home

A free pay-TV movie per stay, every stay

Free fruit and mineral water in your room

A welcome gift – varies from chocolates or wine to weird local souvenirs!

Double occupancy for single occupancy rate – useful in Germany, one of the few countries where they still charge a ‘second person’ supplement

Obviously InterContinental Ambassador is not for everyone. You can earn back the cost of membership in just one weekend stay, though. It may even be worth it even if you had just one long stay booked and wanted to guarantee your upgrade. Ambassador members also receive Gold status in IHG Rewards Club, although that doesn’t get you far.

The Ambassador ‘free weekend night’ voucher can be better than using points to book a free room.  I used my 2017 free night at InterContinental Hong Kong over Easter.  The only reason to stay at this hotel is the astounding views over the harbour from the harbourside rooms.  IHG Rewards Club redemption nights, however, only book into the street side – and if you get upgraded, you only ever get a bigger room on the street side.  Using a ‘free weekend night’ voucher let me stay on the water side whilst also making a big saving.

Renewal is even cheaper, at just $150, and you receive another ‘free weekend night’ certificate and a bonus of 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points.  More interestingly, on renewal you are offered a second option:

Renew for $200 instead of the standard $150

Receive 15,000 points instead of 5,000 points

Receive a 10% points rebate on all of your redemption bookings – across all brands – for the following year.  I do this, and find that this really adds up which makes the $200 renewal option the best choice for me.

You can learn more about InterContinental Ambassador here if it sounds interesting.  However, I recommend clicking through from the link on the sale website here if it is working properly.

There is an option to use 32,000 IHG Rewards Club points instead of paying $200 in cash.  With the fall in the value of the £, this payment route is looking more attractive than it was.  I am assuming – although it isn’t written anywhere – that you also get the 10,000 bonus points for joining Ambassador if you pay with points.

The offer for 10,000 bonus IHG Rewards Club points runs until 29th November.

I was put in an Accor hotel (Adagio) for several weeks and got nothing for it. So it’s really good that IHG recognizes work stays, whether booked on a special corporate rate or paid for by your employer. Accor completely lost me for that.

Hi Rob/guys, I’m a new AMB this year. When you redeem your AMB weekend I understand the second night is the free one, my question is do you pay tax on the second night even though it’s free or just the first night? I’ve yet to use my voucher but even with one weekend in Prague saving 200e means that AMB seems a no-brainer, the $150 renewal even more so.
A comment in general on IHG rewards, even though I’m spire elite the majority of my stays are going to Hilton and Marriott as they guarantee their benefits, especially breakfast.

  • Alan says:

What is the earnings rate as ICA? Would it be worth paying the $200 if I am a regular visitor to IHG hotels but only hold Plat status? (i.e. would I receive higher bonus points as ICA which would go towards paying back the $200 over time?)

    • Rob says:

No bonus points. They used to give a special Ambassador bonus but it was withdrawn (IIRC ….).

  • Mark says:

    Rob – A few questions:
    1) Does it still take ages for the Ambassador pack to arrive with the card & 241 certificate?
    2) Do hotels insist on seeing the original 241 certificate to honour the free night?
    and
    3) If these are ‘yes’, isn’t it risky to sign up a few weeks before a stay? Safer to arm-twist and sign up at the hotel?

    • Rob says:

Back to 4-6 weeks but not exactly speedy (I renewed 30 Oct and not got it yet), Yes, No (signing up at the hotel does NOT get you a 241 voucher for that stay because the voucher is still mailed from the US as usual and you can’t use it until you have it)

  • Sid says:

OT: I have a Conrad stay coming up in Jan, a combination of paid nights and the free HH visa certificate reward night tagged at the end on a Friday. Will the points for my paid nights track correctly even though our check-out will be from the reward night. Also, even though I am Hilton Gold, I have booked the Bed & Breakfast rate for the paid stay, as our 4 year old will be staying with us to guarantee a good breakfast, as this particular Conrad has a pretty good buffet breakfast spread. Will we only get the continental breakfast for the last/reward day. Anyone had experience of this? Thanks

    • Olly says:

We have stayed at a few Conrads as both Gold and Diamond and always had the offer of breakfast in either the main restaurant or the Exec Lounge on a standard booking. If it were me I would drop them an email and ask them. I would be very surprised if they didn’t let you have a buffet breakfast for your last day, especially as a Gold Honors member. I would be very surprised if you didn’t get the offer of both even if you didn’t pay for B&B at all.Have you looked at the reviews it TripAdvisor to gauge the hotel’s treatment of Golds? I seem to remember one Conrad, possibly NYC, might not be so generous but check out TA.

      • Sid says:

Thanks Olly, the only I decided to pay for breakfast is because our 4 year old will be staying with us, HH Gold will only get myself and one additional guest complimentary breakfast, didn’t want one of us to be left hungry 🙂

I also have a Hilton booking (Exec Room with access to lounge for 7 nights) only a few minutes away from the Conrad, as part of the same holiday. Fingers crossed they let all 3 of us have our breakfast in the exec lounge.

    • John says:

If you pay for full breakfast why on earth do you think you won’t get it?

The main problem is that you don’t earn points at hiltons when you have a reward night adjacent to any number of paid nights, so you need to reconsider.

      • Sid says:

Does that I won’t get any HH points for the paid nights just because the last night is a reward night?

  • Craig Strickland says:

Just phoned to sign up because I couldn’t get the website to work either. The agent informed me the 10000 points would post in 6-8 weeks even though I used points to sign up. Fingers crossed.

    • Alan says:

Sounds good – reading the T&Cs there’s no exclusion mentioned:

      “Offers
      Join InterContinental Ambassador
A one-time bonus of 10,000 points will be awarded to you approximately 6-8 weeks after you successfully join the InterContinental Ambassador programme. Offer is valid from 11 November until 29 November”

So would be in a strong case to challenge if not honoured.

I got them to honour at 10k bonus offer they emailed me by mistake (link to register on the website didn’t work and they said I hadn’t been targeted) so I’d hope for no problems with this by comparison!

  • Love2Travel says:

My Hilton Diamond is expiring in March 2018 but I have a holiday starting 2nd April. I want to do the Diamond Challenge from IHG Platinum but since it will expire on 31/03, how do I work around it to get Diamond for my stay?

Secondly, is it confirmed that Platinum Amex to other Amex like BA is giving 18k MR?

    • TripRep says:

Have you phoned Hilton Honors to ask if they will grant you some grace on this? They can be flexible esp. if you have a few stays lined up with the intention of putting a few more to Hilton rather than a competitor. I retained Gold via this method last March.

  • Christine says:

Yup. Joined Ambassador program at check in at IC Boston 2015, which was booked through hotel booking site (can’t remember which). Full benefits honored straight away – double upgrade actually. Also good experience at IC San Francisco, booked through Priceline. Emailed ahead with membership number. Since then I have booked direct.

Have renewed twice since using points and can confirm I received bonus points (5000 was the latest one arrived this week)
